@@GregMacD I watched the whole thing and honestly didn’t notice any speech impediment. I work with people with thick accents so it has completely desensitized me to any “abnormalities” in speech. I’ve started to listen for the content of the words rather than the accuracy how it’s pronounced. I would bet that for multilingual people, your impediment is so minor that it’s unnoticeable unless they’re actively trying to hear it.

I was surprised at how easily simple this is. I knew about the trick and tried doing what I thought was the technique on my own but failed. Turns out I was doing it right the whole time, I probably wasn't tapping A fast enough. After about 2-3 attempts after watching this I glitched my way up those stairs a few times.

The great thing about speed running Mario 64 is that there is actually very few 'tricks' you have to perform, with this being the hardest. You can go at your own pace and still impress everyone you know :P So glad to hear that you and your kid enjoy it!

My only question is: are you sure you are playing a viable version of it? Virtual Consoles / Emulator's work fine. But if you're playing the remake it will not work. If not, my only suggestion would be to keep at it, and pay close attention to the controller display in the video. Where the analog stick is pointing as A LOT to do with this working or not. Let me know if you get it :)

It should work just fine on the Wii version so it's not that. What kind of controller are you using? I've had problems with the stock controller that comes with the Wii. If not that it is likely either a issue with not mashing A enough, or releasing the Z button when you land.

I can do it more consistently now. So here are my notes. I play on the emulator Project v1.6 and Xbox 360 controller. * You have to rapidly mash A/jump button right after he lands. You should practice timing this because you don't have to continuously mash the A/jump button all throughout. * You won't be able to execute the move just using your thumb to mash the A/jump button. You have to do the backwards long jump and then position your hand so you can quickly mash the A/jump button AFTER he lands. * For the 50-star door, try to align yourself on the stairs as in the video. It's easier to backwards long jump when you can just hold up or down with no varied angles. Use the Mario camera and extend it. * You'll notice Mario begin to motion to speed up and after this motion, if you don't tap the jump button fast enough, he'll just cancel and do a simple jump. Right when that speed up motion occurs, you need to smash the jump button quickly and the continue to smash quickly to successfully pull it off. (See 1:08 for an example, Mario will glide upward across the stairs and make a stutter noise). * Sometimes you may immediately pass through the door or you may hit the wall. If you hit the wall, you still might be able to get through if you had gained enough speed prior to that, so continue to do a couple more BLJs to see if that works. * It's easier to just reset if you don't get it before moving past the middle of the stairs. Just reset and try to get the trick before reaching the upper half of the stairs.

You're going to hate me, but honestly just make sure you're holding down that Z button as tight as you can. That usually happens due to it not being held when you land after a jump. Either that or just not spamming quick enough.

Yea I guess you could use pause buffering for BLJ's. The only issue would be finding the exact frame where Mario starts skipping the steps. And since the trick is dependent on when you're jumping and where you are on the stairs I guess it could be really difficult. Either way, if you think that could help for sure try it!!

That's likely because you aren't spamming A fast enough. You get kicked out of doing long jumps if you don't time your landing right.

Hey! What I would try is try mashing only when Mario is close to touching the stairs... kinda like just doing bursts of mashing really fast. Also make sure your camera is angled like in the video, those things usually help me.

Probably the virtual console version and the Wii U version are the Shindo Mario 64 and the BLJ is patched

It's actually not. Other than the DS version all of the Mario 64 ports are the same. Not sure if this is to make speed runner's lives easier or not, but it is handy.

That's super common. It likely more has to do with the mashing speed. If you listen to how fast actual speed runners mash it's unreal. Keep practicing, it sounds like you are really close.

I believe you might be thinking of the 1981 arcade game donkey kong. This is actually the 1996 game Super Mario 64. While I'm sure the latter game took some influences from the original 1981 title, they are two completely different games.

I recorded this on emulator so you should be fine on that end. Make sure you mash jump as fast as you can, and try to mash strategically so you are pressing the button the most when Mario is about to hit the stairs.

Yes, it does not work in that version. Any direct port of the N64 version works, but it doesn't with the remake.

In Mario Odyssey inside the inverted pyramid. There is an 8-bit mural, with three purple coins. You have to jump up and then hit a block jump up and jump backwards and jump up and jump backwards. A lot of things can cause that. A big one would be if you move the control stick slightly. Another thing is your mashing speed. I find that mashing extremely hard in waves (when Mario is about to hit the stairs being the fast part) can really help.

I think it's at a very specific part of the left side of the wall. I can honestly say I have never had it happen to me, but I've seen one or two streams where it's happened. Maybe it more has to with angle of approach rather than speed.

So that's usually an issue either with your finger slipping off of the Z button or you jolting to far left or right with the joy stick. Hopefully you got it though!!!!

dude I'm doing this over a hour on an original nintendo 64 does it work only on pc version or?

Basically the only versions that it doesn't work on is the DS and the Switch All Stars version. N64 should be fine. Have you gotten past the first set of stairs (before the 50 star door)? I would say try to practice on the infinte stair case as you can kinda just keep trying.

Im not too familiar with sm64, whats with the long staircase ? is that just to trick people im guessing? How is the top of it normally accessed?

You usually can only get to the top after getting 70 stars. Without the stars you usually just endlessly climb. This is a glitch that allows you to skip getting 70 stars.

Try mashing in bursts. Go really hard when you're about to hit the stairs then lay off for a second.

I like to start literally on the very first step and try to angle myself to Mario is completely facing the camera with his back flush with the stairs.@@fabmoneyy

As long as the emulator is playing an n64 rom you should be fine. Are you using a controller attached to your phone or just on screen buttons?

@@guest7638 It does tend to be extremely difficult to do on an Android without a controller. There might be a button press limiter in the options somewhere that's preventing quick inputs to be made. This is sometimes built in so you don't accidentally trigger rapid inputs. However I would really recommend you try to hook up a playstation / xbox controller via bluetooth. It's just going to work better.
