Hombre, are you for real? You are the baddest most humble conguero out there. Gracias por todos.

Eric, Thank you so much for yet another little gem. I know you take requests, so here goes: a video demonstrating how you work with a metronome. I had a teacher, a professional musician, who would go to sleep with one in his ear. How do you work it in to your practice session? It is not as simple as it sounds (no pun intended).

gustavo b The Metronome!!! I’ve been meaning to cover this topic as it is VITAL for any musician.... I’ll definitely do that soon

For those of you not familiar with polyrhythms, what Percussion Life is playing is a 4 over 6 poly. If a rhythm is a 4 over 6, the meter is 6 beats with four EVENLY spaced beats played over those 6 beats. Here is the mind warp part - In the beginning of the tutorial, I heard it as a 6 over 4 feel and by the end of the tutorial, I heard it as a 4 over 6. I thought perhaps that it was PL but I realized it was me hearing the beat from a different paradigm i.e meter. Might be a great idea for ear training exercise - play the same pattern at the same speed but alternate the emphasis on 6 and 4 meters to change how you feel or perceive the rhythm. What's important to understand is that even though a 6 over 4 & 4 over 6 rhythm is played technically the same, where one emphasizes the meter determines the "feel" or the sound of the pattern.

I love the Afro side of Afro-Cuban when it comes to conga rhythms so I really liked this tutorial. I’m a relative newbie (a year) so if you could suggest any conga music/players that are more Afro centered or more weighted to jazz as opposed to Latin Jazz, that would be awesome. I recently discovered the Kahil ElZabar ensemble’s “Brother Malcolm” tune. A 7/8 rhythm that really opened up possibilities for me as far as ways of approaching the conga other than strictly working within the Latin Jazz paradigm. Thanks!

Saludos y muchas bendiciónes, what a nice rhythum, I have to say I was waiting for something like this. It sound like abaqua Havana style if I'm not mistaken, correct me if I'm wrong otherwise its a beautiful 6/8 style. Thank you so much, for showing it to us. LoL Ω*****

Bongo Fury it’s actually a Steer skin on a Conga... the other two Tumbas have Mule heads on them (from Meinl)... I got my steer skin from www.manitopercussion.com I personally love the sound it gives.

Absolutely! Many rap and hip-hop musicians used his loop samples alot from Incredible Bongo Band album, Apache.

And, like Conte and Castro, Errisson plays with many popular artists, and he plays percussion part for The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back", "ABC", and more.

In general, If you use a Tumba and a conga, does the 3rd drum need to be a Quinto? Or can one use another Conga or Tumba? What 3 drums do you usually use in combo?
@APercussionLife6 жыл бұрын
So it really depends on the setting... But I normally tend to play on two tumbas and a conga... But if I know I'm going to need a high pitched drum at some point... I'd use a quinto as my third and then tune as it were a tumba and then tune it high when I need it.
@DRUMMERCALL6 жыл бұрын
TY for your reply. If you use 2 Tumbas, how do you tune them? I assume the Congas is the middle drum..... BTW: your videos are Awesome!@@APercussionLife
@APercussionLife6 жыл бұрын
DRUMMERCALL That’s correct! Normally with two Tumbas I’d tune G (lowest) and then (B) the other Tumba... and my Conga would be a (C).... here’s a vid where I covered most of my tuning strategies! And thank you!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3PWXpuGe5J6e6c
