What we're going to cover right now is a basic technique that you'll find in any Aikido dojo. It's called Iriminage. It literally means an entering throw. We're going to show just a basic start-off, Ai Hanmi Katate Dori, which is a cross handed grab here. Again, like before, I want to blend with my opponent and allow that energy to go. I want to try as hard as I can to avoid the open hand. So, I'm going to move away from the open hand, Tenkan around, lift my partner, and back down.
So, again like in all the core Aikido techniques, my main objective here is to blend and move with my partner. Move behind, drop my weight, and take my partner with me. Lift, and drop.
I want to make sure not to leave my partner behind. I don't want to pull my partner. In aikido you always want to put yourself in a position to push, not pull. Behind my partner, push as you drop your weight, lift and extend, and drop.
Just because we're doing it from this grab doesn't mean this is the only way to do it. You can find Iriminage from almost anywhere. I'll show you that from a couple of different positions. Shomenuchi is very similar movement. Sukui; again, a very similar movement.
As this starts to speed up you'll see that it changes a little bit in terms of Ukimi. So, Shomenuchi. Sukui. Alright.
Iriminage.

not only are these some of (if not THE) easiest to follow Aikido instructionals I've ever found online, it's also one of the best looking dojos I've ever seen. That aged wooden trunk set to form the right wall of the kamiza is just inspired. Everything functional, neat, practical and harmonious, if that doesn't encompass the spirit of Aikido, I don't know what does. If only that random bit of intrusive plumbing on the bottom left of screen could be hidden.

@Learning is fUn doesn't matter. Aikido is way too perfection body and mind. Other martial arts are more effective. If you looking for only fight go to KrafMaGa Tahi box and other. Different styles for difference needs. I praktice Aikido and sometimes practice Tahi box with my friend who is master of Tahi box. In the past I was practice Taekwondo and I will never left Aikido. STREET FIGHT NEVER GIVE YOU SUCH balance and CALM OF YOUR MIND. Therefore everybody can choose what is good for him. Even of you are very good in street fight you have little chance against somebody with gun or knife. Martial arts teaching you how to avoid this situation and how to reach to harmony between your body and mind. But if you want only fight, Aikido is not for you.

As someone who's been practicing Aikido for several years, I find his techniques a little too forceful and less blending. Yes, pushing is better than pulling, but I find that it's better to be next to the person rather than in front or behind because when you push, they will fight back.
@followyourideas
@followyourideas 5 жыл бұрын
Push is actually incorrect too. Don't pull nor push, move. Move the entire body keeping your center. This is called idōryouku.
@namentatic4978

No. If he pulls you, you push him. If he pushes you, you pull him. The technique is depending of your opponent. That's correct in any martial art. And this man needs to blend more, without using force. After two minutes of demonstration, he started to breath hard.

My sensei sometimes refers to it as the "twenty-year throw" since it takes twenty years of practice to master. I've done it seven years-- you don't need to train twenty years to get it to the point where you could do it in standing jujutsu/judo... but it may take a while to really get down.

Uke (the attacker) and ukemi (the art of attacking and protective falling) is generally the under-appreciated role practiced by both training partners. Students tend to feel that the role of uke is lowly "grunt work" they must tolerate so that they can learn the cool aikido technique. But, one of the secrets to learning aikido is thru becoming a totally committed uke; laser focused; Zen-like - mind, body and spirit. It's not just "biding time" till it's your turn to throw somebody.

That would probably be the draw back of a martial art like Aikido. It takes a long time to learn, and and even longer time to master. But, once that time has elapsed, it will be worth it. Again, you need a lot of patience and time for this; don't be discouraged too much. Of course, you can always take something that offers a more practical application immediately like jujitsu, hapkido, etc. Find the "right" martial art for you and your body type (body's ability). Be patient.

Jones sensei knows the difference between katatekosadori and katatedori aihanmi. He knows they are the same thing. If you describe the technique by the relative hand positions of nage/tori and uke, you would call it kosadori, but if you describe it by the relative body positions, you would call it katatedori aihanmi. Just like grabbing the mirror side arm of your partner could be katatedori gyakuhanmi (or as you say, just 'katatedori.'). There is variation in terminology. Depending on what style you practice or where, the person performing the throw may be called nage, tori, or shi'te.

I don't know if anyone is still coming here, but I do have a question. I just started aikido a few months ago so I am by no means an expert, but when it comes to irimi nage my sensei always says not to drop your arm, because then you'll have to bring it back up and if your partner decides to put all his weight on your arm it becomes impossible. The key (he says) is to make use of the fact that he is moving forward to suddenly lift his chin and make him fall backwards (while keeping your other hand at the base of his neck to make sure he doesn't escape). So how does that tie in with how irimi nage is shown in the video?

yes, the static grab is just a way to practice...most of the techniques can be generalized to strikes with no grabs. As you evolve in your practice, you are already in the middle of the technique before your opponent even completes a strike or grab. This is called "timing" and is what gives it almost a mystical feel at very advanced levels.

Well, you are right. I have seen masters fumble on the mat and fall into Jujitsu because they do not know how to deal with people. My first fight was in a crowd and I was terrified to hurt someone. It ended with me doing Ubi waza and throwing the guy down a flight of concrete steps. I have 15 years on you in training. That year I was in well over 500 plus fights. There are a lot of other factors that come into play that aren't taught in a dojo. Hope that helps.

+Oncenplayer If you are looking for a real life fighting experience try MMA. Aikido is not about go out and try to show off about your skills. Now. if you find this beautiful and devastating i can tell you that it is beautiful, developing your mind and your spirit. Look for the nearest Aikido dojo in your city and ask to watch training, you will find it rewarding. Also, if you need to use your skills in real life you could do serious harm. Although sounds weird, Aikido is about peace, not fight anyone else, instead fight yourself trying to be better than yesterday.

Got side tracked...meant to comment on the OP. In training they are viewed as your partner rather than opponent as they are helping you to learn by providing you somebody to practice with. You'll often get much higher grades paired with lower grades. The lower grade gets the benefit of having somebody with more experience to train with while the higher grade gets to practice their teaching skills and has to review their understanding of the technique which improves their aikido too.

There is nothing lolish about that and it is important to differentiate these two grabs. You do understand that, don't you?

you see, this is why i hate google +, you never know who is replying to you, who is replying to someone else in the comment chain. I mean, you do, but its stupid. As for your comment, thank you, you are right, since it is only ai hanmi, gyaku hanmi kosa dori would just be silly idea. It reminds me of a seminar with P. Corallini Sensei when he asked if we would like to see a technique and someone asked if he can show ushiro ryote dori ikyo, but suwari waza :D He kept his cool and just asked someone else, rest of us burst out laughing.

u train form grabbing point to learn how to use his energy.its very hard and imposible to move ur partner if u dont know the techniek.when u know techniek and u know how to move then u can apply in real life situation where someone would push u or try to hit u u can use this techniek and he wil not get up

When you push, Uke can stop graabing your hand and grab one/both your leg(s), your push is to deep. This Irimi nage is impossible with a responsive Uke

I think this is not quite perfect. You dont "lift" your partner in this technique. You turn round until he tries to get up and stretch his move to get up so he loses the balance. If you have to lift him you would have to use much more power which is not neccecary because he has to get up sooner or later
