There is a major mis-conception about how to do forward slips among many student pilots - and flight instructors for that matter. Today we dissect the technique and separate the good from the bad so that your forward slips are SAFE and EFFECTIVE!

I’ve found that a little extra speed gives me more rudder so more aileron can be applied, giving me a higher sink. I think there’s a balance between control authority and forward progress defeating the maneuver.

Excellent lesson, had the same issues trying to learn forward slip…don’t need to dive , just maintain the correct approach speed…thx

Short Field landings with obstacle were one of my favorite practice maneuvers in a C150, engine idle (CH=on , Fuel=B), full 40deg flaps, stand on the rudder and look out the side window at the numbers on the runway as you come down what feels like an elevator. Line it up about 20 ft up and all that air trapped under the wings gives you a nice flare and bump to a full stop.

If you slip crossing the controls to the opposite side, what would the pitot read? Also, going that slow at 60, and with "inaccurate" pitot tube readings, as you explained so well, are you concerned with getting too slow without realizing it since your airspeed indicator is now not showing an accurate speed?

Hey John! So in the rv the airspeed readings don’t really vary from side to side because the pitot tube is in the nose of the aircraft. With a more conventional pitot tube though, you will typically see more of an effect from one side to the other. Nothing to really be worried about as far as getting too slow. As long as you keep the nose down you won’t stall and as long as you keep it at the same pitch you had established before putting the slip in, you should maintain a good airspeed without going too fast. 👍

@@NorthwestAeronaut Thanks for your great response. Oh ya, forgot the pitot is in the nose for that plane. P.S. Keep up the great videos. All the best.

Also, the beauty of a slip vs a skid is that the higher wing would stall first. Unless you are pitching up, it’s almost self recovering.

Do you have any RPM in (above idle) on final before your slip? If so, how much? I'm assuming it's like your normal landing where you've pulled power out to almost idle when you were abeam of the numbers or turning on base. New student pilot flying an RV12 ULS I just got 9 (funny, it's the same paint scheme as in your videos but not an SLSA - I named her The Baby Ferrari). Love your videos, would like to see more RV 12 videos. Thanks for all you do for us!

Thanks for the kind words! In a practical sense if you’re high enough to require a slip to get down, you should know by the time you turn final and therefore shouldn’t have any power in. For the purpose of demonstrating a forward slip and purposely staying high, you just want enough power to maintain altitude until you’re ready to do the slip. Let me know if I can be of any more help! 🙌🏻

Great video. I see your approach speed is 60. What would the speed be with an adult passenger? I fly a 12 and my approach when alone in calm winds is about 68-70 in Florida heat. Always looking for that perfect speed with a passenger on board. Thanks for your thoughts. KAPF

Thank you! Those are the speeds I use regardless of loading. I’m always in the plane with another person and is rare I’m solo in it, but this is exactly how I fly it and how I teach my students to fly it. Coming in at 70 is way fast and beyond what the poh recommends. You’ll be eating up a lot of runway by doing that. Especially in the warm Florida weather. So I definitely recommend using 60 as your approach speed :-) 👍

I’ll add a caveat to the above comment, more speed and less flap is appropriate when dealing with a high crosswind component. You’ll get better rudder authority to allow for higher wind correction.

i would think that you would want to be in the highest drag flight speed. obviously the faster you go the more parasitic drag, and the slower you go the more induced drag. 63 is best glide, which is normally right around the lowest drag airspeed you can be at. so continuing at 60 is pretty much the lowest drag you can have. (I would think) Increasing forward speed to your Vf and hold the slip in until you are at the energy you require. I always aimed at the end of the runway and kept the slip in until I was at the correct speed. if you are taking out the slip before you are at your target speed you are just taking it out too early. I'd rather be extremely uncoordinated close to the ground at higher speed than at a lower speed. But I'm not flight instructor nor an expert in the area so Don't take my opinion as fact.

A good reason to put the nose down a bit in a slip: life insurance. If, for whatever reason, you happen to stall at or below pattern altitude in a cross-control situation, you are likely to damage the nose wheel. -Old pilot

This sounds like a horrible plan. Slip it and slow it close to stall speed.

Not sure what you’re talking about. No one said anything about getting close to stall speed. 🤷🏻‍♂️
