How often should the system be flushed ? I top off my res. at the beginning of the season I haven't ever had a problem .I generally go by the old saying if it's not broken don't fix it .

I believe the location of the coolant reservoir in a different location for the VTX 1800R and the VTX 1800S? It is behind engine low and near the rear tire.

The R and the S (and the C) had the coolant res down low behind the engine for the first three production years. Then it was moved up to the cylinders like the F and N.

Why not just siphon the reservoir tank instead of all of the removal process? It seems that would be so much easier.

If you leave the pressure cap on when you remove the drain bolt the fluid should get sucked out of the reservoir eliminating some work. In the rare case that the cap won't flow, take the cap off and put your hand or something over the hole to seal it off and it'll do the trick.

John, Thank you for making these videos. You have helped me an others a great deal. I asked a question on one of your other videos and I have a similar question here. I want to change the coolant on my 2003 VTXC. My reservoir is on the bottom and not on the side like the 2005. Will the coolant amount be the same, more or less? I noticed that I have two caps for my radiator as well. one is under the tank and the other is under the left side cover. will it make a difference where i pour it in for the proper levels? Your videos you show are very clear and precise, thank you again for doing this. You are saving me a ton in labor costs with your instructional videos.

Fill the pressure cap first, then fill the reservoir to the line. The amount should be the same, they just put the reservoir in a different spot.

On my VTX (with reservoir is down the chassis) once the thermostat opens it is a mess trying to keep the coolant in the system. This bike is just to difficult to work on the cooling system! That Radiator cap should have been placed somewhere other than under the tank !

I told him at the time you'll be sorry... He spent hours of cleaning that led to not wanting to ride cause all the work... I told him sooner or later you gotta leave the High School pressure behind and do what your brain tells you is the better bike. Im now looking at a VTX cause the wife is a x now and no need for the wind these days... Pluss I can buy two nice bikes for the price of a used Harley.

Hi i have a 2005 vtz1800R and I bought it and the oil pump/water pump was not in the bike but I do not the actual pump but no nuts or bolts. I have 2004 vtx 1800s. A friend removed the tank too fast for me to see what exactly he did. Gas gushed. Its been to the shop a few times. Is there room to add a shutoff valve on either direction of flow so fuel does Not gush??? 😬😷😊😎

hi. I recently did your test and found out that it was my solenoid. I replaced now the test tell me it's the starter. I tested the starter first and engage fine. then I figured out it was the solenoid. could the starter have went after?

Turned out it was the brake pivot shaft screw head snapped off so it was a simple inspection that led me to my answer. Thank you so much for the reply and I can't wait for you or video to clean the hypercharger on a 2002 VTX 1800 C

Question Sir, just bought a 2003 vtx1800c with under 14k miles and after riding for 40min the motor was missing and the red F1 light came on, it only did it for 20 seconds or so but when I pulled over turned it off and looked for something it started up and run good. Is that a bad plug or fuel pressure and what is the red F1 light mean ??

Unfortunately, this could be a number of things. Loose wire, misfire, fuel injection issue...F1 is actually FI for fuel injection, but it will go off when there is an electrical issue. When you turn on the bike, does the FI light blink? That would be stored ECU codes. This might help: tech.bareasschoppers.com/resources/ecu-error-codes-vtx-1800/

You cant get to the coolant cap, with the tank on

I get to the coolant cap with the tank on just by removing the rear tank mount bolt and nut and propping up the rear of the tank with a 12” length of 3/4” pvc-notched at top to accept the tank and a hole drilled through the bottom to reinstall the tank bolt through the pvc to secure it in place. I remove the dash bezel from the tank prior to all this and hang it to the side. Helps to have minimal fuel in tank. And a 3’ clear 1/2” hose attached to a funnel can top off the coolant.

It's not recommended. You won't be able to get the proper amount of fluid in the bike. The VTX1300 takes 2.9 qts or about 2.75 liters of coolant.

Hi mate, I have a problem afte rchanged fluid: the engine is hot, checked with thermo and the temperature is 104C, the fan worked but when I rode on the street, the engine is stopped autotimacally, without any reason.....I waited for 3minutes, re-start and the bike worked again, I came to the garage but no one could find the reason. They recommended me need to clean the radiator tank and change the sensor (at the bottom of radiator tank) to reduce temperature down, approx to 80C for starting the fan.....at the moment, I connect the fan directly to the power source, ie when I turn on engine, the fan will be working, no need to wait for reflect from the sensor My questions are what reason do you think is should be and what is the best solution for this? Thanks for your advise very much.

Without looking at the bike, it's hard to tell. It could be an overheating issue or an entirely new problem. Make sure your coolant levels are correct, then check your electrical system.

Do you really need it? 104C is not a crazy temperature, if you were constantly hitting 120C or so, then yes. The bike should function fine without adding the oil cooler. If it's not, something is wrong. If you are riding in extremely hot climates, like the desert, then the added cooling might be beneficial.
