I’ve watched like 30+ videos on rev matching and this was by far the best instructional video in terms of explaining and actually seeing it in effect. All the other video creators have dark gloves and i’m not able to tell wether or not they’re pushing up or pushing down on the throttle. Preciate the video man. Makes sense. I've been trying to figure out downshifting because i do it too slowly while rev matching. I usually try to rev match all the way into 1st gear and apparently that was my mistake. I'm supposed to just downshift into 2nd until i come up to a stop and then pop it into 1st right before i fully stop. If i'm understanding correctly and that 1st gear is just for taking off or kinda putting around in a parking lot etc.
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 2 жыл бұрын
Ya you never really downshift into 1st coming to a stop. But if you come to a parking lot or a place where you want to put around slow you definitely can downshift to 1st and continue on your way

This video probably explained it the best. I say probably because I don't fully understand it but felt most informed by this video. What I got from this video is the following: IF YOU WANT TO DOWNSHIFT: 1. Clutch IN 2. Rev to add 2k-3k rpm 3. Downshift 4. Ease out clutch 4a. AT FRICTION ZONE get back on the throttle 5. Stay on throttle until clutch is out, and hold. Done. YES?

I am good at shifting in my sport car, going up hill or stop at up hill. I would like to see a video of how you tackle going up hill from a stop with steep slop on a bike.
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 3 жыл бұрын
Same as car, let go of clutch till you feel it start to catch and then let go of brakes and apply throttle and go. But with my bike it has a throttle assist at start so you don’t really have to apply throttle in parking lots and at slow speeds so it would be very easy on my bike you would t even have to use the method I mentioned just let go of brake and let go of clutch slowly and you’re off
@jbean530
@jbean530 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been practicing this in the parking lot. They have a stop at a slope in the parking lot. Going from a stop to a sharp right turn is tricky. First time I went over the yellow line so I kept repeating until I didn’t go over the yellow line. Since, if a car was there, I would have crashed. I keep the right foot on the rear brake and let the clutch out really slow. Give more throttle, but let that last part of clutch out very slowly. Then, let up the rear brake when you move forward. Hills are tricky. Good thing I drove a manual car many years ago.

The video makes sense and i understand the method, my only question is i thought when the clutch is engaged the throttle should be off, and the way im understanding this is youre engaging the clutch while flicking the throttle at the same time. Is that correct ?
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 2 жыл бұрын
Yes because you want to bring the rpm up for the lower gear to go in smooth. If you don’t blip the throttle you’ll get a jerk when downshifting and possibly lock up the back tire momentarily or make it start skipping
@piewwwwww
@piewwwwww 4 ай бұрын
Good video! The info i was actually RPM wise..people always say blip it just a little..but how much is a little🤣 glad to know it has to be 2-3k above where your actually at. Cant wait to try it. Lets say the throttle is 50% open at ehmm 6000rpm 6th gear at 100km/hr.. You would close the throttle blip it a little more than 50 % open( since 50% before = 6000rpm) to be able to bring those rpm to 8-9k range correct?
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 4 ай бұрын
No because once you drop the clutch in, you don’t need to give as much gas because you’re not underload. The engine is just in neutral basically so you don’t even need to give it up to 50% to you just give it a little bit the best way I can tell you is to go out and practice the more you do the better you’ll get.

Theres something I didnt get maybe because of the language barrier 1: pull the clutch 2: downshift 3: pull the throttle a little 4: release clutch In step 3, do you release throttle before releasing the clutch or you're holding the throttle before releasing the clutch?
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG Жыл бұрын
You go it right but you only blip the throttle meaning you give it enough throttle to bring the rpm up and yes you do it at the same time you are holding in clutch. But you don’t stay on throttle just twist and let go. Once the rpm drops that’s when you release clutch to catch the gear at the right speed

@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 3 жыл бұрын
Ya you might be letting the clutch out too soon. Try to let it out smoother and let the clutch catch the RPM at the point where it engages normally. To find out where it engages just sit on the bike with engine off and in gear then roll it back and forth while releasing the clutch to see when it bites. That’s where you want to get the clutch to when downshifting and let it engage before releasing all the way so you don’t get that jerky motion. Just let the rpms drop as you release and when it engages release all the way. You can see in my downshifts you can get it down to one single motion with practice

When braking for a tight turn do you brake then downshift , downshift then brake, or do it simultaneously? How far out from a tight turn do you use brake n downshifting?
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 2 жыл бұрын
I downshift and then if I’m not at the speed I want to be for that turn then I apply brakes. Just makes sure once you’re in the turn you never use front brakes or it will throw the bike off balance, if you have to slow down during a turn use your rear brakes only. As for when to start to slow down it all depends on the road, your speed, how tight the turn is, the angle of the road and so on. There’s too many factors for me to give you an answer with a set distance like 100 meters or something like that.

Hi Mike... thanks your video is very informative. I'm a 57 yr old going through a midlife crisis, well according to my long suffering wife 😁. I took my (CBT) back in 1991 but regretfully did not follow it up. so now have taken it again but now with the added Theory Test which i didn't have to do back then. I have until August 21 to complete my full licence and with all this covid crap have not been able carry out any training i have only had a couple of days on a 125cc motorcycle and literally 20 mins on a Honda CB500F to see if i could handle a bigger bike . I have been watching hours of videos on techniques and tips (yours included) and my goal is to hopefully obtain my licence and take to the road on an SV650, i just need to gain confidence and learn the skills to pass peticularly my slow speed maneuvers. At my age i'm not going to pass off as a hooligan 😁 its my brothers fault, he rides a Triumph tiger 955i and has 3 Kawasaki ER5`s in the garage one of which he wants to put me on.. we shall see! But I'm glad to say perseverance paid off and I passed on my second attempt on a kawasaki Z650 back in November and I'm now a proud owner of a kawasaki ER5 yup one of my brothers 😁 I will cut my teeth on that so to speak and when I'm happy and confident enough I plan on acquiring a suzuki Vstrom 650 . *I've only been riding for a few weeks now. No prior experience... No prior experience with using a clutch in cars always been automatic for me. I'm having a hard time down shifting most times I try your way my timing is off obviously and it keeps jerking me and locking up the back wheel. I've gotten to the point these past few days where I'll shift up in gears(not smoothly), and when I get close to a stop sign or light I'll just hold in the clutch all the way and click the shift lever all the way down to 1st. Is that safe to do or am I going to ruin my ninja 250?*
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 3 жыл бұрын
You won’t ruin your bike but it’s not safe for the reason that if you have to get out of the way for some reason during your stop and you don’t know what gear you’ve clicked down too and now need to quickly move out of a cars way or whatever it can be dangerous. You might have the bike lock up on you and get into a pretty shitty situation. But it’s not hurting the bike
@SmokinMonkeyOG
@SmokinMonkeyOG 3 жыл бұрын
My suggestion is keep practicing and you’ll get better each time. 250 is perfect amount of power to learn on and not do anything that will hurt yourself or the bike if you don’t do it perfectly. Like the back tire locking up won’t be as harsh as on a bigger bike and easier for you to learn what not to do on a bigger bike in the future. It took me a while to get smooth too, probably a whole season if not more. And bikes have a wet clutch so you won’t hurt the bike as easily as a car when you don’t shift properly so just get out there and give er! Lol plus anyone buying your bike after will likely be a beginner and won’t know if the clutch is used up or not since they never felt a new clutch most likely

You should be okay. I’m guessing you just get the jerkyness when you shift up because you release the clutch then apply throttle a bit after you fully release. If that’s the case it will be a bit jerky but nothing will be damaged at all. But without seeing you ride myself I can’t tell you 100%

Every bike is a bit different in how to release the clutch but the main idea is to release the clutch when the rpm is matched to the gear you want to shift too. For my bike it’s easy to match since I’m used to the bike so I don’t have to let it out long. Just enough to slip the gear in. But that takes time and practice. I get the tire locking too but only once in a while and when I don’t rev match properly. Also if your tires are cold they’re more likely to lock up but it’s 95% throttle input.
