Thank you so much for posting this tutorial, Coach Julia! I’m looking forward to getting back on the ice next week to try to implement these techniques. Your advice about bringing the free leg directly up and over into that “h” shape (rather than out to the side) will hopefully be just the advice that I need to help me with this!

It went like this: Placed In Basic2 Could do everything in basic2---> basic3 Could do everything in basic3---> basic4 Could do everything in basic4---> basic5 And now I'm in basic 5 after one lesson. I think I may try private lessons instead of the group lesson. We only got 25 minutes of instruction time.

@@ms_nataly I ended up getting a coach, and she said the way you enter the spin is you have to really bend your knee (the one you’re going to spin on) and put all your pressure and weight on the leg and then once you start to go get deeper in the spiral, you will just naturally start to spin.
@ms_nataly
@ms_nataly Жыл бұрын
@@MM-mx2yx thanks for sharing! The thing is I have a coach, and I can do one foot spin on a spot easily with many rotations, but I'm struggling with the entrance. However, you're totally right, I also came to a conclusion (btw, with the help of another video on this channel), that spiral will be more curve if you bend your knee more. I'm gonna to try this on today's training 😁🍾. Meanwhile, I recommend to check other spin-related Julia videos (with the entrance and one foot spin), this helped me to understand this moment with the knee...

Thanks for making this video! Every time I see the opening of each of your videos I wish I could do a scratch spin like that. I’ve been practicing spins for at least four years. Sometimes I manage to cross my free leg, but even so I can’t seem to lift my right thigh anywhere near as high as yours does. I can do a Y spiral and splits, so flexibility is not the issue. Just during a spin I find it hard to lift my free thigh. Any suggestions?

So after you mention staying wound up and doing a long outside edge without unwinding, it looks like you unwind and whip immediately after you step from the wind up. I do this too but I'm scolded for traveling or for not holding my edge long enough, but it doesn't look like most skaters do. I did get what I was looking for though. I am trying to bring my arms and legs in at the same time and you said to do leg first(cross) then arms and legs. I'm also trying to go fast because I feel unstable if I go slow.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 2 жыл бұрын
The traveling has a lot to do with whether you are on a deep enough outside edge as you enter the spin. You want to create a hook shape that tightens up as you enter the spin.
@jrg305
@jrg305 2 жыл бұрын
@@CoachJulia thanks this is helpful. I just got off the ice and just by doing the leg in first I was able to hold for more revolutions than ever. I'm still traveling. Sometimes I overhook and skid on the ice on the entry but still pull off the spin. I have a lot of power but low control

Hey, I‘m a bit confused: does the leg really need to be bent in the „holding position“ at the beginning?
@tomharris195
@tomharris195 9 ай бұрын
How do you get over the mental block of crossing your leg? I have a really great one foot spin from strong back crossovers and an entrance edge, and it's well centered, fast and gets 8-12 revolutions, but for the scratch spin I just can't get over the hurdle of actually crossing my leg over without feeling like I'm tipping myself off my axis or going to get all twisted up and not be able to come out of the spin.
@katherinenghiem7126
@katherinenghiem7126 3 ай бұрын
THIS IS LITERALLY ME!! Were you able to finally get it?
@tomharris195
@tomharris195 3 ай бұрын
@@katherinenghiem7126 Yes! And actually pretty quickly too, tbh. What my coach told me that made everything click was to think about just hinging at the knee. If you think about it like an upright spin you will just throw yourself off, but think about the different positions you hit in your spin and when your leg comes out and around as the spin starts, instead of thinking about bringing it in, think about just bending your knee and that will bring the free foot across. Once you have the 4 position and your foot is across, it's so much more comfortable to push that foot down into the full scratch spin position than to try and think about doing that from the get-go. Also, just to get over the mental hurdle of it, I practiced in a corner one day just doing spins and when I tried to cross my leg I would basically smash my foot into my spin to make sure I was actually getting it in front of me instead of still just out to the side. Good for making me pay attention to where my leg actually is in the spin, and good motivation to get it all the way across, that way it's my boot or calf hitting my skating leg and not my blade, lol! But maybe 1 or 2 days of mild bruises and it clicked so much faster than I thought it would. Once you get a scratch spin they'll feel so much more natural and you'll never want to go back to a regular upright spin!

Film it in slow motion and then look at your posture.
