Speaker 1: All right, guys. We're going to do a Can Opener which is a move from. Georges St. Pierre really likes to do it.
I'm going to show you the traditional variation and then I'm going to show you a variation I learned from Tim Katoffo, who is a catch wrestler. It's not a traditional Jujitsu move but I really like it. You have to be careful of the sweep but if you catch an opponent by surprise, it's really nice because you don't have to worry about the arm hold. Okay?
So, I'm in the guard, and I want to break his guard. I want to pass him, so I'm going to shoot up and just pull his head. Right. Now, I'm going to be throwing elbows here. Now, the one thing he's got to be careful of, he's going to push my head up, and my arm extends, and then there's an Arm Bar.
Speaker 2: Tap.
Speaker 1: So we don't want that. Right?
So I never want to extend my arms here. Right, there's that Arm Bar. Tap.
We don't want that so I'm going to shoot forward here. Now, here, I'm going to show a nice little variation. Boom. You can just tap him here but sometimes it's hard to tap him. Usually you see Georges St. Pierre throwing elbows, which is good, right?
But what you want to do is drive forward and then sit up here and push his head down. Now, even if you don't tap him here, right, you've just broken his guard. Okay?
All right. One more time. I'm here. Boom. Boom. He has to open his guard, boom, you can control it. Really great move.
Now, what you have to be careful of is this. When you drive forward he doesn't get underneath your legs and sweep you. Right? You're like oh. You don't want that. Okay?
So what you've got to do is keep your legs behind you. Reach through my legs. Reach through my legs, Jack.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: He can't, and I feel him reaching for my leg, here, I maneuver his head. I push down, boom, and that's the Can Opener.
Okay? Very effective move.

Thats what I use the can opener for. To open the guard if you practice it a lot you'll become fluid in passing the guard.

Hated Out Yo How does it open the guard? I didn't see the legs used for countering the choke at all just the arms.

DeagleBeagle When you pull someones head to their chest their legs open up, usually. Ask someone to do it to you.

Not something you wanna do to your training partners. Street fight, yes. Too many variables in the neck and lower back. Damage can come very easy (before tapping). More emphasis on safety with this move should have been stated.

ooglaboogla555 concrete is not made of mat material. You try Putting a triangle (from the bottom) on someone, be ready to have your body and head lifted and smashed on cement. If it goes there (the ground), fine. But stand up should always be first choice. Just my 2 cents. Now if there's grass around ... Different story :-))))

thank you for your can opener, i am a beginner and this is probably the most simple but effective technique, but i found that it's more difficult to choke someone that's stockier and bigger than you, but you can definitely open up their guard. Thanks

Just be super careful with this. I got hurt at my gym by a blue belt doing this to me yesterday, it is not legal at my gym since it can be considered a spinal crank. Just take care of your partners yall.

I really dislike these kinds of techniques. I rather stick to the classic stuff such as armbar, triangle and a good guillotine.

Soooo..... don’t use it. I don’t understand your logic though. It works or creates an opportunity to pass guard. Once guard is passed then use “classic” techniques.
