So let me see if I am clear. Your argument is that it is easier for my 4th grader to multiply 4 times 10, subtract, then multiply 4 times 10 again, subtract and then have him figure out how many times four goes into 12 using his math facts vs. having him figure out how many times four goes into nine, and then how many times four goes into 12 using his math facts; I don't buy the argument. The folks who created Core took a time proven method that breaks a complex problem down into simple easily followed steps and turned it on its head. My hunch is that the teachers and the bureaucrats who support this approach have spent most of their careers in academics and not in the real world. If Common Core is so great than how come I was able to teach my son long division and have him completing complex problems like a pro in less than 10 minutes yet his math teacher has him for over an hour a day and still sends him home not having a solid grasp of the approach. With funding issues all over the country the last thing teacher's want is for their customers (the parents) to have to come home after a hard day at work and spend precious time watching videos so they can teach their kids how to do their homework. Don't get me wrong I think you did a great job explaining the process which explains the thumbs up (I gave you one too); however, I would not misinterpret these positive comments or reviews as a positive review for Common Core, it truly does suck and needs to be voted out.
@MyTutoringBee9 жыл бұрын
+Nate Miller Hey Nate. Thanks so much for your comment. Honestly, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Common Core has really turned things upside down in the education world. I think that just like anything, moderation is key. In my humble opinion, common core does have good intentions - I just think that it should be used as a support method, or just another way to get the information across to the students and not as a substitute for more traditional methods. A lot of times, I show my students the traditional long division method and they try it a few times, practice it, and are really good at using that method. Awesome! Other times, I try and try and try to show students how to do traditional long division, and they just keep getting mixed up, confused, irritated, down on themselves, and frustrated. However, since learning this "Big 7" method, if I try the traditional method a few times and it just isn't sticking, I'll say, "OK, check this out" and show them the "Big 7" method. Light bulb moment! It just works for them. They are so excited that they can do long division. To me, that's a success. I don't care what method they use, as long as it makes sense to them, makes them feel successful, and gets them to the place they need to be. The only reason you don't see more videos out there in KZbin land on traditional methods, is because, well, most people already know how to do it that way. What really gets me, is when teachers (and parents) force kids to do one method or the other over and over with little success. My theory is, if it works for you, awesome. Use it. If it doesn't, let's find something that will. And that's why I make these videos. It might not help all, but it will help some, and that's a good day's work for me. Also, I do appreciate you giving me a thumbs up and saying I explained it well. Thanks! I love honest feedback. I think the positive reviews and comments are just people genuinely appreciating the explanation - no matter the reason they are searching for an explanation on Big 7 division. I'm not promoting Big 7 necessarily, or Common Core for that matter. However, I am glad it's around.

+MyTutoringBee Sorry I can't resist this anecdote. Your comment reminded me of one day in 10th grade geometry: After graphing whatever it was we had to graph, we had to count how far from the center lines to get the answer. The teacher realized one day what the problem was because we were failing our quizzes. He simply said "What I do, myself, is count the *spaces* instead of the *lines* ". "OHHHH!!!" we said. It was very memorable to feel that 'click'. This approach to division had that feeling 20 years later.
@MyTutoringBee9 жыл бұрын
+Brad Tippett In college, I was taking my "Elementary Math" course and we were learning about how to teach number sense and the logistics behind our base-ten system. Our teacher tried and tried and tried to get us to understand how to use the same system except in base-seven or base-five or base-whatever. I don't know what it was exactly that she was or was not saying, but we just didn't get it. Then one day our teacher was sick and we had a sub. Again, I don't remember exactly what the sub said to make it 'click' but boy that room was glowing with all of the light bulbs floating over our heads! That's when I realized how important it would be, for me as a teacher, to make sure I try to explain concepts in any way shape or form I could find.

Just keep in mind the basics of division - to take a total and break it apart into equal sized groups. Because our place value system is a base-10 system, we have to constantly keep regrouping tens into ones, hundreds into tens, thousands into hundreds, etc.

What I really like about this method is that students can tailor it as they need. Some students may need to break the problem down by just finding groups of 10, 5, or 2 until they reach the end. Other students can look at a problem and go wait, I know that 2 x 17 = 34, so if my dividend is 36 the answer must be 17R2. It makes the students think about the size of the dividend the whole time they're dividing, so it improves number sense. When I was a kid doing traditional long division I would get caught up when zeros came into play, because I wasn't thinking about the place value of the numbers I was working with. I've been using this method with a group of 4th graders, and they've picked it up really quickly. Thank you for this video!!
@MyTutoringBee7 жыл бұрын
Yes! That's why I love it too. Yes, it is a bit "longer" than traditional division, but the number sense is present throughout the whole problem! Glad you liked my video. Thanks for your comment.

Hmmmmmm. This seems a tad absurd to me. It seems like a lot more trouble than regular division. Maybe it could be what would help some children understand, but It seems like something more complicated than simply doing it the way it has always been done. just my two cents. Common core is going to be the down fall of this country.
@MyTutoringBee9 жыл бұрын
+Nixie Knox Thanks for your comment! I agree that it is very different than traditional long division. Sometimes when things are different than what we already know, it immediately gets a lot of rejection. However, this method does work wonders for a lot of my kids. Not all, that's for sure, but some do really NEED this method. I think both methods are great ways to divide. Everyone just needs the chance to choose which one is best for them.

Thanks for this video. My son's teacher sent out an email today announcing the new division method upcoming this week, but no learning materials to support parents learning it. I needed this. I have had a lot of adventures learning the various methods that my son is being taught in school to do math. My math skills are improving as a result - my mental facility with numbers especially so. It's amazing how ugly all the shortcuts we use to do math on the fly look when they are written out on paper - I do division this way, but only when I can't write the problem out (or use a calculator). It's almost like we learned the prettiest way to do math when we were kids, but not necessarily the most intuitive or even the easiest. Thanks again. :)
@lauralewis67877 жыл бұрын
I teach this method, as well as the standard algorithm, to my students. I have found that students who struggle with their math facts prefer this method.I myself prefer the standard algorithm. Also, while reading the comments I saw where someone said this isn't efficient with numbers in the thousands. I disagree. If a student is dividing 5,674 by 4 than they can start by thinking "4 times 1,000 equals 4,000". You don't have to subtract groups of ten. I teach my students to think of facts for 1, 10, 100, 2, 20, 200, 5, 50, and 500 because those are usually easy facts. If our dividend is really big then we can think of facts for 1,000; 2,000; and 5,000. Students should always hunt for the product that is as close to the dividend as they can get without going over. That way they won't have to subtract a ton of times.

good stuff - 1 think I would add - you're listing the factors on the right side...its helpful to "line up" the multiplication problem that you use next to (to the direct right of) the product that you will subtract. Makes it a little easier for kids to follow.
@MyTutoringBee7 жыл бұрын
Yes! I agree. I'm not sure why I didn't do that in my video as I always line up the numbers on the right with the product that I'm subtracting within the big 7 when I'm working with students. Maybe I was nervous and not thinking!!!! :-D

First. Nice great video. I'm a teacher, and I couldn't figure out what my son was bringing home. So, on that level -- thanks! Here's how I see this -- and parents are coming on this thread with concerns because it's an odd way to teach division (cases where this reaches a struggling student notwithstanding, of course). Math should be efficient. This isn't efficient at all once you get into the thousands. The other thing -- as I'm watching my 4th grader struggle through this -- there's no sense of place value because they're always going the easiest way which involves sets of 10s. One of the great benefits of teaching traditional division is that you require students to look at place value and assess it before moving on. Like you said, you said, you could just subtract 4's over and over. This method is only a short step away from that. In a way it's an over simplification of what actually needs to be learned. In his class, for example, this is how they're taught. He does the short problems very easily. But when I give him long problems with remainders, he's clueless and disorganized because by the time he gets into the 10 thousands place, he's already to the bottom of the paper.
@MyTutoringBee7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment! I'm so glad you found it helpful with your son's work. That is EXACTLY what I created this channel for. I run my own tutoring business, and I was seeing so many of my clients (parents) confused and frustrated by the new methods they saw coming home from school. I honestly love all the debate that happens on this ONE VIDEO out of the many that I've made! I guess some people either love it or hate it. And that's OK with me. My theory is: I'll teach you all the methods I know, and then you can choose the best one for you and/or the situation! I do have to disagree with you about there not being a sense of place value with this method. I feel that this method is all about place value. How many 10s can I take away from this number? How many 100s? 1,000s? etc. To what extent it's used, of course, is a different issue. I agree that just finding multiples of 10 for the divisor will fill up your page fast! I'd use that sort of situation as an opportunity to show how multiples of 100, 1,000, 10,000, etc. could be helpful. I've even had parents of my students try to "race" their kid - parent doing traditional method and kid doing Big 7. The parents were amazed at how quickly their kid could get the answer with no mistakes. It wasn't always the fastest method, though - so that's motivation to learn both ways! Cheers!

Does this strategy work on every equation example decimals
@MyTutoringBee9 жыл бұрын
adde s The short answer is, yes. You would just need to add your decimal and how ever many zeros as place holders after the decimal that you need. I tell my students to pay attention to the directions to see if it asks them to round to a specific place value (such as hundredths) and then add one more digit for rounding purposes (so for rounding to hundredths you would have zeros out to the thousandths). For example, if the directions ask you to round to the nearest hundredth, and you're dividing 456 by 7, you would write 456.000 under the division bar and treat it like you're dividing 456,000 by 7. It wouldn't come out evenly, but it doesn't matter because you would have enough digits to round to the nearest hundredth place. Thanks for your question! You just gave me my next video idea for this Friday. :)

I do this in my head sometimes, with really big numbers, and it's easier to hold on my head. However, whenever I write long division problems out on paper, the original method is more trustworthy, as it involves fewer operations and steps. Why this has become the common core method escapes me. As an aside, this method does not apply for using long division with polynomials, such as in calculus. A student in calculus who had learned long division this way would have to use the old method anyway.
@MyTutoringBee7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yes, the traditional method is fewer steps, I agree. I think this is just taught within the common core methodology as an alternative way, but isn't the ONLY way that is taught. But your point about division with polynomials does make me wonder...using long division for polynomials doesn't *exactly* follow the rules for traditional division either. You start off with only dividing the first term of each polynomial - so one could argue that this is an alternative method, too. And isn't factoring also another way to divide a polynomial? Regardless, I see your point. I just like to have several options and be able to pick the one I think will work best in that situation! :)

I remember my teacher teaching me this when i was in 3rd grade and didn’t understand it so i learned long division, i came to this video because my little brother was learning the big 7 and I realized that i never knew how to do the big 7 until today when i watched this, surprisingly im in 10th grade taking AP classes without learning a basic 3rd grade division method😅

couldn't you also just add a 0 to the "remainder" to get decimals, or does that not work in all situations. for example the 62/5 you would add a 0 to the 2 to make it 20, then divide it by 5 to get 4 giving you 12.4. does this work in all situations or am i forgetting something?

That is definitely easier. It seems to cut out most of the subtraction. And that would have been immensely helpful to me as a child.

I totally agree - I wish I had some of these strategies when I was a kid learning all of this!
