This is the aspect of manga and anime that interests me the most. I've been looking through a lot of naruto model/reference sheets online and I've noticed the difference in art style between the 3 installments of the franchise. I feel like it became less appealing in shippuden and even less in boruto e.g kakashi's hair was originally drawn tall and wavy but with each installment that follows it just keeps getting shorter and spikier so now it just looks like every other characters hair. It lost that iconic/distinct look that it once had. But that's just one example. There are loads of other things that went wrong with the art style. In The original naruto sheets the art style was more detailed, expressive, more anatomically correct etc

Man I actually needed this video because I've been working on character design sheets for my webcomic/ manga. I've only done basic facial expressions, angles and body poses mostly so you can see the personality of the character in the way that they stand and the types of faces they make.

In my opinion shading isn't entirely necessary for a character sheet as how the shading goes depends on the environment for whatever you use the character for, so I just stick with the flat colors.
@realswobby4 жыл бұрын
Shading and lighting is also important, the sheet is meant to represent how the character has to be drawn in every drawing, this includes shadows and light. Shadows can be soft or hard, or drawn in some other specific way, it has to be included in a sheet. Not to mention, shadows and lights are also colors (mostly). It depends on a style, not every style has to have realistic shading ect. Drawings with only flat basic colors don't look as interesting for potential clients as these detailed ones.
@KingBaller06gaming4 жыл бұрын
@@realswobby I can understand that if it's for a certain client and they ask for it, but as I said, since the environment is a factor that will change the colors (depending on the style) so it would be difficult for one to reference the shading unless one does a reference sheet for any type of environment that would be necessary for what the character is bring used for.
@realswobby4 жыл бұрын
@@KingBaller06gaming If you want to have successful character sheets, you need shading and lighting. Just look how pros do it. If they do it like that and they achieve success, they're not wrong. Ofc you can do whatever you want. But nothing is too hard to learn about, just saying.
@KingBaller06gaming4 жыл бұрын
@@realswobby "Successful" is relative to what someone is aiming for. If I'm simply aiming to showcase the look of a character and their base colors then shading isn't necessary for that.
@realswobby4 жыл бұрын
@@KingBaller06gaming If you only draw for yourself then maybe that's enough. But no serious clients will get interested in too simple drawings, like only lines and basic colors...

You could start now if you wanted to. If you’re an absolute beginner and want to make manga art like you see in comic books and anime, that will take years. If you want to speed up the process, just make sure your art sessions are productive and sprinkled with frequent gesture studies and drawing from references. I’d recommend a KZbinr called moderndayjames, he has a lot of good advice.
