The following video is an account of my personal experience with learning to draw from my imagination. I have made this video with the intention of hopefully providing some valuable information to others, and assisting them in their own pursuit of learning how to draw. My Artwork will continue to develop and I aim to document my experience and progress whilst passing on any advice that helps me.

Thank you to everyone. The channel recently passed 250,000 subscribers. This video is a brief account of how my artwork has developed over the years (along with my content on KZbin) and how I started to explore drawing from my own imagination. I have a long way to go, but I intend on documenting my progress and passing on what I learn through the videos I make. I am grateful to have an audience who shares the same passion for drawing ✍️

YOU inspired me so much! I'm very far from drawing as well as you do (i'm sure you thinking that i shouldn't care about that) but because i got bored fast with copying i'm presently in a phase where i try to improve my spatial imagination as much as possible, i asked a lot of people how to do it and they answered with vague uninteresting things but in fact i watched videos and all and in order to improve spatial imagination, you need to observe for quite long time something (it can be precise such as an eye, a nose, a plant, pose…) then hide it and draw it, when it's done you can look again quickly at the thing you want to draw then try to find your mistakes and what you can improve, draw it again with light, color or form variation and then draw it with different point of view or position without looking at the previous picture… u might firstly have a hard time doing this but if you determines a number of time or a number of drawing you have to do each day and if you do it until you suceed it would be a lot easier to imagine those things. Now i told you something about spatial imagination but general imagination is more like telling a story, knowing how to connect and create links between elements so in order to improve that, the only thing i can say to help you is to improve your culture, observe and be amazed

I'm also very distracted but I've been drawing quite seriously this month at least 30 minutes a day and drew 7 hour one day and I only have 18 days left before I go into art study, i'm so average on everything so your video inspire me to do my best during those days and during my art studies, i'm going to take a look at your tutorials and i'll share it to!

@@peterjamesgabinete5346 you didn't get the point of the comment. If he knows how to draw what he thinks, then yes, he's good, if he's able to do it but it looks worse, he's mediocre, if he's able to do it, but in a form where it looks far from what he imagined, he's in need of an improvement. The point of the comment was that to be able to make good art, you need to be able to imagine enough good things to put on the piece of paper

Notice how imaginative drawings already looks comical or cartoonish (even though it is extremely detailed and the artist might be drawing from memory). Using reference (but not necessarily photocopying a picture taken by a camera) has always been the ways of the old masters. That is why angles wings in old paintings seems dead and stiff (because they studied the wings of a died pigeon or dove). Personally I feel all artist feels a little guilty conscience when they make photorealism (even though they might not admit it), buy we should always let tha guilt push us to the extreme. Anyway, it's a geat video, I enjoyed watching and seeing your perspective.

Thanks for this insight. As a young creative, I am the opposite. I never really drew from any reference (still don't and have to work on) and just draw from pure imagination. This route is bittersweet because your ideas that come from your imagination come out very raw and undefined the first couple times. You eventually work up to the point where you draw something that is what you imagined it to look like. When drawing from what I see in front of me for the first time, I got the proportions right on the money but did not understand the fundamentals at all. It is bittersweet from both routes but as long as you are having fun and fix what you want to fix then it is all good. Enjoy the rest of your day!

@Elavizz
@Elavizz 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe that's what it makes a good artist. To have the knowledge of the fundamentals (photorealistic drawing) and being confident in drawing without any reference (creative drawing). For me, I always draw by imagination but I see then that there is a lack of the other side, the part that need to be studied. The video made me clear that the key is to practice both ways. And then when you draw something and it looks good to yourself, you get motivated and do it without any demand

I'm 27 years old I love painting and sculpture. And I don't use photo reference, in any art I make. started from my elementary days, the reason was I'm it's very hard for me to draw figure that copying from a photo. When I want things it never erased in my head. And I feel weird about it When I was in highschool without any art lessons or internet I've come up with practice of anatomy shading, as I love to draw without knowing I was into something very good as they say. When I was in college I've push my self to use reference and it was good also, but I feel not I'm not comfortable, and my works are highperialism. And without reference is a very fast process for me than using photo. I don't understand what is with me.

I’ve been stuck in a cycle of find an image, draw the image as accurately as possible, then repeat. Recently I came to the realization that doing that isn’t making me happy anymore. I’ve been distraught and worried that I’m not a good artist because I can only draw realistically from a reference, but this video has calmed me down and helped me realize there is a direction to go, and I there is a way to improve. Thank you for this video. I’m going to begin my process of learning.

I had this story in my mind that I had developed for years. Almost complete, the characters are there, the environments and how things should be. The only problem is I had to be original, tiny reference is fine but I just really want create something that is just from me. So I had to rely on my imagination. I tried to redraw all my characters, the places and stuff from my story to the paper but I'm really struggling to let them come out of my mind. So I thought to myself, maybe drawing is not my thing but just story writing, but I don't want that. I really want to leave a legacy before I die, something that can be left without fading and can be passed from viewers to viewers. So even if my drawings are gonna be a pile of trash, I'm still gonna improve until it catches the eye of the people and give them a story that they've never heard.

You. Are. Amazing. Lately I've just had this stupid urge to be better than everyone at drawing, and I've been trying so hard to get better at drawing. I've been viewing myself as less than I actually am. I always try to judge myself based off what people decades older than me are doing (I'm twelve, and born with an extreme gift) I'm extremdely good for my age (Not to brag or offend anybody) I can draw realistic things if I put my mind to it, and for some reason I just feel like I'm not good enough. (Don't look at my channel I'm really bad at drawing on computers Lol) I have no idea what you said but for some reason something about this video made me loosen up just now. Thank you *soo* much.

Lily Fredericks 3 years ago, when I first graduated high school(17 years old) I wanted to become an artist. I watched countless videos about drawing and things like that, but unlike you, I was not that good yet. Unfortunately in those videos I watched, no one explained how drawing is a skill, something that is learned and refined, drawing isn’t something you’re born with it comes with practice. I didn’t get much support in my choice to become an artist, and I was constantly comparing myself to other artists, I would watch a video, try to use the tips and tricks, and do terrible compared to the video. I eventually dropped art because I didn’t think I was good enough. I’m now 21, I’ve been kinda looping around trying to figure out what I want to do and I’m now getting back to art. The only difference this time, is I’m blocking out the negativity. Instead of comparing yourself to other artists. Compare yourself to how much you’ve improved. Since I started it’s been night and day on my improvement, and that’s something to be proud of, you should start looking at your accomplishments, don’t look at what your dream artist is making and say “Damn I wish I was that good”. Look at his art and say, “I’ve improved a lot since last time, as long as I keep practicing I will make it”

When I was a kid, I used to be able to draw from my imagination, from my "visual library". But when I got older, for some reason I started using reference images, much like you. Picking a photo and drawing it practically identically. Of course I got tired of this though, I *am* tired of it. I have ideas, images, scenery, visual stories in my head that I want to illustrate and put down on paper but every time I try to sit down and draw it, spill it all out, its like the cogs in my brain just stop completely. And the feeling of failure settles in leading to a block where I dont draw again for days on end. I want to improve as an artist, ive always wanted to. Being self-taught, I didnt/don't know things that are probably fundamental for art. I just sort of went with what I knew, and slowly but surely became progressively better, gaining more and more knowledge throughout the years. But I still dont know enough to be as great as an artist as I want to be. This video is a BIG help. I feel so enlightened and inspired. Creating art from pure imagination has been a struggle for me for so long. I feel that ive now been led to the right direction, though. I can't express how thankful I am for this, honestly. Thank you

@Muneeb Wani You should try to simplify shapes you think are complex. And from then on when you feel like it simplify the shapes less and less and you'll eventually be able to make the complex shapes you wanted to draw. I might be wrong though, because everyone uses different ways to teach themselves how to draw. Or maybe you should watch some videos on KZbin/or search around the Internet for drawing habits you want to include into your drawing program.

I think a good way to teach yourself to draw from imagination is to sit down when your a bit tired and think of somewhere you have been. It could be a beach or an old house you lived in. Fly around and see how much you can remember of that place and then if possible start to draw it. Then from there you can use that frame to start to add things. Or imagine something new.

I've always drawn based on photo-realism too. Although it's impressive, I also agree that it becomes tedious and feels like it lacks creativity in a way. I've always admired animators and tattoo artists for their ability to create out of pure imagination, but I never can. The issue being I don't practice it. I have a fun imagination yet can't imagine putting my ideas to paper. Maybe I'll be able to use your vids to begin that process. Good video!

I think Art Masters like Leonardo Divinci perfected the technical aspect of "Realism" which is sort of a mathematical Left hemisphere of the brain function which decode sequential numbers and letters and could use the Right hemisphere of the brain which function is for creative abstract thought and creative concepts. I remember in art school there were many Traditional painters who had the phenomenal talent for rendering hyper-realistic portraits which were great but they could only copy what they say they did not create paintings or drawings just from their imagination..and many had a very hard time with this although they were the envy of many extremely creative artists that were average technically their art ended up being mostly abstract and conceptual... which is what gave rise to modern art which is more about the concepts then technical ability demonstrated in Classical Art . Running the left and the right brain as an artist is a very special gift that sets Artists such as your self who can run both hemispheres in tandem apart!

well this is where experimental art develops creativity. you ever just scribble nothing in an entire notebook instead of trying to make anything that represents something? no you never would would you? but what if you did? that's a challenge isn't it? to not care what you draw and be so focused but more breaking out of that straining focus and muscle memory to your imagination where you are free to draw a pointless line or a powerful piece.

I'm glad this video was recommended to me because I am going through this same problem I only draw from picture I search or draw from refernce its hard for me to draw from imagination. I am also a self thaught. This video just made me realize that I too can learn how to draw from imagination because lately I've been feeling dawn that its hard for me to draw from imagination. Thank you so much for making this video. I have already like and subscribed and hope that I improve with my drawings from watching your videos. How I much I wish had the skill to have even done one of yours, even digitally. I practice a lot but I’m still not happy with anything I create, physical or not /: Edit: I think my main problem is my memory idk sorry I have the ideas, and can sorta recreate things, I just don’t have the skill to back any of it up. Loved the video :)

I am struggling with the exact same thing rn, been watching how-to videos on perspective, foreshortening, figure, and gesture. I am tired looking for reference then just make a realistic drawing based on it. Felt like I'm just pasting a picture to my sketchbook. I got tired abt it and it leads me to this video which I'm happy cuz I didn't know ppl felt the same.

You're getting really good, you're on your way to becoming a really professional and creative artist. One small suggestion, you might want to add a little more contrast to make these images pop more. A little more black, maybe with pen and ink or charcoal pencils added with the graphite. Just an idea. Take it easy and keep up the great work. Peace.

Dear Dan, Amazing work. I have been in art education for many years and am about to write my second drawing course for an online homeschooling company. I liked your comments about how you felt as a teenager. I am trying to research themes and starting points to use for 11-14 year olds, and how to identify with young people now (I am 51). Most art curriculums stick to the same themes and never really tap into the world of modern day designers, artists and people like you. I would also like to reference real life people who have art at the centre of their lives, not always dead artists from a previous era. Any ideas would be welcome. Thank you again for your thoughts and honesty.

Love this explanation of making your own Visual Library. Not sure if you coined this term but it's a good one. If you put this much effort into your relationships and life you must be a great friend/boyfriend and a good employee. I mean this sincerely as someone probably old enough to be your grandmother! Thank you for passing on your learning and wisdom to this aged lady.
