Thank you Karen, for this wonderful tutorial as well as great tips and advice. I'm currently working on a portrait of two cats together. My piece will not be as detailed as this one because the client is on a tight budget....so I will focus the details in the eyes and face area to keep the professionalism and realism for them. I have done a few pieces with colored pencils and appreciate great artists as yourself that help others try different mediums. I'm so glad I found your video and tutorials.

that was really fascinating!!! thank you! I've never really seen anyone work in pencil this way,I love the effect you get, and it was really interesting to watch how you built the picture up-as a painter you generally work bottom to top and en masse,but to see you work a patch at a time and from top to bottom was really an eye opener! Thank you and I hope you make many more videos! I need to find out what these blending tools/solvents are and what burnishing means in this context!

Thanks! I use both a Bostitch electric sharpener and a Prismacolor hand sharpener. I get the sharpest points (like needle sharp) from the Prismacolor sharpener, so I use it more often.

It's called an Orbital Easel. I love it - it makes it easy to get to those otherwise awkward angles.

Wonderful work. How long did it took to finish? I am an artist too, but I draw with graphite, and every drawing takes me like a month... it is too much, but that's becouse I am very fussy with the result.

I use a Prismacolor hand sharpener. I replace it every once in a while, as it does eventually get dull. I get a much sharper point from that than my electric sharpener ever gave me, and it's much cheaper to replace when the blades get dull.

No, it doesn't bleed through. I use Mona Lisa Odorless Mineral Spirits, but Gamsol, Zest It, and other similar products work just as well.

Thank you. I tried baby oil from another post and it seemed to leave a shadow around the edge of where I put it.

Yes, I see it recommended a lot, but personally, I would never use baby oil for blending (or hairspray as a fixative). It may blend, but it damages the paper. I've always felt it's safer to stick with materials that were originally intended for art.
