Hey Mikael, it's ok if your lip moves a little, but most of the movement should be in your tongue. Your tongue gives you way more control, and the sound is more natural.

(without vibrato...) At about 8:02, you say, "higher notes are easier to do because your tongue is already pretty high". I notice when I sing a note, I lift my tongue naturally in order to create that sung pitch. Is that what you're doing with your tongue when you key a pitch and blow? ... just without the vocal chords vibrating (unless you're doing a growl, I mean). Is this right?... 1. Think the pitch. 2. Key it. 3. Pretend to sing it (without vibrating the vocal chords but just to get the tongue in place). 4. Blow. Is that right? (If I'm on the right track, I'll try these steps just to get my tongue moving, but I might need a Skype lesson after years as a Classical player. ;) Thanks again.
@hyun64905 жыл бұрын
jaykay1053 He made a video on this concept before, but I forget what it’s called. But to sum it up, pay attention to your tongue position when you say “eeeeee”. That tongue position should be similar when you play high notes, and should get higher and higher and point slightly foward as you play higher notes.

Very interesting, Scott! I’m a retired H.S. band director and professional saxophonist, classically and jazz trained in the 60’s and 70’s. All the legendary classical pro’s, including Hemke, Teal, Sinta and Rousseau (and all the instructors I’ve ever encountered) advocated for “jaw” vibrato. And, as far as I have seen, all the current KZbin sax instructors (Jay, Nigel, Jamie, Dr. Wally, etc), except for you, follow that same trend. Though I admit that you produce a very fine vibrato using the “tongue” technique, I’m just wondering - if it works so well, why does it appear that you are the only one teaching it? Have multiple generations of sax players been taught wrong?
@ScottPaddock2 жыл бұрын
I was taught this technique by Chris Vadala in my 20s and have used it ever since. In this video, I should have been a little less "this is the right way and that is the wrong way" but I was early on in making KZbin videos at the point I made this video. I should have emphasized that there is more than one way to do vibrato and this is the way I teach it. From my perspective, chewing on the reed is not the best and most efficient way to create a great-sounding vibrato. Using your tongue to control the airflow gives you a lot more control. Try whistling and adding vibrato to it with your tongue and then with your jaw and it becomes very apparent which way works better. The way I do vibrato my airspeed never slows down or speeds up. The airstream remains constant. However, If the jaw vibrato is working for you and feels better - stick with it! Also, I have never had to use a mouthpiece patch, because I'm not constantly changing the bite pressure on the mp.
@jazztime42 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Scott, for taking the time on such a thorough and speedy response to my inquiry. I’ve followed the principles of the finest players and teachers during my whole 65-year saxophone career, never wavering(lol) from the “jaw” vibrato technique simply because it worked. But options are good things and I would encourage all serious learners to experiment with both techniques, and if the tongue approach is easier and more effective, then go for it. BTW, in my case, age has brought on some degree of jaw stiffness (possibly TMJ?) and it might be a good time to try a different approach. We’ll see what happens!

Hey one question. when you are doing the doyoyo shape with your tongue. does the tip of your tongue need to still stay at the bottom on your teeth or does the whole tongue move back and forth?
@ScottPaddock4 жыл бұрын
Yes, keep it down in the nook, but it will move around a little, but it shouldn't reach your teeth.
@benjameek4 жыл бұрын
@@ScottPaddock Hey thank you. Im still having a little trouble with embouchure in general. I tried moving the tongue in that shape but no vibrato even when overdoing it. But if i move my jaw a little in a doyoy shape vibrato works. Also I find your recommended position with the lip rolled further out easier than the beginner shape of the lip tightly over the bottom teeth.
@petersnowden13325 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott! Another great video, just stuck on a couple of things. First, how do I make my vibrato sound more even and less lurching? Should I be practicing with a metronome? Second, I've recently adopted a new embouchre as described in 'BIG FAT SAXOPHONE TONE TUTORIAL'. While in general this has improved my sound, I find it hard to keep this up while practicing vibrato without it squeaking constantly. Any tips to help rectify this?
@ScottPaddock5 жыл бұрын
If it sounds choppy (lurching) you might be moving your tongue down too far. It shouldn't be a big dip, just a little wave. I never have students practice vibrato with a metronome, it shouldn't be in time, it should be floating above. Embouchure - you might have your lip rolled out a little too much that can definitely cause squeaks.

I noticed that you are the only teacher on You Tube that advices tongue vibrato! All the others advice jaw vibrato. how do you look at that?
@ScottPaddock3 жыл бұрын
I think the rest of them must have very tired jaws 😂😅🤣 Seriously though, I would never advise anybody to chew on their mouthpiece, which is essentially what jaw vibrato is. It causes the wavy sound by opening and closing the reed. As opposed to using your tongue where you will have a lot more control over the air flow.
@kevave543 жыл бұрын
@@ScottPaddock Oke. I am afraid that I learned the vibrato years ago by myself, no teacher involved. So I tried the tongue vibrato, just to check it out. It looks like it doesn't work for me. I will try again, but for the moment I prefer the way I used to make the vibrato. Greetings from Holland.

Hey Edgar. Practice it for 2 minutes a day over the next week and you'll get it. Then start adding it to your songs on the longer notes. Once you figure out how to do it, and get it pretty smooth it will easily become a natural part of your playing. You can definitely do it in a month!

@ScottPaddock6 жыл бұрын
Definitely use your tongue. Your jaw will move a little bit, but the majority of the movement should be in your tongue saying the word "doy-oy-oy-oy"
@darrenmorales38855 жыл бұрын
Your jaw contains the strongest muscle in your body. Your tongue is the 3rd. However your tongue gets very tired. Why else do you think we created double tonguing fir fast passages rather than to train to move the tongue faster? It’s less efficient
@aaronjones16663 жыл бұрын
I wonder if this would translate as a good tonguing exercise..?
