I must say as long as I have been doing carpenter work you do show excellent instructional videos. I myself when I do tongue and groove I use adhesive on the floor and nail about every 5 boards it depends on the width of the floor or the job itself. I can tell on your videos that you use some old carpenter school tricks of the trade my dad and I use to this day. Excellent videos!!

What's great about this video is that it provides an understanding of what's happening when nail guns are used during a floor install. I had an idea of what they do, but now that I need add a small landing extension to my floor and I do not want to go buy a nail gun just for that, it's really reassuring seeing it done by hand in this video. After seeing this, I'm sure that I can do this myself and it'll look great the first time.

Great informative videos! I love blind nailing to hide attachments. I have also nailed blindly on numerous occasions.. I blindly didn't see my finger and "nailed" it with the hammer bringing me close to using bad language and loosing my salvation! Thanks for these DYI videos Leah!

Great videio. Pre-drilling can also be helpful in preventing splitting of the boards when nailing by hand. You can even pre-drll the boards ahead of time before you lay the boards down. if you are hand nailing, this will make the nailing easier and faster even if splitting is not a problem. For those of us with bad knees this will save time and pain.

Pro installer. The width of the plank determines how it is nailed on ceilings. Wider planks are face nailed. Narrower planks are angle nailed through the tongue.

A better "beater block" would be a 6" cutoff of the tongue & groove. Then there is no damage on the tongue you are installing. Tongue and groove vaulted ceilings can be a real pain.

One small suggestion to an excellent totorial: use a scrap of T & G about 6 inches long to tap the courses together. This eliminated the possibility of flattening the tongue, making it harder tto tap together..

Hello, i an in the middle of building a 24x9 ft porch/deck and i ean across this 2x6 t&g notty appearance grade pine boards at home depot at a great price, my question is will this type of decking have alot of problems early especially part of it being in the california sun and some rain? I was thinking of caulking around the posts and using thompsons oil base water sealant on all sides. I will be picture framing the deck too. any suggestions?

any tips for setting 23 gage pins with a nail set? i dont need to do it often but when i do its always a pain. and i end up making a much bigger hole then i wanted haha

+Joe Spaz Hello Joe, Those pins are so small that setting them with a nail set would be a challenge. The average working pressure for pneumatic nailers tend to be around 90 psi....perhaps all that's needed is a slight bump up is psi to bury the pin heads....however, I would not exceed the maximum psi recommended for your particular nail gun.

+HeyPockyWay it doesn't. The key is that each piece is nailed to the floor at the tounge, so the tounge/groove can't slide apart. Since the tounge is nailed to the floor, the groove attached to it is then also secure from lifting because they are tightly fit together.

+Fran L Hello Fran, Furring strips in combination with the tongue and groove panels could bump out the surface as much as 1 1/2 "......wall studs run vertically, so attaching furring strips horizontally will give you a solid nailer.
