OK, let me give an example If your shoulder measurement is 14 inches and your bra to bra strap is 10 inches, you will divide your shoulder by 2 to get 7 inches and the bra to bra strap by 2 inches to get 5 inches (that is the first part) When you want to contour your upper chest to avoid gapping, you are going to mark that 5 inches on your chest line, after marking that 5 inches there might be up to 1.25 or 1.5 inches excesses which is as a result of the shoulder measurement, that excesses is what I used to contour that upper part. (Summary) The shoulder width is bigger than the bra to bra strap width, so when you mark the width of your bra to bra strap on your chest line, you will certainly have some inches left, that inches left is what was used to contour or take a dart at the upper chestline.
