If you are experiencing the "99% failed to install" message when trying to perform the HP driver install connecting this printer by USB cable then there is a simple fix to resolve this. It is not your USB cable nor is it a Windows driver issue. By HP's infinite wisdom there is a setting on the printer itself that needs to be modified before the driver installation can be successful. This setting can be found by locating 'Smart Install' in the config settings using the LCD panel. Change this to 'No' and your driver installation will now work. I am getting this error. Following your suggestion, there is nothing stating 'config settings' and there is no 'smart install' choice using the LCD panel. Please provide the complete path to find this.

@@t.sobressairb.1096 My printer was an HP MFP M127fn. To find that setting on this model click on the Wrench icon (on the printer) to get you into the config menu. Using the arrow keys go to Service press OK. Using arrows keys again go to Smart Install press OK. Change to Off then OK. Power off printer. Perform installation with HP installer software. (Available from HP's website) Power on printer and connect USB when requested. I was using Windows 10 when I did this. I have since upgraded to Windows 11 and now using the network port instead of USB. Windows 11 did not see this printer when trying to connect via USB. This printer came out in 2013.
