great video!! I am an old pastel artist now but was taught all my life in oils, watercolors and acrylics ( Old school taught) to always do the backgrounds like you do here first ...WHY.?? .Old School answer: ''you are casting shadows and reflections as to what surrounds you!'' So doing background allows you to know which shadows of cool or warm to use . I love art and you are doing wonderfully with your art and videos!! Job well done...congrats!

Thank you Sheila! I can't remember if this was something I was taught but it certainly helped me to create the setting and the lighting first before adding the main subjects. It seems like the correct groundwork to do in my head. Plus those soft or crisp edges have something to sit on top of. Logistically it's background to foreground making that possible. Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated :-)

My goodness Emma, this is a stunning example of creating light and shadows! I work in colored pencil although I desperately hope to be able to afford to expand into pastels. It's been a dream of mine for many years to learn to work with pastels. I have pieces of velour paper and some pastelmat now I just have to save up for a good set of pastels. My hope is to get your animal set of unison as well as your light and shade set. Hopefully I will manage to get the carbothello pencils as well. At this point these are pipe dreams but I definitely enjoy watching you and I try to achieve some of the beautiful methods that you use interpreted into color pencil in the meantime. Please stay safe and continue this beautiful work that you do.

Thank you! I hope the universe sends some pastels your way soon. But I do think these ideas can be used in any medium so it's great that you're working in coloured pencil and honing your skills and artist's eye. Good luck!

I am very interested in your review of black pastels. I make most of my own pastels and am currently experimenting with a synthetic black spinel. Being mineral based it combines far better with my other pastels than those based on carbon or petroleum industry spinoffs like anilene. I would love to know which black pigments you find most suitable.

Hi Paul, I will be making another video now that I've bought nearly every black pastel I could find! I'm interested to hear about your synthetic black though and how that compares. Perhaps when I show which is the blackest I can find, you could compare that with yours?

Beautifully work! It is so amazing! 😍 What duct tape do you use? Mine destroyed the surface of Pastelmat 😞
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I always use a clear tape like sellotape as we call it in the UK. I also find the tape colour distracting when working so clear or white is best. There are more expensive artist tapes but I've used cheaper clear tape for years.
