Pastels are honestly so underrated. Maybe because they are so messy to use, but the texture of them can be so amazing and the ability to blend with smudging with them is so helpful. I prefer the harder chalk ones, not the crayon like ones.

I started attempting this before I saw there was a video! Now I am watching to get ideas. This is my first time playing with pastels. Oh, and I started doing this on plain white paper. Initially failed at making clouds, so I flipped the picture upside down and continued by doing this!

Beautiful drawing. Even though this was a video for beginners I found it easy enough to follow along and pausing the video every once in awhile. I love that you have your colours all lined up beside the paper before you start as well, this makes it much easier for me to know exactly what colours I need to have ready before I begin. If you want to practice you can start with camel pastels. But more better results and professional use you can switch on to mungyo pastels

Do you have any suggestion for the type of paper/board for a soft pastel drawing around the size of 50in x 30in? Doesn't have to be exact..I'm having a hard time looking for paper/board that big.

+Sabaton I use simple pastel papers available in local art shops. You can use Brustro soft pastel paper. It is nice paper. ☺😊

you can any use sheet provided it has a rough surface --- otherwise, it would be hard for the pastels dust to stick to the paper

Pastels become harder when they become a little damp due to moisture 😐. Try to keep them dry. They will work good ☺

+Julie Bridget Bona I have not used any other paper for pastel drawing yet. If you want to use any other paper it must have grains (rough) so that it can hold Pastel dust in it.

I think you are using a plain paper. it is better to use rough paper. And smudging is better to get your pastels stick to paper
