Excellent work Shogo. These sorts of videos are great for several reasons: they afford a great deal of knowledge about the culture in a way that is both digestible and entertaining. I recommend you make more reactions to such videos; life is stressful enough when addressing societal issues of a given nation, we need to break up the content with such content every-so-often.
@PaleHorseShabuShabu2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the explanations on the two videos they've done so far. If I watched the original video on my own, I wouldn't fully understand what's a joke and what's not, at least not every time, so Shogo and Kazu providing their insight is helpful. Also, I love Tomoko and Harumi laughing in the background.

The Chochin is definitely meant to protect the candle from the wind. But i'm also pretty certain that it is intended to diffuse the light to spread it around. A single candle, while bright will not illuminate very far from the lightsource. But when the paper of the Chochin catches the light from the candle inside, it spreads the light in more directions so it's a better source of illumination.
@rezhaadriantanuharja33892 жыл бұрын
Diffuse the light is correct but because it reduce the intensity of the light, illumination will not be farther than without it, quite the opposite actually. Another reason to use it is to change the color of illumination so it is more attractive e.g. bright red

My assumption about eating those carbohydrate dishes at the end of the meal is probably those items tend to make you feel full and you would be less likely to eat and/or drink more items later. When I go out to eat especially if its for All You Can Eat I tend to avoid eating items like bread, rice, noodles, etc. especially early in the meal.

I have a question on protocol.... If I am a recovering alcoholic, or even just a teetotaler, should I decline the invitation, or is it okay to accept, but then order something like water or soda in place of the beer?
@himawaricopter2 жыл бұрын
Even as the video implies, people who don't drink alcohol still go to these dinner/late night parties for social reasons. And it's okay if you cannot consume alcohol, just explain that and order something else. The idea is that you shouldn't turn down the hospitality and chance to interact with coworkers.

@stephaniemorrissey123 Жыл бұрын
I think for funerals, and to a lesser extent, weddings, the etiquette is determined in part by the religion of the deceased & his/her family. For example, Jews cover mirrors in the homes where people gather after a death, because grieving people should not have to worry about how they look.

I was so sure that the Shogun was the one who doesn't exist today. There are surviving Ninja in Japan today who still study and practice Ninjutsu. In terms of Samurai, while the samurai class is technically abolished, ine could argue that the descendants of samurai families would still be samurai by heritage. But a Shogun I would interpret as more of an official state title, and all of that stuff eventually disappeared since the Meiji restoration.

Surrendering a part of yourself (shoes) to the restaurant also allows the restaurant to charge a polite exit fee.
@SwitchelSweets2 жыл бұрын
You mention that the restaurant will sometimes provide slippers to wear, for example, to go to the restroom. Would it be considered rude for one to bring their own slippers to wear for this sort of occasion? For instance, I have small and oddly shaped feet, and many shoes do not fit me well. I wouldn't want to lose a slipper on my way to the restroom because it was too big or ill-fitting!
