From what I heard, Color always takes longer to produce, that's always hurted the deadlines of American comics. So I rather produce the pages for my comic series in black-and-white like how mangas are
@jamilsart65703 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I'm currently coloring some pages for a comic, and that adds an extra 2+ hours depending on how intricate the page is. I prefer to just work in black and white because I personally like the way a black and white comic looks. Jeff Smith was a huge inspiration to me when I first got into comics, and I prefer his BW stuff, over his color stuff.

I am 71 I have always wanted to refine my comic art. Gain the skills and knowledge to create my own comic strip. My illustration creating has always been refine, refine refine and refine again. Eventually coming to finished through tons of tracing paper and lucy machines. When people would see finished pieces. They loved them and ask to do one for them. But it takes me forever so I’d decline to do them. I never used color because I just wanted to use solid color no gradation. So now to fill my retirement time . I’m looking for someone who can teach me from the beginning. How to create my own traditional comic strip. Probably a simple 3 to 4 panel with the use of color. Procreate seems perfect to me. I have the app, iPad Pro 11 and Apple pen. But I can’t get up and started to even begin. I feel like a dunce. But if someone could begin with teaching this simple beginning. Then I feel we could proceed from there. So if that’s something you or somebody you know who could. I’d be very interested in hearing from you. Best regards, John Cronyn

Awesome video! Question though, I saw in a comment youre working on a 11x17 canvas, could you also work on the exact size your book would be printed as, or would the quality not be as good? Also, are you lettering pages in procreate or another app? Thanks for any info you can share.
@jamilsart65703 жыл бұрын
Hi there Sketch24, I'm sorry I'm replying so late to your comment. But I hope I'm able to answer your questions. I believe you can possibly work on an exact size of your book, but you have to make sure your PPI is at least 300 or higher if you want it to print out in decent quality. As for my lettering, I tried to letter this particular comic project on procreate at first, but ultimately gave up and did my letters on Clip Studio Paint instead. It IS possible to letter your comics on procreate, but for me, the process was much easier on Clip Studio.

This was very helpful, thank you! I've been drawing all my life, but am only now getting into digital drawing. That technique you used when refining your sketch, where you were resizing and repositioning parts of it - do you have any pointers on what that is called or how to learn it? Just the kind of magic you sometimes wish you had with traditional media ;)
@jamilsart65703 жыл бұрын
Hi Janine! I’m glad my video was very helpful to you! The technique I used for resizing and repositioning was the selection tool on procreate, and using the uniform (to resize) and warp (to make minor tweaks) options. As for pointers, I’d say just play around with the selection tool with your artwork. The beauty of digital art is, if you make a mistake, you can always undo.

I'm kinda curious about the lineart, because I usually have to use a really big canvas and brush to do details. If I use a more default size for both, the brush becomes too small, and I won't be able to really use the normal strokes. What sizes do you usually do for canvas and brush?
@303Thatoneguy Жыл бұрын
There’s a specific canvas in procreate just for comics. Be aware that it changes your color pallet and you can’t change it back to default while in the comic canvas.

@@asiarobinson9167 As someone that draws people occasionally, it often takes a lot of practice, as well as not being afraid to go through a lot of trial and error and occasionally doing some messy sketches and bad drawings! As one of the comments above says, definitely recommend looking up tutorials on anatomy, as well as figure drawing. I also recommend looking up some reference photos for figure drawing to trace simple box shapes over, while you're starting out (and carrying around a small sketchbook to do quick, messy gesture scribbles while observing people around you).

I hate to be that guy but I think the term inking should be reserved for physical art, specifically ink with a brush or nib. Line work would be a better way to describe what you're doing digitally without undermining the art of real inking or digital line work. Both share similarities but are also extremely different Great vid

🙄🤦🏾♀️ So disappointing that in 2022 such outdated (and unfounded) opinions of the digital art process persist.
@Misskraehe Жыл бұрын
As an artist who works in both digital and traditional, inking is a fine term for a digital inker…. Just like penciling with digital pencils or painting with digital paintbrushes, spray painting with digital spray paint… the list goes on and on. What would you have them do? Call everything line work? Umm……Digital coloring? Really unrealistic perspective. Also people do linework traditionally, where should the line be drawn?
@bluebay1031 Жыл бұрын
@blue fridge That’s good for you, but for a lot of us it’s easier to have a layer we can freely be loose and make mistakes on while figuring out the linework and composition, which allows us to ink more confidently since we know 99% of how we want it to look. The fact that it’s all editable means nothing, because “saving a step” only works if the time it takes to just ink is significantly *less* than the amount it takes to do pencils then inks which, for many of us, isn’t the case.
@beanpasteposts Жыл бұрын
You're undermining the art of digital inking with your statement though?
