It's an escape technique used in wrestling
@mattwells10364 жыл бұрын
I used a variation of this to defend a rear naked choke. It was at wrestling practice however. The other kid started wrestling the same time as me and had bjj lessons over the summer, he kept asking if he could show me a move, we were doing live situation, from a similar starting position he needed, aka, referees position. We went live and he immediately threw in a rear naked choke, I was complying at first, but once he put it in I knew he was putting in a choke, i went live to defend. I pulled a bit of space on my neck, with one arm, as hes telling me "you have to tap out" I post up on my other and do a very explosive roll, in a more forward direction than demonstrated here, but I still do roll over my shoulder. The action took his head and torso and made them hit the mat, and then pryed him off of me as I rolled through, with me scrambling and getting top position afterwards. He called for me to stop and then wound up sitting out for the rest of practice, his head hurt, the coaches investigated the story and had a laugh, he did get a doctors note for a concussion and sat out the next week. Some of us also started doing it to get out of the legs from the bottom as well in live practice. Should I feel bad about that? I mean I think it's kinda funny he tried to choke me without me being aware of what he was going to do during live training, with that as the result.
@RamseyDewey4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you did a Peterson roll.
@RamseyDewey4 жыл бұрын
As long as you both agreed to go live, you both agree to accept the consequences. The dude should have fought for backmount control before getting ambitious with the RNC. And he should have tucked his chin and rolled with you when you rolled him- it would have sparred him the concussion.
@mattwells10364 жыл бұрын
@@RamseyDewey I've talked about this roll and I definitely always thought it wasnt the same as the granby we trained in wrestling practices, but most just said it was. I was doing some research and thought it might be a peterson but I was never totally sure. I was always bad at remembering the names of moves back then too
@mattwells10364 жыл бұрын
@@RamseyDewey I don't exactly remember, but I know he didn't fully secure the legs, I think he went for the neck first and was trying to put boots in when I started to defend, so I probably stopped his boot(s) from getting all the way in, he was certainly not super experienced at bjj, and I was a faster learner in wrestling(possibly due in part to me being forced onto varsity due to injuries in my first season.) I know I told him I'd let him get the move in but that were going live right now so after that we have to wrestle it out, if we didn't the coaches would definitely have been on us over us stopping, although if they saw him choking itd probably be a similar reaming out. I think he thought because I didn't know much about it that I couldn't defend it and i would just tap out like most whitebelts did at the gym he was at, but obviously since I had never been in a situation where I needed to tap out, and didn't know until it was happening what he was going to do, it didnt play out that way. I of course apologized for accidentally causing the concussion. I think we both probably learned something from that experience.

Hey coach, I had a question about the reasoning behind a MMA rule. As I understand , intentional headbutting is illegal under unified rules, but why is this the case? Are there any unique dangers it poses to fighters ( that is greater than all the other legal techniques ). I've grown up viewing headbutts as something middle school children do ( usually to the chest or stomach ) and somewhat brutish thing drunk people might attempt ( usually to the nose, chin or forehead to forehead when they mess up) , but it's status as foul makes me wonder if I have been taking headbutt's too lightly

The unified rules of MMA were written by a boxing commission- The New Jersey Athletic Control Board. All the rules that exist in the UFC are because of that.

There are multiple combative uses for the Granby roll. In wrestling, it’s primarily used for positional improvements from the bottom (ie: either moving from the bottom position to the top, or getting back up to your feet) and, escaping a throw instead of being dumped on your head and also rolling safely out of a throw on landing and standing back up instead of getting squashed and hurt. In BJJ it’s used primarily for reguarding.
