Okay, so for block and counter techniques I am going to use the format of Ippon Kumite; one step basic pair work. We are going to vary the distance so the first set you will see will have the middle distance of the punching. The second set you will see will have a closer range with striking techniques. The third set you will see will have kicking techniques at a longer range. We will show three different ranges with this.
First one I am going to attack Jordan to the face. Jordan half speed. Then with speed.
The next one is going to be to the middle level. Slow speed at first. Then at real speed.
The next one will be, so that is a lower level just above the belt.
Now Alex is going to attack and I will show closer range distance. Half speed. Around elbow strike.
Knife hand strike.
And back fist strike.
Next Alex is going to show a longer distance and he is going to kick. To the face first.
So these are examples of several distances of counter and their variations and also gives you an idea of the fine control which we have to exercise when we are working with our partner in the dojo.

There will always be openings, its upon you to create the speed and reaction to make the opening as quick as possible. When you get to a higher level you will understand this. Very good video on basic distance.

You see block AND punch here. Notice that he pulls the block back as he punches. The opponents attacking arm can unintentionally strike back to your wide open face (eye) as you counter punch. That is the value of countering with a block AS you punch with a foot maneuver to launch your action.

People don't understand demonstrations do they? A street fight will never play out like this. However, these types of movements can save you from a punch or a kick since their so easy to do.

@aceace3700

why do people keep on saying that these won't work? If you are talking about gang fights, of course it won't, simply because karate is not for gang fights and these blocks would actually help you block easier. For tose who doesnt understand karate and thinks that karate is just for every types of fight, let me get this straight, base on my knowledge about karate which happens to be kyokushin karate, they are for self defense, one should have self descipline and its a part of the law or the ones that you say before starting formal training, it is said there that you should live your life through the descipline of karate(if you do karate).

+KPOP girl Most of the time in street fights, people do not know how to correctly fight, resulting in lots of grappling/grabing and pushing, akward and constant jabs, also sissy kicking. Most of the time with people who learned a martial art the correct way these street fights simply end with a Powerful blow to the head/body. There are many people who do not fully finish a martial arts, do not practice, do not get fully explained, are too lazy, or just quit, and those people get into street fights not knowing what to do, or how to do it. That is why so many people complain about martial arts not working.

+SlickMystery !! Well said. Both of you. In order for you to have the proper reaction (being able to use different skill sets without having to think about it), you need to be practicing consistently. To the point where it's pretty much a lifestyle. Learning the techniques without applying them to your daily life through sparring and regular training will not be useful in the way most hope for.
@Sin6667

***** I'll agree with you there. There are a lot of black belts who have trained in places that have strayed away from the original intent and meaning of the art thus losing much of the benefits. I have though seen plenty of amazing black belts.

My teachers and other people who are in a higher belt rank than me say that the power comes from the yell.It also signifies and lets your opponent know that you are down with your moves and punches or whatever,and that they can move.Think of it as a little similar to a battle cry.

actually Phil, Dan means step, level, grade, or degree. and since Dan in a martial arts setting typically refers to Black Belts. It is technically just as accurate to say 3rd Degree Black Belt as 3rd Dan, or Sandan.

Sadly it is an obsolete fighting style, based on defending against a hypothetical brawler that lived 200+. years ago in late feudal Japan. Yes you are right. Nowadays brawlers have things called methamphetamines and king kits from behind. This system assumes your attacker will fight with honor and chivalry, as was the norm in feudal Japan.

+Adrian Price It's still useful to learn though, because learning these blocks helps you in other ways. A lot of the training is to sharpen reflexes. So you may not necessarily be using the exact blocks in a street fight that you would when your opponent is a martial artist, but you will still be better at detecting your opponents telegraphs and range.
@fred4800
@fred4800 9 жыл бұрын
Sin6667 your right but it's not really ideal to teach students stuff like this at white belt lol. When you start boxing they don't get you lifting weights and running around so toy can be buff for boxing, it would make more sense if they taught the right techniques at the right times and those blocks techniques when your like purple belt.

donkey kong Well I wasn't commenting on what stage of training people should learn it, I was just saying these specific exercises aren't necessarily the functionality side to a faceted training routine.
