How to do KEYWORD RESEARCH For a local business // in 5 MINS, NO SEO EXPERIENCE and with FREE TOOLS

Local Keyword research is essential if you are a small business, yet very often overlooked by business owners.
But if you really want to rank in local search results it should be a fundamental aspect of your strategy.
When researching local keywords you should consider many variations of the same words, keywords you haven't thought about, prioritise them based on search volume etc...

So if I am correct, if we have a business that proposes different services, we should have a page for each services on our website so for exemple one page for Carpet Cleaning, another one for Rug cleaning...But then, how many different keywords should we use for each page? Only one for example Carpet Cleaning London? More than one but still with a “good” search volume for exemple Carpet Cleaning London, Carpet Cleaning In London, Carpet Cleaning South London... You should have a primary keyword for each page and consider secondary keywords. For instance, if you are based in London, you should target the following keyword for your carpet cleaning service "carpet cleaning london" because it has the most volume. (add the keyword to your page title and your H1) and within the copy add secondary keywords such as "professional carpet cleaning london" , "deep carpet cleaning london". Do the same for all other services

Hi Frank. thanks for your comment. I am not sure how big Coventry is so if you're able to provide your services through the entire town then I'd advise you target Coventry as a whole and combine it with all your services (boiler repair Coventry, emergency plumber Coventry, central heating Coventry...) It's likely to have more searches than something very local such as plumber Bell Green but bear in mind it will be more competitive and harder to rank for. It will also depend on how strong your current website is (number of links pointing to it) and how optimised it is for the keywords you are targeting

Great tips again! Just looking at your website - I have always wondered this. If your home page targets the main service a company does i.e "carpet cleaning" and you then have a 'services' section = should you include within "services" a page dedicated to "carpet cleaning"? If you do doesn't that cannibalise the home page which is targeting this exact keyword meaning when someone searches "carpet cleaning London" Google doesn't know whether to rank your home page or your internal service page? I hope that makes sense.

Hi Michael, this is a very good question. Here is what i recommend. Your HP is always going to be the page with most authority so it makes sense to use it to target your most competitive KW phrase i.e "carpet cleaning" You can target longer-tailed keyword on the dedicated service page such as "professional carpet cleaning services". check out some of your website's competitors and paste their url in ubbersugest, it will show you what their keywords are so you can target the same

We're acquiring a competitor's business. I am comfortable with what to do on the website side, but do you have any advice for how to handle their GMB? They don't have much going on there, but they have been in business for a long time so he ranks well. As of May, we have jumped into the map pack for a couple of dozen of our top keywords so I don't want to do anything that might harm our position...

It very much depends on your commercial strategy and many other things. I am assuming the business name is going to be changed, this may impact the GMB rankings, do they have a website? if yesm, how much authority does it have, because it will also impact their positions on maps etc... Not as straight forward as it seems

They don't have a strong web presence in terms of content, but they have been around forever so they do have pretty good authority and rank well locally. Website-wise, we plan to leave his site in tact for a period of time for the main page where he will post a letter about the transition. The other pages will be 301'd to the equivalent page on our site. He doesn't have much going on with GMB either. I'm not even sure it's being managed (no website listed, for instance). My goal would be to take it over and make some updates to it. Not sure if should just make the website ours or still have it direct to his site. Basically, we want to keep all of his local juice!

It's not a question of number. Use your keywords in your meta titles and headers and wherever it makes sense for the reader
