How to Dogfight Aggressively in the P-51 Mustang (War Thunder - Air RB Tutorial Guide)

The P-51 Mustang is often considered a pure BnZ fighter in War Thunder - it has excellent energy retention, top speed, and dive performance. Because of its rather poor turn-rate and handling in-game, dogfighting in the P-51 is generally considered a bad idea - but that's not always the case.
There are situations and tactics where the P-51 can not only hold its own against more maneuverable fighters, but turn the tables and defeat them. This video highlights some situations where the P-51 can dogfight vs. Yaks, J2Ms, Ki-84s, and more.
To be specific: the P-51 excels at high-speed maneuvering over ~420 kph, snap-rolls, and overshoots using rolling-scissors. The combat flaps are incredibly sturdy and can be used to tighten the turn-rate at high-speed to temporarily out-turn much more maneuverable fighters. The Takeoff/Landing flaps should be used at lower speeds during loops/stall-fights to improve the plane's poor turn-rate. Utilizing God's G (the increased turning ability of planes at the top half of loops when pulling down) while the enemy is doing a Split-S in a scissors-fight can also allow the P-51 to hold the edge.
Although I would have to conclude from 10+ years of War Thunder experience that the P-51 is not suited well for dogfighting (its low speed handling is simply too sluggish,) it is certainly capable of it in the right conditions.

Amazing, i love the P51s (C10/N-11 being my faves). Yet US teams are so hard to tame, theyre so fucking inept. Atleast the other benchmark fighters like the 109's, Yaks and spits are by far easier to use.

I also have a trick with the extra buttons in my mouse, a quick keybind and i change my control mode to something like a joystick, helps a bit with BIG chandeliers or high speed turns. Though may take getting used to and its probably a gimmick.

Brother - I just sat for 22min with my mouth agape. This should be required viewing for anyone that unlocks the P-51D. I literally suck at them and after playing pretty much 2 straight years of Air RB (and am a pretty decent pilot - I thought) this has been one of the most informative videos I've ever seen. I saw so many mistakes I've been making with the P-51Ds. Wow. Mind blown.

It's the best WT guide I've ever seen! Lots of advanced, very useful info, good examples and music. (but sometimes you shoot too long bursts, even after the enemy already passed your reticle)

14:51 this is very true, i tried to add some info here, when u are in the P-51 your first and 2nd turn will decide the outcome, if you managed to do good at it, the rest just about cleaning up

Nostalgia kicking in, in the beginning there were close 1 on 1 dogfights spread all across the maps in almost every match. Now everyone just wants RP so we get clustermatings in the middle of the map.

so key points: - only bother shooting from decent range - it's okay to spray and pray - chip damage goes a long way - tap elevator to reverse in a long range chase - skidding head-ons - take the first one-circle if enemy lower alt (and isn't zoom climbing) also i find it hard to do rudder rolls with the default so I swapped Q and E so it becomes Q+D and A+E
