Straight forward, no nonsense advice. Thank you! I started my first planted aquarium a few weeks ago and have been winging it on my water changes so far. Turns out I've not been far off the mark, though I will be looking at getting a thermometer and trying to temperature match the fresh water going into the tank from now on though. Great video, much appreciated!

man that's a beautiful tank. i just learned that i too am guilty of doing too large a water change. i wish there would have been a vid somewhere that explains why doing big water changes is not always a good idea--my tanks are suffering from this now :( keep up the great work and sharing valuable information.

Wow! This is amazing! I want to get into goldfish keeping and this was insanely helpful. As a kid I had a betta, and I honestly don't know how this little sucker lived for so long. I'd do 100% water changes every, idk, few months? And cleaned the whole tank top to bottom. I'm well aware now that this is god awful and have 0 intentions of re-doing it, with my only excuse being 'I was a kid and didn't know any better'. But now I will get all the proper materials and do it well. Thank you for the video!

Pro tip. You can siphon the gravel tube by putting it in your tank, filling it with water, letting the water drain 3/4ths the way out of the tube, pinch the hose, put it back into the tank and let it refill and unpinch the hose. No pumping or sucking needed XD
@MASSAquariums
@MASSAquariums 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Done that a million times
@Cherbanov
@Cherbanov 8 жыл бұрын
you dont need the pump for the hose, just put it in the aquarium and jerk it up and down fast 5 times and the sifon will start =). just a tip

One other concern I have with a python is in the filling process. If your using some of your hot water and another person in your house decides to do a load of laundry with cold water the water pressure drops and the water going to your tank gets allot hotter. This happens to me at my house when im in the shower. Now it might not harm your fish with a 20 percent change, but someone on youtube wiped out thier whole tank doing a 50 percent water change this way.

When I questioned him he says he just puts fresh cold water from the tap - makes you wonder and he's done this for years!

Hello! I have a 10 gallon for my Betta fish, i use TankFirst Complete Aquarium Water Conditioner . Which calls for one cap for 10 gallons, if i do the 25% water change which is 2.5 gallons do i just add on cap as you said you treat for the entire tank size? Also do i add the conditioner to the bucket of new water for the tank or add the new water then condition it inside the tank?

MASS Aquariums how long do you recommend waiting? I too am a beginner- got my tank set up and water in it last Tuesday. My tank is also planted. I'm wondering when to do my water change? It's a 160L which is a 42 gallon tank. Was going to do it today before I saw this comment after watching the video. I currently have 5 neon tetras. Another question I have is should I take them out because they're such small fish? Or should I leave them in?

Damn your tank is crystal clear. But I understand why now. You do a cleaning every week. My community tank water is Brown and murky. But part of the reason for that is I have only been doing Vacs/Water Changes like once a Month if that. I gotta do it way more often to keep the water clear. It's just a pain in the ass cause every time I go to do a vac my fish start freaking out like it's the end of the World or something and start getting in the way of the Gravel Vac. So while I'm trying to vac the gravel and not miss any spots at the same time I'm trying not to suck any fish up the tube. I gotta lot of Bottom Feeders in mine too.
@MASSAquariums
@MASSAquariums 4 жыл бұрын
You can put a mesh bag over the vac. The fish will get used to it
@JNC1973
@JNC1973 4 жыл бұрын
@@MASSAquariums But will the brown mushy stuff under the gravel be able to get through the mesh ya think ? Sounds like a good idea if the fish waste and leftover food can get through the mesh bag. I'll give it a try next time I vac.

I usually fill a jug full of water and dechlorinator as the last step of my water change. And then by the time I get to next water change, my water is prepared. I just stick a heater inside the jug at the start of cleaning, and because I have such a small amount of water to heat up, it's at temp by the time I get around to adding the water to the tank.

my thought is to have a separate tank to fill. and lower the ph before it enters the tank. another thing im going to try is having water sensors with an arduino to keep the overflow system safer

Hi i really enjoyed you video i am actually going to be upgrading from a 10 Gal to a 30 Gal i only have 5 neon tetras and 1 guppie . my question is ,.... what is the best way to transfer them without stressing them out? i also only have 2 live plants should i get more? if so how many more ? are there any beginner plants that you would recommend ?
@MASSAquariums

I have a bunch of videos on beginner but pants and set ups. The more plants the better I always say. You will need to cycle a new tank and then just add your fish to thatbtank

Great video, I notice in your video 9.01 you put warm water in your fish tank, warm water contains lots of heavy metals, were as the cold tap does not as much. I heat my cold water up using a heater then put it in fish tank.

So you add the water BEFORE adding the dechlorinator? Because I do mine a gallon at a time and it takes FOREVER! Also, where do you get a hose that attaches to your sink and goes down the stairs?
@MASSAquariums
@MASSAquariums 5 жыл бұрын
It’s a 50 foot python hose and yes I just dump dechlorinator right in the tank.

If my filter media has a brown material that is really thick, that is TOO dirty, right? That means too much stock and/or feedignt, right? 42g tank, one HOB filter that reads 79/105 Gallon/hour. Filter material: those cilindric with a hole, Matrix, sponges with 2 sizes...

Great video man, just a question or two from a beginner. At the end when you was refilling the water with tap. First do I use tap water conditioner while refilling or after its filled? then do I let it sit for a little or start the filter and other equipment shortly after refilling and adding whatever needed? Thanks!
@MASSAquariums

That's why I haven't purchased the python or a similar system. It doesn't seem good to put straight chlorinated tap water right into the aquarium whether or not there is extra conditioner in there or not...

I was wondering if I could use a gallon of spring water to do my water changes. I was thinking of going to Walmart and buying a few of those gallon jugs (walmart brand) and adding the 7 drops of water conditioner into it. This way when I am ready to do the water change for my fish tank I already have water prepared.
@MASSAquariums
@MASSAquariums 9 жыл бұрын
Yes you could do that. I just use tap water from the faucet. You don't need to buy your water for a fresh water tank. Make sure the temp is the same and dump it right in and add your dechlorinator right into the tank.

Thank you for answering so fast. I am going to do that first off so I have a few clean water gallons. I used a milk one, I cleaned it out as good as I could but my tank is a little foggy. Thinking maybe I didn't get all the milk out. Had my water tested and it had too much ammonia. Got it fixed now still, water is a little foggy. But my beta "Guy" is doing fine. Hoping to add some tetras eventually.
