Thank you for this! Superb explanation of dodging and burning using different tools. I have the TK panel and haven't used much and you've just showed the superiority of using the correct tool for the job.

I believe that the same effect can be achieved by using the Apply Image feature that is embedded directly in Photoshop. It is easy to target highlights, midtones and shadows with it in combination with Levels on the layer mask.

I'm not too familiar with the apply image tool, currently I just use it to do exposure blending, I will take a closer look at it, thanks for mentioning this
