How to do a Wrap around extension, difficult foundations part 1

Started a wrap a round extension, in this video I have started the foundations and have experienced very difficult conditions with thick concrete existing foundations that I have to break up. We pour the concrete using a pump and start with interlocking trench blocks. #bricklaying #construction #concretepumping

Great vids. I’ve started digging out the foundation for a garden room which will have an insulated slab floor. Do you think I really need to dig down to 1m for the footings though? It’s permitted development so I don’t need building regs but it is clay. Cheers

Sorry not in the trades so excuse my question. Those trench blocks make things much easier by the looks of it. How will the new building regs changes impact this. I am having an architect at present draw up our building regs drawings for an extension , and they have increased the depth of wall. Outer skin, 50mm gap, 100mm insulation, inner skin. So approx 350mm by my reckoning. Architect did state there was an alternate method that kept wall at 300mm but believed that builders may not like the approach (cannot remember how he described it). Your thoughts?. Thanks

They are an interlocking block and don’t have purp joints, the hole that’s being filled are the gaps used for the bricklayers hands in order to lift the blocks and helps to lay the heavy blocks!

Thanks for the video. Just wondering how much all that concrete you had to dispose of worked out to be. How many tonnes was it. How many 'Skip' loads did you need. I have to do some disposing of a concrete driveway myself, and trying to work out how much it weighs is almost impossible. But seeing how much you had, and knowing approximately how much it weighed would give me an idea of what I need as for as Skip bins. really instructive watching you work.

Thank youJ Jude, there was around 20 ton of concrete, the grab lorry took 18 ton and had to come over for another lift next day. He charged me £200! (cash)Hope that helps

A layman here Chris but a very good explanatory video for someone like myself. I noticed you didn’t connect the new foundation to the existing foundation with rebar (holes drilled into existing foundation, cleaned out and rebar chemically fixed into holes ready to be embedded in new concrete foundation. When is there a need to do this and when is there not a need? Cheers Chris

Good question, the rebar fixed into existing concrete by drilling and fixing with chem fixing compounds and fabricating mesh tied together with wire is generally used if its a raft foundation or if there’s a breach in the foundation! I have done a couple of videos covering this method on my youtube vids. Hope that helps.

Looking good. So when you dig 1m how much concrete do you fill it with. Is it just a depth up to the top of existing concrete foundations?

I measured down and worked out the block/brick courses and brought the concrete up to that depth, I did that by spray painting the required depth on the trench walls. so it was over the depth of the original fbds

There are lots of factors that determine the footing, mainly the buildings on top of them and the soil. Chris dug a 1m trench and I didn't see any sign of sand or clay, so it's a fairly average footing for a UK extension. To answer your question, it's probably 200mm of concrete adjusted slightly to make the courses work, but ultimately it's whatever your architect tells you to put in!

Yea they’re Imperial, not entirely sure when metric bricks came in, I was using metric bricks in 1978 Im guessing when decimalisation came in which was 1972🤔

Hi mate, nice to hear from you from down under. It depends on the ground and if its on the spec! Ive put mesh in a garage I did recently this was by my choice because of some bushes that were nearby. Hope this helps bud. Enjoy the sun ☀️
