I think it's worth pointing out that this is a good technique for taking drops at trail speed. But the technique of sliding the bike forward over the drop is valid for when you roll up too slow to clean the drop using only your momentum. But it's not like you want to lean back. You just want to slide your front tire out enough to let your rear tire clear the edge before the front tire pitches forward and bucks you. And then you can shift back to a neutral position while you are dropping and still land without having your arms extended. It's worth practicing both drop methods because there will always be that blind drop that you thought you could roll over then realize at the last moment you can't. I mean, you should always scout the trail first. But, you know, sometimes you don't.

NOT extending your arms and leaning back before the drop is brilliant! I see now that this has been the cause of my sketchy drops. Neutral, attach position gives you options. Awesome as always 👍😊

Great vid. One thing that I don’t think was mentioned was DO NOT TOUCH the rear tire. This is much harder with 29ers than 650b bikes. It becomes very apparent if you’re going to slow, and try to save the drop by throwing your weight low and back right as you go over the edge. If your ass touches that tire the front of bike is going to fall like a rock and you’re going straight over the bars. Keep your ass low, but don’t touch the tire. 5:03 is a prime example of being very close.
@steveflor99424 жыл бұрын
Dan Ervin Oh yes, that's a good point. If your butt hits the rear tire, the bike will stall. Kamikaze landing.... I really should buy a full face helmet :)

It depends, if you are coming in way to slow then you have to manual off the drop otherwise you will nosedive but if you are hitting it at speed the definitely drop your weight and push forward and down to make contact with the landing as quickly as possible

This is good advice for that drop and in general...although their are times its best being back behind the seat arms stretched for a taller or longer drop where your forced to land front tire first with a slower approach...at least in my experience. Also helpful to put your seat down some for steep down hills with drops haha! Great video great footage!

At first i was confused when he said not to lean back. Im glad Ryan clarified at the 9:15 mark. That really put my mind at ease. You do not LEAN BACK before or while approaching the drop, go over and lean back as your wheel lose contact. Am I getting that right?

The arm thing is always confusing to me. I've gotten a lot better riding in the middle of my bike. So he was saying you still need to push out as you go over the jump. if you're already over the back, then you have no way of making that move. Makes sense to me. Thanks.

So it appears you are using some type of trail/enduro bike. I'd love to see you doing these on an XC bike with no dropper as a lot of us don't have droppers or trail/enduro bikes. While I feel this is a pretty easy one at the beginning, there are some here in upper WI and Upper MI that are pucker worthy for someone like me that does not ever get the opportunity to see until we are there. Pretty much like your second 2.

True, but the same rule applies of not extending your arms *before* you get to the drop. You only extend them to keep your bike in the position you want it to be in as you go over the edge.

So I've seen other vids that say lean back and now I see this, I dont know what to do now
@TheLoamRanger5 жыл бұрын
It’s about timing and speed. If you’re already leaned back *before* you hit the edge of the drop, you’re in trouble if the bike kicks forward. If you stay centered on the bike and then thrust the bike forward *as you roll off the edge* that’ll help keep the bike from pitching forward too much as it rolls off the edge of the drop. Hope that makes sense. The key that we cover in the video is having bent arms and legs as you get to the drop so that you can move your body/bike with the drop. If you’re leaned back before you hit the edge, your arms are already locked out, which is not a good position to be in.
