My hubby John explains how he takes Rhododendron cuttings, and I've added a clip at the end explaining the best time of day to do this. Thanks for watching.

Great video and good instructions. I am just now getting ready to make cuttings and try to propagate my plants. I will be making videos of what I do to document either my success or failure. OAG

Can you go into more detail as to what a 'growing point' is please? I've just snapped a branch off my established rhododendron, and i am interested in trying to grow from this accident

Hi I have some ericaous compost, pearlite ,rhizopon rooting hormone, root trainers and plastic containers ready to start taking some cuttings. Can you tell me how much water I need to put in with cuttings and how often to water. Thank you for the great info. Jamie.

Great video, Not sure where this video was taken. I live in South Australia and would be very interested in purchasing cutting tubes you had show us. Do you have a suppliers name where I can obtain these from.

Beautiful foliage, is it possible to link charectistics of leafs to flowers? Say broad leafs will give you larger flowers or vice versa?

Hello thank you this was a brilliant video . It's great as you were asking all of the questions I wanted to know? Great minds think alike 😂. May I ask I have a really big rhododendron in my garden (I am brand new to gardening) for 20 years, I've never touched it. Can I take a cutting and grow it in a tubafterv6 months in a plastic box, also can I get a cutting and plant it straight into the ground after 6 months please? Many Thanks Mrs Dodson

Yes, cuttings are best done just after the new leaf growth stops being sticky. Or you can do an air-layer and let the cutting grow on the mother plant. Fill a plastic bag with some peat moss. Saturate it with water and sqeeze it dry, Seal the bag. Wound the parent plant, make a cut in the bag of peat moss and wrap the cut part around the wound. Fasten top and bottom of bag onto stem using hessian string. The peat will stay moist if done correctly, and the plant will root into it from the wound. www.instructables.com/id/Propagating-Plants-by-Air-Layering/

Check out marcottage or air layering on youtube - some really good ones out there. Use a pair of pliers to wound tough bark through the cambian layer

So, after the plants have rooted in that box, it will be nearing winter time, or? What happens then? Can they be repotted in larger pots and left through the winter outside in that same box or in a greenhouse? (I live in Norway and here we have a fairly long winter with short days from November through February). Theoretically I should do the cutting in July. Thanks for an interesting video, btw!

Enjoyed the video. What concentration of copper sulphate do you use to spray the cuttings?
@gardeningandgrowingorchids16884 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's copper oxychlroride (500g/kg) which I use for the fruit trees at 15-25g per 5 litres water. I think that works out at around 0.0025%. In practical terms it's just enough to start to turn the water a very pale turquoise colour.

@@gardeningandgrowingorchids1688 one more question, sorry to be a pain, are the plastic containers sealed or do you have holes drilled to give some aeration?

Hola buenos dias Me gustaria saber por favor cuando puedo hacer la plantación de esquejes vivo en el sur de alicante Gracias
@gardeningandgrowingorchids16884 жыл бұрын
Hello, the time to take cuttings is just as the new growth is turgid and firm, but is still slightly sticky to the touch. Hola, El momento de tomar esquejes es justo cuando el nuevo crecimiento es rígido y firme, pero sigue siendo ligeramente pegajoso al tacto.

the first minute was excellent - short, concise and no waffling - unfortunately wifey decided to make hubby repeat everything at great laborious repetetive detail !! I would like to have known at what temperature the plastic box should be kept in - an appropriate place outsside ? temperature etc night and day - as I live in the UK

How often do you water the cuttings?
@gardeningandgrowingorchids16884 жыл бұрын
They shouldn't need watering, as the box should keep the air moist. You don't want them sitting in water, but the foliage should stay damp so mist if required.

Holes in box for air?
@gardeningandgrowingorchids16884 жыл бұрын
No holes. Although in reality these 'totes' are not totally airtight. The main purpose is to retain humidity. I have the cuttings raised off the base (in root trainer frame or sat on top of gravel or clay pellets) to prevent them sitting in water. I think there is plenty of air in the box for respiration.
