BODY POSITION FOR STEEP HILL CLIMBS? Rough rule of thumb? As it gets steeper you are still in the default position but just squat more to lower the centre of gravity. Or if sitting on the seat, slide forward. Leaning over the bars is only for when it's very steep and must be done to avoid a backflip. I base this on training with Chris Birch we did years ago. It's wild to me to see how often and quickly they shift weight from front to back, keeping weight on the pegs. This was an awesome video, thanks for the slow mo!

eveRide ADV mr ride, long time no hear! watched your latest vid, merry holidays to you too! who is throwing that impressive wheelie in the intro part, looks like he's on a white DRZ400SM? is that you? :-)
@eveRide
@eveRide 9 жыл бұрын
CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES lol I couldn't throw a wheelie like that if my life depended on it. That was IncognitoGambino like a legend! However, I am practicing the stand-up power-on wheelies like you taught... and while I can't hold it for long, it's MASSIVELY handy in popping over objects and getting little airs off kickers. Did I mention I love you? Full on man love status.

mate, the bro love right back at you! not like let's get a motel room but more a shared manly beer after a day of wheelies lol! the short wheelie is all that's needed for practical purposes hey? anything more is just for pose value but i guess does develop good throttle and balancing skills!

I noticed something too, the reason you may want to stand up and then sit down during a hill climb is when you sit down fast after standing up you can help the tires get a bit more traction by forcing some downward pressure on it. If you feel the wheel is about to slip and lose traction, you can sit down fast and force some downward pressure

"Weight forward on the steepest part" was not given enough emphasis, that is one of the most important aside from traction, because it prevents the bike from a wheelie over

what gear do they set on that climb? do they on 2nd gear or 1st gear on this kind of hill? im a newbie rider here..
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro Жыл бұрын
At a guess I'd say 2nd and lots of clutch slipping. At least the slower bits.

Good stuff. I'm amazed at what hills I've climbed on my ktm x-w 500. I usually approach the hill in second gear and then shift down as needed. Is that ok? Some hills seem too steep to hit them in 1st.

Dude, these videos will help me alot. I haven't even rode a bike since I was 14 (5 years ago) and I used to have great throttle control but I lost it mostly. My dad almost won the ISDE west coast (US) in 1996 and I want to be that good one day.

Is the bike that Ben is on, a lot lighter than Graham's? It looks like it changes direction so much easier.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 9 жыл бұрын
***** very similar, probably more rider style. i noticed graham always seems to make things look easier compared to most riders as he's not revving the bike as much, choosing smoother lines, expending less energy... might be to do with that? certainly not knocking ben's ability of course, there's not much between them!

We did a tonne of challenging hill climbs (for me anyway) and it went pretty well but I can hardly move my arms now. I was standing with my weight to the rear, butt out and low, gripping the bike with my knees as much as I could but it felt like a constant struggle to just hang on. Was never able to relax my arms, and found it hard to maintain that box arm position. Am I doing something wrong or is this just what hill climbing is all about? Just looking for some feedback from any of you experienced folks out there.

try turning your toes in a bit, some say this helps to really grip the bike well. some bikes are easier to grip than others too e.g. you may be able to get your calves in front of the frame rails or side covers. you can stick rubber strips on for extra grip. finally there are always steg pegz.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYHcmGVmgNODbas

Thanks Barry - I'm pretty diligent about keeping my toes pointed in, my toes are usually touching the case when I ride. I've done a fare amount of horse back riding so it's a very natural position for me. I think I'll give the rubber tape a go or try to gerry rig a steg pegz set up. Maybe I'll screw some hockey pucks or rubber gaskets into my frame. My cousin welded some steel extensions on my foot pegs this weekend to make a bigger foot print. They were only $30 so we'll see if they hold up. If they are any good it's a really cheap mod as long as you have access to a welder (my cousin is a pro). They definitely helped keep my calfs from burning out after riding 6 hours a standing 80% of the time for 3 days straight. I'm thinking about doing a vlog of me learning to ride in my 40's on the cheap. Do you think there would be any interest in that? It wouldn't be a money making thing, just a hobby. I've checked fairly extensively on YT and I haven't found any adults chronically the dirt learning process right from the beginner stage. It wouldn't be a how to series, because I don't know what I'm doing, but more just taking stock of the trials and triumphs of a beginner to hopefully a competent trail rider.

+markmtbrider actually that's a really good point mark and i can't remember... it would be very interesting to know if they just stayed in 2nd and slipped the clutch even at the steepest bits.

Not sure why you would say weight on the rear to start with, it’s mostly centered and leaning forward at best and all the way forward in the steepest parts. Every time weight is at the back there is a loss of traction, this is evident in the videos especially of the pro riders

@@crosstrainingenduro’briefly’ 😂 This video even mentions ‘trials heritage’. Perhaps they should put seats back on trials bikes given your breakthrough theory of weighting the seat rather than the pegs 😂
