So the next exercise we're going to show here is called the Lap Sau drill or a Lap Dah exercise. This is a very fundamental Chi Sau drill. Again, depending on which lineage of Wing Chun you practice or what your Sifu teaches you, there's always variations for this one here. What I'm going to show you is the standard form in the WT system of Wing Chun. So when we start in the Lap Dah one partner's in Bong Sau. The other partner is actually going to use a footboard jutsu, as opposed to a full-on grab.
If you totally grab your opponent's arm, you're also kind of binding yourself to them, and you give them a chance to come in and hit. As long as your hand is open, you always are free for other options and to be able to change things around. So we start like this using the Fook-Sau or Sat Sau from the form. The other hand is going to be here in the middle. This actually comes from the second form Chum Kiu and you're going to ride over the bridge, over your hand and at the last moment, you close your fist like this.
Now, of course in real fighting, my intention is to go in, step in and punch him, but this is just a drill for teaching the students movements one-by-one. So we start like this, I'm going to punch and then he's going to do the same thing to me. Now when I go forward, I'm actually going to take my Wu Sau hand and bring it like this, so I can slip it on the inside, all right? Once this goes in, I turn this one flat, and then I'm going to punch this, right here. It's important not to go forward with your hand wide, because then you have to go off the center line to go forward.
If you go in here with a narrow hand, you can press this one down, put this one on top and punch like this here. What we want to avoid is grappling and doing a back fist which is a very, very common error. Because again, our goal is not to grapple our opponent's arm and give them a back fist on his hand. What we want to do in fighting application later is obviously, go in and step and control. So it doesn't make sense for us to do something like this. Also, the problem with this style of Lap Sau is that it teaches the students to have two hands on one. If he grapples my arm and gives me a back fist, he has two hands on one which leaves a whole bunch of options for me to counter here. So we want one arm there at a time, like this.
If you notice when I punch, I keep my elbow low, this is for training the low elbow force. We call it in Cantonese Chung Tai, like this way here. So we practice it a lot. But here we can start first on one side. Of course, later you can build in some simple switches, so that you can practice it on both sides this way here. Because you want to practice the Bong Sau reaction, as well as the whole Tiu Sau process and punch here on both sides. All right, and that's how we practice the basic Lap Sau drill.

I learned the same drill using Ton Sau against the Bong Sau and the training partner uses a Ton Sau to Lop Sau to make the transition but it's all works the same. Very good explanation of the drill Sifu.

I miss doing wing chun, done it for 3 years, but I moved away where there are no clubs. I love how there's always an answer for everything (and it's basically just punching the other guy) and that guy hinted at it with his controlling two arms with one.

yeah that’s in very slow motion,it is only apply in training drill when real fight is so fast and almost like a back fist, because you have to lap(actually is not grab tight and pull,that s also dangerous,just like press forearm down ) and attack almost same time

👊😎Kung Fu dude actually did a pretty good job. He actually used his feet. Was using simultaneous punch/block & trapping techniques. And stayed up for what seems like a while. 💪Not bad for a guy with no fight conditioning. 😏Luckily they didn't grapple. 🤦Now if only the Kung Fu dudes would move to the side as the Mack truck goes by. Instead of standing in front of it. They only like to move backwards and forwards. It's a really bad habit.🤣🤣🤣 🙏Kudos to that man's Sifu.❤️

Love & respect this style of martial arts, I'm a huge fan. What is its strength and weaknesses?
@delta9719

+rhino me too. i think its weakness are long range martial arts. its strength tho is its simplicity and directness. its very direct and it doesnt do much fancy moves in which u can use in real life.
@ghcheong
@ghcheong 7 жыл бұрын
In Wing Chun, the strengths are that this art does not rely on being big and strong to overcome your opponent, instead , it focuses on proper bone alignment and " structure " to move and manipulate the opponent. The other strength is that it is very efficient in motion . No movement is wasted and every movement is made to set up another move . Also , Wing Chun has this belief of " Loi Lau Hoi Song , Lat Sau Jit Chung " (来留回送, 摔手直冲) , meaning , when an opponent attacks , you receive the opponent, when the person retreats , you persuit the person . Once you lose contact of the hand , rush in to launch your own attack. It is a very persistent martial art , the Wing Chun practitioner will basically latch on like a leech to the opponent once contact is made and keep attacking until the opponent is down and out. The weakness of this martial art though is that it has little to no long range weapons and it does not include slipping and rolling techniques of boxing but rather depend on positioning the body to avoid a punch upright or to receive and redirect the shot away from the body. It also lacks the footwork of some other martial arts such as 52 blocks which always has a leg that serves as an alternative to go to if the initial attack fails and the opponent counter punches . Overall , I think Wing Chun is a great martial art for no nonsense self defense to get in and get out of harms way as fast as possible but as far as prolonged fights, duels and tournaments is concerned, other styles will work better. My teacher always told me " If a fight begins with both of you squaring up and sizing each other up, chest bumping and all , it is no longer self defense and most cases you can avoid it . You can still go to jail for fighting even if you knock the person out ."

@ Gin Hao Cheong: Wing Chun has very effective kicking and footwork. The trouble is most seem to ignore this element and many elements of Wing Chun [such as the true purpose of Fok Sao] are not understood. Movement without meaning or intention is empty. This is an issue with many martial arts, but seems more pronounced in Wing Chun because so much of the movements are subtle and difficult to perceive by eye.

@@tonystarkunlimited7332 ---- Wing Chun not a person? You may be right with Ng Mui but Wing Chun was a person. The way I learned, much of what I know. I was dragged out into an undeveloped area, that was my dojo with trees and water and we did drills, sparred and ran all afternoon like 4-5 hours a day. Most of those times I never even learned the name of things. I used to do this drill. I JUST heard the name on, of all things a comedy video, Master Ken on facebook. We used to sometimes do this and go faster and faster until one of us broke into free form and sparred. I am a little confused, Is this the same as Shaolin sticky palm? Is that what this is? We used to play "games" or do drills where one would try and touch the other, and you had to always redirect the hand. I also assume this is what is done on a drill dummy but it is so much better with a human id think. Some translation of the terms would be amazing. At different times in sparring I would have what I called a 'receiving hand' which is a very relaxed hand, to almost cradle a strike, like catching an egg. Is that the terms of the hand postures? Like 'recieving' hand and 'giving' ? I have no idea who much I know, and/or what its all called. Another video on this made me me realize where I learned to block, then block again rolling my elbow .... I had one guy while sparring say that no one thinks that fast, I guess I learned it. And come up and over the top with the elbow to strike, or do an intercepting fist where you block and strike at the same time. Thank you for this demonstration.

For the record, this is the Wing Tsun approach to Lap Sau training as taught in the Leung Ting lineage and its offshoots. You are right that it looks very different from the grab-roll-punch lap-sau seen in many other lineages. For that reason some prefer to call this drill "jut-chuen-da" which more accurately describes the movements. And BTW this guy's demo is technically excellent by the standards of his lineage.

Now that I've been applying this in sparring, I've noticed that in practice, the opponent's punch is higher, you know, at my head level, and it feels a bit off and my fook is transcending to a jum almost like a high gaun sau from the opposite sike to press down the attack. Is that right?

Ok the lop sao bong sao drill that he is knocking shows his misunderstanding of that drill. You are not throwing a backfist in that drill it is giving a forward pressure to strengthen the bong sao. Its not an attack. If you don't know why another instructor teaches something then you shouldn't talk about it. A drill is a drill it is not a sparring match SMH

@VTSifuSteve
@VTSifuSteve 3 жыл бұрын
"Logic" means nothing here. Something can appear logical and still not be practical. Other training methods appear goofy, but may yield results. What you need is to have good people get together free-spar and pressure test their training without ego or worrying about lineage. Otherwise all WC/WT/VT degrades and becomes ineffective over time. WSL himself knew and practiced that!
