Many artists struggle with character consistency and that can confuse the reader or viewer of your comic or your animation.

As an beginner 2d animator, staying on model has been a constant struggle. It's easy if I use a rig, but doing it traditionally. Just gives me more respect to OG animators.

the process of 3D modeling my characters actually helped me learn even more about the construction of the human body and exposed some inconsistencies - stuff like one character's hips being wider from a 3/4 view or the shape of another's hair from different angles. Modeling from the top and bottom was eye opening because it's a strong reminder that the face and torso are curved, not just cubes with flat sides.

So many 2d artists refuse to learn 3d. But I've found that it is the single most effective practice to learn better construction, and improve drawing forms at different angles.

​@@TrentKaniuga I've found sculpting the fastest way to find weaknesses in anatomy. For instance few months ago I've started studying canine anatomy and I thought I understand muscles of forearm pretty well (cause I could effortlessly draw it correctly from front, back, medial and lateral view or I could spot muscles and tendons on refs), but after trying to sculpt it with clay I struggled a lot in few areas. That was awesome cause some things started to make much more sense and I discovered it's a way that speeds up my learning process. Since then sometimes I do very small (cause it's faster) sculpture with clay of whatever I picked to improve. Also I'd recommend sculpting very small box and taking it outside, looking at it in lit and shaded areas, then taking it to deeper shadows in woods to see if that makes a huge differences, put it closer to smth what can bounce light at it.. later cutting out flat planes from it to see how values change, digging holes, adding other smaller boxes to it- it really speeds up understanding how bounce and skylight work with planes. It's a big difference testing it indoor and outdoor! For faces it's handy to have a small mirror around and check own head from different angles, it's pretty useful for lips area which tend to change a lot with various expressions :)

I designed a character's head I was super excited with. It looked perfect for what I wanted. I drew it from the side, but for the life of me couldn't come up with a front shot that looked just as good or detailed. I was so upset I basically had to redesign the whole thing. lol

Thank you for this. I've been drawing for a while and have never thought of doing this. From this point, I'll probably always start with character sheets for my main, recurring characters

I love the consistency in the 90s Batman/Superman/Beyond cartoons. Really great stuff in Bruce Timm’s iconic art style.

I find it straightforward to maintain proportions when turning from side to side, just not when the head is being tilted up to bottom, especially with features like the jaw

The 3D models in Clip Studio Paint can now be customized at will. I'm working on a children's book right now, and using a 3d model that I customized to represent my character has made all the difference in mataining consistency throughout the book.

It's crazy how some art channels that started by teaching things like this are now only focused on pumping out content. It's like they forgot about the art. Never stop making great videos like this. I really appreciate it.

Thanks! I rather enjoy just drawing and chatting about the process. But its true... that type of video isnt as popular on YT as it used to be. We're sort of... discouraged (with fewer views in the algorithm) to do this.

As I'm trying to work on building my own characters for a project I'm wanting to do. I realize I got something like 10 characters in mind I want to do. The amount of work I need to do is monumental. I need to just draw faces reliably well just for this aspect. Kind of hard honestly to sit down at my minimal skills given that some of the methods for making heads I'm not a fan of. While I don't plan on doing a comic of my characters, I'm still drawn to artists like Michael Turner JUST for the linework. And having studied game dev, this whole concept isn't lost on me.

This might sound backhanded but I like that you include some low-key cheats and shortcuts. I've had a sort of self doubt about trying to sculpt a base in blender to work from, but in the end it's really just about the result and what the audience feels about it. Just as long as you're not pretending you didn't do whatever you did to look cooler

As long as it has a simple drawing app, you can draw this way. It’s not about the tools, it’s about understanding fundamentals of art itself (as mentioned in the video).

I do have one rather interesting question and I dont think starter artist usually know this but how can one protect your art from plagiarism from social media. For instance your work is shared on KZbin and im sure on other platforms to so how do you protect your art work?

You cant. The video itself gets protected by YT. I get notifications when someone re-uploads my content and i can request a takedown. But ideas, sketches, character designs, stories... they all get stolen. You just have to keep making more, and hope that you become well-known enough that your audience (public opinion) falls in your favor. Trying to pay a lawyer to protect your art is an expensive impossibility for an artist. I know this is disheartening. But the only other option is to never post your art.

Hi trent , im 14 and my mom doesnt want me to follow concept art , what do I do she says " I dont see you doing that " and that just sounds like she thinks I cant do it . I fell in love with concept art and Im starting to do digital art ( 1 year of traditional ) and I cant think about following other career . Should I really have this mindeet that I will get the job no matter what ?

You're going to have to put in a LOT of work. But I believe that anyone can learn. 1-Start with fundamentals of drawing.2-, learn the difference between concept art and illustration (ie "how concept art is used to make games) 3- start making mods or contribute to indie game development. 4- start applying to full time studios. There are MANY 17-18 year old indie game developers that are making money from making games. Once you start making money from it, your parents may be more supportive. But once you are moved out, and supporting yourself financially, it doesnt matter what they want from you. You earn your right to be your own person. MOST parents just want to make sure that you can take care of yourself and they will be proud once you figure that out for yourself.

that is really awesome that at fourteen you already know what you want to do. Do get really great at the fundamentals traditionally because it is easier to transfer the skills to digital. Perspective, color theory, anatomy, composition, and chiaroscuro are some of the fundamentals. You don't have to believe what you are told, of not being seen doing concept art. All that matters is how you see yourself in the future. You are you and there will never be another one like you ever in the existence of time and universe. One life to rock the heavens, and you don't want to miss your shot. Imagine the world without the internet, and the people that should have worked and pushed to make it real, did not do it, because they believed what they were told, that they were not seen doing that.
