You sir, are a true boss when it comes to teaching..

You mention one of my favorite phrases in this video, which is: "You need to know the rules to break them". That's a piece of advice that I completely and totally ignored when I first started out as an artist. I had grown up watching Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, and other cartoons like that, and I had always copied the style that I thought looked best. It was a big eye-opener when I started taking art classes as a Visual Arts major in middle school and was taught that advice, because I realized that looking and being inspired by other's art was only half the battle. Years later, I think that's the best thing I've learned throughout the entire time I've been drawing. Thank you for sharing that with your viewers!

Aw man, dude I miss this content so much. I'm mad that KZbin made this so hard to find. Though maybe it's because they're trying to push newer content, which is fair... but still! Classic video! I still think about this, and it's been 9 years!

I found your channel a couple days ago and I've been obsessed ever since! not only do I love your style and love watching you draw, your personality makes the video enjoyable. You enjoy drawing and it shows. I also love the advice you give. I've been drawing for almost 9 years but I'm not satisfied with my work, so I just stopped drawing. I haven't drawn in a year or so, but you really have advice on everything. especially since I'm one of those artist who can copy something really well, but I can't communicate my own thoughts. I need to learn anatomy and perspective of the human body and do more of these, reference then from memory.

Not only about the actual art of drawing, but understanding that I'm going to hate my drawings for a long time before I start liking them. I am a portrait artist and your suggestions are highly applicable to realism. When I take time to draw faces and the human form from reference ( over and over and over), and use plaster casts of the planes of the head, skeleton, and skull, then when I am drawing a live model from life I already have a memory of what normal is. My job as a portrait artist is to see and draw that slight variation that makes a person who they are. I doubt that I will ever be an accomplished landscape painter because I am too uncomfortable in plain air to take the time to fully study nature. It is my experience that the best plein air painters that I know **love** being outdoors and have drawn the landscape enough ( over many years of** daily** practice) to have fully internalized both what is normal and the variations from normal that see before them.

Subbed and liked! Thanks! I was always a drawer from imagination too. I like just making stuff randomly from my imagination. But it gets frustrating. I started drawing from reference more recently and when I go to draw from imagination/memory it kinda makes me come up with cooler stuff so its definitely worth doing. When I can strike the right balance between the two, I love my original work - But when I get too stubborn to draw from reference I wind up hating my work and feeling like I'm wasting time. i think the conclusion for me is, time spent on the page is never time wasted... No matter what happens, practicing on my own is #1. Alot of people would say if you practice WRONG you're gonna get WORSE results. But I think the desire to go out and find how to do something only comes from trying to do it my way so many times and getting stuck. Then when I go to learn something, like watching this video I get alot more out of it because I've already had a lot of experience, even if its experience making mistakes.

I was obsessed that my illustrations weren't as good as others but I wanted it to be "pure" so I avoided drawing from reference because I thought it would change my style and taint it. I really connect to this, thank you so much for the advice, Will. I also fell into the pit known as "copying other's work", though since watching this video, I've tried to limit myself towards drawing from reference (for example, I was trying to find foundations for character designs for a personal project/comic strip), and eventually, I started to draw on my own, trying to project a story between two characters, and though it might not have been portrayed as perfect- people seemed to think my comics were funny, and they appreciated that I seemed to tell a story through my drawings. I want to thank you for the help, keep up the fantastic work! x

Yes it will take work but you helped me so much! Thank you

This helps so much. I'm still terrible at drawing from reference, and because I don't do it enough I am continuously frustrated drawing from life that I don't enjoy doing it. So I keep drawing from my imagination like I do WAY too much. I'm certainly improving, but when people would tell me to "draw from reference" and "draw what you see" whenever I HAD done just that (I guess they'd seen something that I seemed to draw based on how I thought it looked). Long story short, it was a frustrating experience, so it was a bit hard for me to understand how to incorporate the two (even though it's actually a pretty simple concept to grasp). Anyway, long story short (again), thank you for this incredibly helpful video!
