6:48 The end of this video is worth its weight in gold "It's not about the style as much as it is about the teacher, and if you're not willing to think outside the box, you're never going to master the art… Tradition is not about preserving the ashes, but rather about keeping the flame burning because that's how the art stays alive."

There's actually a song by The Longest Johns called "Ashes." They're a group that's focused on sea shanties but rather than just staying fixated on only the traditional songs they also add to the genre. They got hate from the traditionalists stuck in what was aptly called "the classical mess," and the song is their reply. "Watch that old fire as it flickers and dies That once blessed the household and lit up our lives It shone for the friends and the clinking of glasses I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes Capture the wild things and bring them in line And own what was never your right to confine The lives and the loves and the songs are what matters I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes..." It conveys a surprisingly similar message to the summation here at the end of the video.

Always stay open minded & remember that there is always someone better than you out there! Stay humble, respectful and as Uncle Ben said to Peter Parker "With great power, comes great responsibility!" Thank you Stan Lee!! I'm only a 2nd Dan in Shotokan (I started when I was 9 years old) and I had a really old school Sensei, who changed my life! My Daughters Sensei is a 7th Dan, and he's in his late 30's and that blows my mind!!! I'm 54 now and I'm a 6th Dan in Shinobi Ninjutsu! It's my love and my passon since I was 19!! I've been trying to learn Wing Chun for the last 5 years! I just wish I started learning Wing Chun 40 years ago, because I'm never going to have the time to become a real Master at it - I love all the nuances to it! It's such a beautifully fluid and dynamic Marshall Art! I still remember punching through my first breeze block at 14 and I was stunned how easy it was... scared the shit outta me to be honest!

As a Wing Chun instructor myself, the comment about "I was told this was used for finding your opponent in the dark..." I immediately thought, "well, that's like the idea of the Chum Kiu form (Wing Chun's second form that means 'Seeking Bridge'). You're seeking a bridge/contact with your opponent, and it's very much like reaching out in the dark. You don't know what you're gonna run into, until you make physical contact to use the skills developed from the Chi-Sau training. So, that may have been a metaphor for what it actually is, and just got lost in time/translation." Besides being in the Muk Yan Jong Fat (Wooden Dummy Techniques), that movement is also found in the Chum Kiu (Seeking Bridge) form!
@mr-oso-805
@mr-oso-805 9 ай бұрын
I'm not even familiar with the move. But, I knew it was metaphoric when he said it. I'm sure he did also... I would hope. I thought he was just complimenting the instructor by explaining it like that.
@streamofconsciousness8312
@streamofconsciousness8312 8 ай бұрын
Yea in the tradition I am learning they call that technique that he referred to with that metaphor as "sinewalli" or "cinewali", idk how you would spell it, but its common in phillipino and japanese karate systems. I think the "finding ones way in the dark" is because sometimes we practice it with our eyes closed, because its all about developing that tactile grip. Its like a sticky hands drill but with more real life striking and distancing involved. Its one of my favorite drills

The second form is introducing shifting and pivoting, bridging the gap between one’s self and an opponent, every moment in Wing Chun takes the centre line and attack in defence, it would be counterproductive to shift forward and not send hands to seek or attack as Wing Chun fighting stance is exactly the same as the stance in the first form so any forward movement is engaging with attack. This is what I was taught and believe to be the basic principles of Wing Chun.

Somethings to note: As you showed in your trips to China, White Crane influenced karate, and the birthplace of White Crane is 永春 Yong Chun (Wing Chun in Cantonese). The art in the video is 咏春 Wing Chun, the same pronunciation. There's also another lineage called 永春 in Hong Kong. Wing Chun is literally an offshoot of White Crane. Sometimes White Crane was just called 永春拳 Wing Chun boxing, there are still styles of Crane that use this name in Taiwan. And that's how Wing Chun is related to karate 😃 Another note: I've seen Goju ryu practicioners using a form of wooden dummy, maybe one day you can make a video on that as well!

Great video and loving your content 🙏 please note as an instructor for Ip Man and Ip Chun lineage we are taught the dummy is a moulding tool and shouldn’t be used to desensitise your arms and definitely not break your hand. Contact and feeling is important in feeling what your opponent is doing, so you want to keep the nerves active. (One inch energy can be practiced on the dummy by placing your finger tips on the main body then using the palm to develop explosive power.) I really agree with your open minded philosophy and I’m looking forward to your next wing chun video 🙏

I loved the message of this video. In my school we study various lineages of Wing Chun (from now going back in time towards the Shaolin roots: Hong Kong, Red Boats, Chi Sim, Hung Fa Kuen, etc) and the beautiful part is: the more back in time you go, the more you learn of the Wing Chun Formula. It's a series of principles of time (tempo/distance), space (positioning, footwork and dividing the 3d space in sections) and energy (faat ging and other methods for hitting hard) that guides you in the martial science. Once you grasp the fundamentals of the science and express them in your way, there's art, there's style! It's ironic how people got so attached to Bruce that they forgot what he teached: learn the science, do not get hung up on other people's styles.

The wooden dummy is awesome for developing sensitivity in your forearms. I cannot stress highly enough how it helps in close combat.

Grande Jesse! Sei una persona estremamente intelligenza e sensibile, priva di arroganza e soprattutto superbia: hai compreso la vera origine del karate e che proviene dagli stili cinesi del Sud, come ad esempio il Winchung ! Complimenti ! Bravo

Funny, it actually IS what I thought. I'm a novice at best and have never practiced on a wooden dummy before, but from observing people training with it, I could tell that it's not to practice your attacks, it's to practice blocking and intercepting. Great video!

people think it’s bullshit because it’s unusual and shows up in movies where it’s not explained well, but blocks, counters, and hand traps in the pocket are widespread in striking sports. Not to mention the conditioning of the arms.

It's use is also largely about learning correct distance. It's movement can also help teach you to react to the pressure it will give back. Basically Chi Sao. Once you understand it, you can use it for benifit. And as this Sifu said, it's never late, it never complains and it never gets tired.

The simplicity of wang chun proves its divinity. It was developed by a woman who was undoubtedly under weight and lacking in mass, but it makes up for it woth exquisite beauty in its simplicity and potency of power in a simple format. Such a beautiful and deadly art.

Practiced Wing Chun for three years. I can say by itself it does not make much sense, but combining it with my Sanda and Judo background it gave me a lot of useful tools when at knee/elbow range. Its arm manipulation techniques are very good.

Ive seen two demonstrations of Lee doing the '1 inch' 'punch'. In the one you included, its clearly a 1 inch 'push', which would have no punching power. The other video he clearly pulls his hand back about 1-2 feet before punching, making it not '1 inch'. Frankly, I am tired of the fascination with Bruce Lee. Every year the tales of his ability get taller and taller.

I don't ever believe the inch punch is really for achieving big hurt in its original form (that is, within literally an inch). It's more a training to achieve quick, short jabs given very limited space, As Wing Chun is supposed to be for very close range combat. Most of the attacks were designed to hit from hand trapping distance. Without proper training to improve the explosiveness those short range attacks will be practically harmless
@EmperorJ123
@EmperorJ123 8 ай бұрын
@jackyjackson604 The compression ratio on certain parts of the body would hurt. Possibly its just useful for creating imbalance. I reckon it's training technique to build total body responses and has practical applications. If you are close range you can get a punch loaded up and off, with greater power than if you just practiced normal distance. The physics of it is undeniable.

@@jackyjackson604 I disagree with these techniques being practically harmless without training. I think if you applied them as instructed they'd just enough

Wonderful video. After three ambush attempts that failed, I decided to do my best to learn one inch everything. When I was attacked by Elvis, I was dropped with a fake and a bite that sent me into the air, then immediately bitten on the left side of my left knee and had to fight passing out and let him go again with another bite. I only had one inch to punch and where I punched the dog rang his bell, stopped the attack and backed him up two feet. The next decision I made was him or me, but had to be wary of a pit bull that took up a cornering position.

I have never trained with American martial arts instructs except once the rest we’re all decent students of Ip chun cause I used to live in China! They said that they wouldn’t teach any other American besides me!’ Cause I was one of the first Americans who addressed them in their native tongue from what they said and that I showed even more respect and view about honor than any other American that they had ever met before! And they asked me how do I know so much about their Chinese or eastern philosophies?’ So I told them that I learn from a book that was about Ip Man himself!❤

Practicing Sil Lim Tau and the Wooden Dummy I was able to develop a good 'inches punch'. I tested it on my brother. 😁 I learned the Wing Chun online, but it helped I have a backround in Bagua and Karate. The Wooden Dummy is an excellent friend for solo training.

Thank you SO much for including the part about why Wing Chun uses the knuckles that it does. I have seen far too many videos (elsewhere) that do not explain the why, leading many to think they can punch this way effectively to the head without hurting their hand. "Punch soft parts" should go wthout saying? No, no. NO. Definitely say that part! And you did, so bless you for that. I never knew Wing Chun has the same leg catches that I like to use. Fascinating.
