Hmm, never really considered this, but makes sense. The dolphin kick is considerably stronger than the flutter kick, and getting that last one or two in would help.

I’ve always been doing this. Didn’t know Dressel copied my style.. oh well.. Jokes aside, I didn’t know it was this powerful. I’ve just done it because it felt good haha now I will give it more thought and maybe I can master it in a few years since I have such a headstart. Good video as always, thanks!

Yeah I’ve found if you really focus in on the timing you can take it to the next level pretty easily, especially for you with a head start

I was just watching that 2016 footage over and over and over last night.... I guess since Gary Hall had mentioned it in a recent stream. One thing I noticed was how Adrian separated his hands on the breakout (likely because he strokes his left hand first) and what I saw was that when he does this, a gap opened up between his shoulder and head. You don't see this with Dressel's breakout. I'm mentioning this because I DO see it very clearly in your breakout as presented in this video. Not positive it's a problem, but thought I'd mention if you want to evaluate for yourself.
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting you mention that. I always love getting tips so I’ll have to take a look at the video, it definitely sounds like I have some room to improve there and when I think about it I can kinda see how the way I usually do it creates extra drag…

Hi derek, one thing i noticed with this breakout is that my kick often surfaces after my arms, which ive noticed has compromised some speed, but i dont know whether a traditional breakout with kick surfacing first setting some momentum is better or this one, especially from a dive.
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas Жыл бұрын
I have this problem as well! The key is adjusting body angle in the water as you set up the break out. (Lift up the legs)

Hi Derek Ive been doing a butterfly kick with my freestyle break out for quite awhile, but i notice when i watched this video that I do it differently. I do a down kick when starting to pull rather than an up kick then a down kick. Is there a big difference in speed? Should I try to change this?
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas Жыл бұрын
Hmm I’ve been reading this comment and I guess I’m not quite sure what you mean here. Wouldn’t an up kick be required for a down kick?
@KcCake
@KcCake Жыл бұрын
@@DerekMaas Maybe a little hard to explain without a video but ill try So normal underwater dolphin kicks but when I start my breakout stroke i kick down and as my stroke reaches the end i start freestyle kicking Vs when caeleb does it, when his breakout stroke starts he kicks upwards and when he finishes his stroke he kicks downwards If that still doesnt make sense i can try dming you with a video or smthn
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas Жыл бұрын
@@KcCake ohh I know what you mean now. I would have to see a video but in theory I could imagine your breakout being similarly effective.

@@DerekMaas ok thanks! Its just always felt more natural with a down kick to start the breakout stroke for me but I notice I get higher out of the water rather than forward

I thought it was pretty weird when he swam the 100 free taking a breath every stroke at the Olympics, has he always done that?
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but then he takes no breath the last 12.5 so breathing every stroke kind of helps him save the air for the end of the race which is an interesting strategy.

Sorry, but you’re doing it wrong, and teaching it wrong. The kick needs to terminate the same time as the stroke, meaning you need to initiate the catch on the back-kick. The best way to train this is by simply having the swimmer do a butterfly breakout with 1 arm.
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting you mention this. I believe I mentioned something similar in the video. However, this video is more about teaching the motion than the timing, which could be a whole separate 10 minute video 😁
@ZioFit
@ZioFit 3 жыл бұрын
@@DerekMaas perhaps, but you aren’t doing it, and teaching it by having a swimmer do free w/dolphin kick trains them to kick on the entry, which is not appropriate for the skill.
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZioFit I understand where you’re coming from. For other viewers - this can be visualized if you pause the vid at 1:06 and 3:00. Notice how the breakouts are similar - there is a slight difference that comes between doing the breakout off of the start vs push, but ZioFIT is right that I could definitely up the kick timing a bit (there are always things we can improve on). As for free w dolphin kick, it’s much more to get swimmers used to the motion as opposed to the timing. The majority of swimmers have never done the free with flutter motion in the first place, which is an important skill to learn. Again - I eventually would like to make a different video on “how to perfect the breakout” as opposed to “how to do” it, but that is for another day. @ZioFIT Elite What drills/progressions would you use to teach this breakout, and more specifically the timing?
@DerekMaas
@DerekMaas 3 жыл бұрын
I’m always learning; I’d love to see videos of you doing this breakout or related drill progressions if you can get some!
