Have you ever done solid backgrounds before? If so do you recommend the soft pastel sticks or something else?

I haven't as I prefer a glow or a scenic background rather than solid colour but if I did, I'd use either PanPastels as they're quick or soft pastel sticks. If I wasn't adding any details on top and it was just a solid background then either of those method would be ok =)

Question: It looks like you initially go in with black making it very dark. Am I seeing this correctly? I know you layer and layer but I’m confused.

Hi, I mention in the video why I use black first but for black fur it's really important to capture good contrast. This dog, given the lighting, was really dark so I had to be bold with the first base layer and go really dark. As I am using Pastelmat paper for this it means I can then layer midtones and highlights on top easily =). This ensures that maximum depth is achieved. I have lots of other tutorials here on KZbin of black fur and I don't always use black first, just depends on the reference photo and lighting but for this it was required =)
