So Rew helps with 1. Speaker placement 2. Acoustic treatments for flattening the curve 3. Purchasing subs when the dip is too great. 4. Change the crossover point on receiver. 5.Help with flattening with calibration if you have a 1/3 octave eq or better. (Which I don’t). What it’s not is: a auto flattening system that creates a curve for your receiver, like audessy? And I know it also has its problems. I just am looking for this to autocorrect what I cannot change... will it do that?

If you mention something, anything, explain it to us. You glosss over settings like we know what they mean.... we do not know, tahts why we are here. Content looked good and well paced. Unfortunately, I just couldn't watch more than a few mins before the music was just too much. Certainly couldn't make it to 33 mins. One of the greatest mysteries known to mankind is why people still think a music track is of any benefit to an instructional video at all, let alone a completely inapropriate 'happy' song that stays at one, too loud level all the way through. When KZbin began it could just about be forgiven but with so many similar comments over thousands of videos, you would have expected most people to have learnt that music serves NO purpouse other than to ruin videos.

hi Matthew, thanks for the video. It seems so many have forgotten the purpose of warble tone generators rather that a steady sine wave sweep. Some of the effects in your video may not be real if a warble tone sweep was done. I am sure you are familiar with them (warble tones) and their purpose. Even pink noise has its down side. Any ideas why we can not select warble 1/2, 1/3 octave, etc? thanks to Room Equalizer Wizard also!!! looking forward to your reply. Cheers

@@AH-wr1ir It always amazes me how Cambridge scholars such as yourself have the time to correct all of us grammatically incorrect youtubers. What is even more comical, you still didn't have anything to add about the topic at hand. If you don't already have one, you should think about starting a channel about grammar. Finally, I don't think you are correct on use of "First" in the beginning of the sentence. It's not a requirement or minimum to say "second" when you begin a sentence with first. You can argue that till you are blue in the face and I still wouldn't care. Now please, if you have something of value to add to this topic of audio correction, please do share this information.

Ok, Ill try to give a couple. IN settings, you dont really explain certain things. For example, why are you doing L/R and sub sweeps only? In a 7.1 system, are we only doing 2.1 channel sweeps? You have it set at -22db, why is it at that setting? Should we always use that setting? Why do you choose 1/6 smooting vs other options? You obviously chose 1/6 for a reason.... why? I could continue on, but I think you get the point. This is not meant to be a criticism, but more of an admission to my lack of understanding on how to use REW. I want to be able to use and understand it, not just follow a few steps I watched someone do on a video. I greatly appreciate the time you and others have taken to try and help many of use newbies.

The background music wasn’t that far in the background and it was quite loud and distracting. Also when you are talking about what parameters you are using or are going to use we, the viewer can’t see immediately where your cursor is at on the screen because it’s a small arrow on a white screen with dozens of black lines/boxes and type. It would be helpful if you said where the cursor is like “if you look at the top left side in this box that is titled …”. That way we can see what you are going to click on before you do it and move the cursor again.

You breezed right through, “And I connect my laptop to my Onkyo receiver and choose it as my output device from the drop-down menu.” = = Two hours later after determining that MY Onkyo receiver wasn’t recognized by Windows 10; I had downloaded files for my Oppo BDP-105D over the internet and chosen the correct input for it. Took six measurements, biggest anomaly was crossover between subwoofer and mains: Big hole from 30 to 40 Hz.

i raul I have something planned that should address this. Now that the weather is nice we will start measuring speakers again and I plan to video the process and create a video of what we are doing. Just a heads up, what we do is a very by the books approach and as such, hard to replicate without spending some time building your own measurement rig. James Larson takes his work very seriously and built large custom rigs to measure speakers without much diffraction or reflections from the rig. Still, it will show how we do it and what it takes to get good measurements. This won’t be done for a few months however.

One doesn't NEED to use any specific software or measurement tool to achieve this,.a RadioShack sound level meter n test tone disc even works fine! That n lots of positioning trial n error n listening, measuring, listening, measuring, moving, yards yada. Never let anyone convince you you need specific latest n greatest measuring gear to get this stuff right! .. experience? Yes!

"You can use a mix of sealed and ported". Oh, thank god, because I have sealed and open panel! :-) /S On a more serious note, is it worth throwing out the severe outliers like the one you show far below the other curves with the flatter inflection points? This obviously assumes that those were generated with the sub/listening placement outside the norms, rather than at the primary listening position. I found the comment you made about multiple subs very interesting. Does it seem to be enhanced (improved) running L+R over separated stereo, or vise versa? Assuming...assuming...asssuming... Yeah, damned non ideal equations. I was in an empty living room once with plaster walls, and I can tell you for a fact that they are MUCH more reflective than drywall. You could clap (an impulse) and hear about 10 or more reflections damping down VERY slowly compared to an empty drywall enclosed room. I suspect this comes not only from the stiffness of the plaster surface directly but also the increased stiffening of the entire comparative wall due to the skins stiffening the overall stud/plaster wall. Also, why would you EVER want a room that is a perfect cube, sounds like the perfect storm for 3D temporally extended room axes excitation? I'm saying this just on personal impression, not actual measurements. Also I expect large panel speakers like mine (Maggies) do not excite the vertical axis nearly as much as a point source, just know a bit of physics (dangerous, I realize). Good vid, thanks. "How it works and how livable it is" Uncommitted half-heartedness, I say! :-/ :-) (kiddingly) Measured delay on the subs also seems reasonable considering the mass involved in a sub driver, especially a sub like my Velodyne (4 hz resonant IIRC), even considering the massively powerful 'motor' compared to say an electrostatic, or even a much smaller much higher resonance more standard cone driver. Also keep in mind that there are MANY more kinds of distortion than just THD, and that IIRC, odd harmonic distortions are much worse than the evens, from a pyschoacoustic standpoint. Could be full of **** on all of this, but it is my subjective experience, ear wise. "The sound that you hear in the room is more the room than the speaker itself". Uh huh, that must be why my sub sounds SO much better than pretty much all the others I've heard, at least at that price point (I certainly haven't heard them all, BTW). I get what you are saying, though. And yes, placement is CRITICAL. On a more humorous note, I had a 'golden eared' technician from one of the retailers come out to set up a brand new delivered set of speakers (a standard service of this particular retailer on more expensive speakers) and when he was done and satisfied I informed him that the tweeter was not operating on one side. And I don't remotely claim to be 'golden eared'. Audioholics is a superb business name, BTW. :-) Also let me qualify all the above by saying my knowledge in this area is minuscule compared to yours, so I'm not seriously challenging anything you say. Cheers. PS, for anyone actually having read this far, the GIK vid is another one I've seen that seems to be useful, although it is a bit more of a commercial.

Just play pink noise through your PA system, or whatever speakers you are using...hopefully they're halfway decent. Record the response then make the necessary adjustments using your graphic EQ to make the room as flat as possible. Now you have essentially taken the 'room' out of the equation and can begin mixing your band. :)

I have avr at 0db, signal from rew at -30 db and my 20-500 sweep starts at 90db then falls linearly down to 70db at 100hz, then +/- around 70db to 500hz. Do I have this setup correct to be getting these readings?

Hey this might sound like a stupid question but if I have Mac Book Pro and a Apple TV could I use airplay to do this instead of HDMI? Or would this create an issue. Apple hates ports so I was hoping I don't have to by another dongle.

Ive been trying to find anyone to tell me how to set up the loopback feature to calibrate soundcard... but if its java and not asio, as my UFX II RME is running asio, then how is java more (reliable)? I cant route this mic into my setup properly. Another musician attempts engineering.

People say avoid using the Audyssey mic for measurements bla bla bla. But it is a full range mic so can cover the entire freq range Audyssey corrects for (5-20k?), so no problems there. Does the lack of calibration file really matter if youre using the same mic for all positions, and purely to manually set the sub crossover point? (which Audyssey/AVR often screws up).

Sigh....I just want to know how the changes you make with "rew" are implemented into your avr? I have a denon avr. When you make changes to the frequency curves with "rew" connected to your avr thru a hdmi cable does it automatically change the Eq settings in the internal EQ of your avr?....please anyone????? I'm litterly at the point of begging at this point!...lol!!
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 5 жыл бұрын
What? REW is measuring the acoustical response in your room of the changes you are making to your system. When you alter the EQ, delay, level, phase, etc through your receiver and on your subs, you measure those changes with REW. The ONLY way REW can EVER make changes to your system is if you're using a room correction system like DIRAC or mDSP but that goes beyond the scope of this video. REW is being used as a measurement device here, NOT as a device to implement corrections to your system.

@@Audioholics well thank you so much for clearing this up! But,as a "nubie" you kinda get the impression by watching yours and several other videos on "rew" that it corrects speaker issues. The videos are excellent in the sense they show how to read frequency graphs an so on. But not one video has shown the viewer how to use the info given by "rew" to change settings on an amp or avr or even how to change settings to correct particular issues one might have in a given room. It's awesome to be able to see how a speaker is performing but just knowing a speakers performance curve without being able to correct anything in my opinion is kinda worthless.thank you again for clarifying this issue! I now understand I need to purchase a "dsp" to be able to correct the the frequency response my speakers have in my room. I will say it would be nice to see a video on how to properly change the settings in an avr to change or "correct" any issues in a given room. Its something that is lacking in any video I have seen myself on KZbin and I'm sure by reading several other comments that I'm not the only one who is a little confused on what to do with the info "rew" gives you tou implement correction to a room. Thank you for your time!
