I’ve been prepping for a year and still struggle to soft edge. Watching you just do it shows you know what you’re doing. Always lovely to see a master of their craft.

Mate, this is genius, seriously. I've had a bad scratch on the bumper and got quoted an extortionate amount by a garage, so decided to fix it myself. But I just couldnt get it right because each time there'll be a visible paint line between the old and the new paint. This technique of softening the edges, especially folding the paper backwards, did the job. Its now fully blended in and I'm really happy with it. Top hack! Much appreciated.

Howdy from Texas buddy. Very nice tip! I already have magnets, but using them a bit differently. I like how you use them to position the paper before tape.

Thank you so much for the great insight. I plan to use these techniques this weekend on my van. The only question I have is if I roll back the soft edge a little bit each time when I transition from base paint, to clear coat, to final blending coat (melt coat)? Chris, Richmond, Virginia

Thanks for sharing your tips with us amateurs, I'm just about to have a go at repairing and painting some plastic trim on my car and these masking tips are just what I was looking for. Just one question, I assume you spray away from the tape so you don't spray directly under the soft edge. Once again, thanks for your time.

@CalvinThomas05

Hi fordmad. Yes it works well around door shuts etc. On a normal panel blow in I use a similar technique just with a bigger fold for the laquer to blow behind then demask the blow in area while the laquer is wet and then blow some thinners carefully across the blow in line to blend. Hope this bit of info helps. Cheers Calvin
