Just starting out kalkwasser in your top off container is likely the easiest way for a low demanding tank.. however, i would suggest many convert to 2 part as they start a mixed reef tank or once the tank becomes heavily stocked with corals

Thank you for the great video. I'm Looking into setting a system up like this. I have a red sea max e170 with a rear sump. It doesn't have a traditional sump in the cabinet. So the exit port lines run back up into the rear sump? I'm just wounding how that would work. Seems like for a small amount the pump would push though the line...most would get held up in the line.

I havent started dosing yet because my tank is brand new and I dont have any lps yet, just a few zoa frags and mushrooms. Question , If I have nothing using up say calcium, will it get too high in my tank and will I somehow need to lower? I am doing a 20% water change in my 55 gal every week right now. Hi. I have a 8 months old reef tank, I’m started getting Corals around 3 months ago and I got a bunch in last 2 weeks. I’ve had tested for the last 3 days to see if I have to start dosing since my Kh is always been low but my Ca is alway stable at 480 ppm. My Kh started at 7.8 and after 3 days it’s at 7.4. My Ca still the same. Can only dose Fusion 2? Or I’ll have to dose the same amount of Fusion 1 even tho my Ca is ok?

Thanks for this. I am considering my first pump. I recently had to compress a 36 bowfront reef into a 20 long due to caulk failure. Can you use SeaChem crystal substance dissolved in RODI, with a dosing pump, or will it precipitate out into the holding bottle over time? Do you need a sump to pump into? I no longer use one and don't want the pump above my tank, but under the stand. Or, can you simply dose kalkwasser?

Im not sure what SeaChem crystal substance but yes you can dose directly to the tank, just do it in a high flow area or ideally break it up into many small does. Adding Kalk to your auto top off may be an easier solution if your tank isnt packed full of corals.

You need to introduce a source of coraline but either will work to supplement it

Yes you include the sump and attempt to subtract the rock/sand space.. Ex the tank is 20g but its prob closer to 18g of water if subtract what the rock displaces.

MJ Slemmer ideally you want to dose them at different times. A small dose say 15 min. A larger dose 30-50 min. I believe I had mine to dose alk on the hour and calcium on the 30min/half hour mark. Magnesium you can dose when ever

ReefDudes now that you mention NoPox, am dealing with a nitrate bloom, am doing 30 gallons water change almost every day, I put algae in the sump with a light and I have two pure marine blocks for almost four months and I can bring this damn thing to close to zero a, about to use NoPox, what is your recommendation?

I haven’t actually used nopox specifically (but it’s essentially carbon dosing and I have tried that with vodka). Two things. If it requires phosphates to work so if they are 0.. no go! Secondly you need to go extremely slow if you start. You are essentially feeding the denitrifying bacteria and you want to start with a tiny dose and slowly work it up over many weeks. This all being said do you have high nitrates? Is it just cloudy water? May just be a bacteria bloom which generally go away on their own

One thing that every single video skips is calibrating for tube length . If I need to dose 2ml but inside of the tube I’ll have 20ml by the time it reaches the aquarium, what is the proper procedure?

great video! subscribed! but 24 hours is a little too frequent to determine changes, especially with the margin of error in testing, probably testing every 48-72 hours, over a week or two would be much more accurate before making changes to dosing amount. oh and the RS calcium and alkalinity isn't balanced at a 1:1 ratio, i believe people have figured it to be about 1 part calcium to 3 part alkalinity to maintain both levels without one of the parameters running amok lol

Are you using the plastic or glass Voss bottles?? I'm planning to use the larger glass bottles. I ask because plastic bottles begin to break down over time and if the Voss plastic bottles are no different from the typical plastic water bottles they may begin to leach chemicals into your tank.

Linemen Reefer generally you want it to be balanced however many established tanks like ,y large reef tank more alkalinity than calcium. I for instance i dose about 5ml more alk tha. cA. But keep an eye on magnesium as if it’s out of whack it will throw off the balance of Ca and Alk

You want to wait Atleast 15 minutes from dosing one to dosing the other so they don’t precipitate out. I dose alkalinity at night as it boosts PH as acalcium in the day on my big tank :)

Yes, i break the dose up throught the day.. ex if it was 24ml i may does 2ml per hour for 12 hours. I tend to dose alk at night to balance out PH and CA in the day.. Make sure you wait atleast 15 min between dosing CA / Alk so they dont precipitate.

Pam Konen correct. Mag doesn’t not get consumed as fast. I would start with checking alk. Wait 24h. Check again then if your using a equal part dosing system. Set them all the the dose you calculated off alk. Wait 24h check again and see if your dose kept it at the same level. After a few days of checking you should get it dialed in then can check weekly to verify it’s still dossing the correct amount

For alkalinity hanna checker amzn.to/2lgvaV3 I check that weekly (try to) and test the rest every few weeks.. this works once stable if your dosing equal parts. If a test and its not what i expect ill test the rest... if its what i expect then i dont bother test the rest as often :)

If you have some money to burn there is a number of automated testers that are now coming out into the market.. but they are not cheap.. most tend to be in the 800-1000 ish range
