If you come to visit or live in Finland, one of the places you have to visit is a Finnish grocery store and in this video I will show and teach you some of the basics on Finnish grocery stores as well as some pro tips you can use to save some money!

Besides kauppahalli also check the market places/squares. They are like farmers' markets. Very fresh vegetables, berries etc. They also open quite early (6-8 am) so if you are an early bird that's for you.

A tip about discount that you didn't said: make the cards. They are free and give you extra discounts. And eggs are always cheaper on Tokimanni (usually cheap warm clothes too). And lidl bottles usually are not returned at k or s markets.

That self-weighing of the produce caused me so much anxiety at first. When I finally went into a Lidell and saw everything was already priced I was so happy. Have you talked about cleaning products at all? In the US you can find products with bleach or ammonia, but in Finland it seemed like there wasn't any that were very strong. Are they mostly natural products?

That is kind of niche-product. I think I've never bought any of those yet. We do have cleaning products here.

It is quite similar here in Los Angeles, except for you don't weigh (there is still a scale if you care) or bag your groceries. Finland doesn't have COSTCO, there is Prisma, but that is like Target. Oh yeah, tomatoes and some other things that are easily outdoor year round grown here can be cheaper in Finland.

K-group has good discounts, especially if you have their plus-card. Otherwise, S-group is much cheaper, and it's cheaper over all. We have Citymarket (K-group) and Prisma (S-group) next to each other, and many items I buy are cheaper in Prisma. Sometimes it's few euros for the bigger items and sometimes just like 20-30 cents cheaper (like certain juices etc. I like), but the normal shelf price is cheaper in S-groups stores in all the items I buy. With fresh fruits and vegetables the difference is not so big tho.

Moved to Vaasa 10 days ago, but just saw this video. In Ukraine we also have to weight vegetables, so it was easy, but when I wen to Lidl couldn't understand what to do there, because there were weights with numbers just to check the weight, but they don't give stickers:) Thank you for the usefull videos:)

Puuilo is my favourite store, much better and cheaper than Tokmanni, Motonet, K-rauta etc. From food stores i prefer S-market, but if i don't need to buy much stuff then i go to K-kauppa. Closest Lidl is 100km away, so i shop at a Lidl only few times in a month.

Reminds me about norway😅 the supermarkets here does also have their own brands and offer some discount cards. Or Rema 1000 case, an app. But heard its not 100% great. In coop, you have coop medlemskap kort and at kiwi, a trumf card. When you use the trumf card, it take a % And save it in a account that you have made to obtain it, you can even link it to your debit card too. I have done that, and have the trumf card in fysical form. In case if have some cash. And those return bottle things, are clever. We does also have those here. I have many times been close to 100NOK each time I returned bottles^^

The K-Citymarket in Jarvenpaa was voted best supermarket in the world. I saw a youtube video on it and it looks luxurious. Maybe, there will be a step up in quality over the supermarkets Americans are used to. Have you spent some time in the U.S., that you can compare and give Americans your opinion about it? I guess if the nuts and candy can be kept fresher, by buying just a little bit, rather than a whole lot and the packaging cost and waste is reduced, it might be a better system.

Aleksi, you forgot to tell them to make sure to bring your own plastic or other shopping bags, otherwise you will have to pay for the stores plastic bags at check out. That sometimes happens to me when I go back to Finland to visit and I forget the first time I go to the grocery store.

No worries, I notice certain things as a Finn and a foreigner while in Finland, as I was born in Finland, however my family moved to the USA when I was a child, so there is no hope for me as I am a stubborn Finn and a loud and obnoxious 'Merican(when I travel to Europe, maybe?!).....I tell my American friends that I am really inherently a quiet and shy person by nature, however they just start laughing.....can you believe that, maybe its the Karelian side of my family and being raised 'Merican, that must be it? Anyway good vlogs, they make me laugh and I learn some good stuff too as I do not live in Finland so I am always trying to get caught up on Finnish sayings, etc., for when I go back every few years. I have to add that I get to laugh at both cultures since I am a hybrid of Finnish and American, its very entertaining when I am kalsarikannit!

Tokmanni is fairly priced, but i don't like their interior stuff (like bed covers, curtains, table cloths, etc). I prefer JYSK (when they have discounts...otherwise its like wtf - why the same shop has higher prices than in Denmark and Latvia), also Prisma and IKEA are quite nice. Important thing about shopping - for booze you have to go to separate shops called Alko. In grocery shops you can only buy beer. In many grocery shops they have a self-service area which usually don't have any ques, because people are apparently afraid of technology or something :D Don't be afraid - its simple and in English :)

Weighing the vegetables sometimes confuses even me, because the notes where the scale numbers and prices are are not always on top of that vegetable, especially for some small veggies, so you might need to know what it is called in finish... good luck with that :D But the finns at the store will help you, even if they don't understand english, they can point you the correct note.

Pretty much exactly like US grocery stores. Except we don’t weigh our own produce and put a sticker on it. Also we’ve done away with bottle deposits, unfortunately. I wish we would bring them back. Everything is too disposable.

Hasan Kamal I think having Finnish subtitle is a better option for his videos cause most of his subscribers are foreigners so it’s impossible to speak mostly Finnish here

Foods in Finland are so expensive! Especially vegetables! 10 times than in China.Soft drinks also are too expensive.
