Toriyama has a very simple art style, but he's still able to convey a lot with it, especially in his action scenes. He shows that you don't need to have a realistic style to be successful

What’s crazy is that DB has so many styles - Toriyama has 30+ years of experience and honestly I think it peaked between the start of DBZ and the Frieza Saga - a compromise between the hard action and the soft lines of the original Dragon Ball. Goku’s edges aren’t as slick and hard. That’s just me though. Anyway, great video chief!

The Frieza arc was fun, but for me I'd go a little deeper than that because the early Super Saiyan hairstyle looked kind of janky. The Namek/Frieza arc was also fun because it incorporated the adventure element far better than the rest of the Z storyline.

Fr, it kind of depends on the sagas but there are so many styles you can choose from, like Toyotaros, toriyamas, Yamamuro. Etc.

I'm creating a main villain for a AU manga of DBZ, it's basically an android but made from organic materials instead of synthetic, and it was created by Frieza's species (which in this AU is extinct). I won't fret a lot about explaining it's design, but the main thing about him is that he has a really long tail, and the tip of that tail can turn into a hand with 6 fingers, 2 of which are thumbs. He can use said hand to copy attacks like piccolo's beam and the Kamehame, and to perform attacks original to the character.

God Tier art style i wouldn't say simple i would say efficient and charismatic i love how he draws aliens and machines and his Frieza design is my favorite even more in the colors of purple and white, I even have the Action Figure until today.

One correction about there only being two eye shapes: let’s not forget about the android eyes, being sharper than the rounded eyes but rounder than the boxy eyes at some parts, it applies to many characters even aside from the actual androids

Fun fact in the scenes where they eyes are wide boxed but open on one side (no line to connect it it’s just white to skin tone) they are intentionally done that way to communicate gokus family and a few other characters. Gokus eyes are supposed to always be that way except when he transforms (or gets serious) then it becomes that tight closed box style that piccalo and many others have also goku used to have a much bigger frame either massive shoulders and massive chest he slimmed down after getting ssj and slimed down even more as he got older keeping the tone he’s always had but going down in bulk

The manga and anime art styles are different, despite both being Dragon Ball. While Toriyama doesn't use hatching now, he used to (he might use it now, i'm now sure) but the anime definitely has used hatching before, and it also uses shading. And also, in the "newer" Dragon Ball manga, Dragon Ball Super, the artist is replaced by Toyotarou.

There are some different female body types, especially for female Saiyans. Just look at LSSJ Kale. Ribrianne is also a good example. There’s also a variety of male body types that just aren’t focused on because, well, it’s a fighting manga. But specifically, you can tell when Gohan slacks of on his fighting, his muscles become much less toned and he becomes really scrawny. This is super noticeable in resurrection F and it’s even a whole thing, because Gohan hadn’t trained for like 4 years. Another body type is Beerus’s. He literally looks like he’s on the brink of starvation, and they play on the idea by making his twin brother really chubby, yet both of them are stronger than all of the z fighters. There are also 3 types of eyes, rounded, sharp, and for lack of a better term, robotic. The robotic eyes are usually reserved for the androids and adjacent characters.

i think we are all conflating design with style. The facial features, anatomy, build and what not could easily be design elements. but the inking, rendering could be the style. I came to this conclusion because all of the dbz characters are all wildly different in design, but they all have some form of consistency in art style. for example, the old guy with the glasses and the white beard could easily be from any other anime based on design alone, but there has to be some form of lineart style which is in it that attaches it to Akira Toriyama. Ive been trying to draw an IRL old person IN akira's style (from irl to dbz style straight on), and it is CHALLENGING. im trying to juggle the likeness of the person to that of the likeness of the art style at the same time. Ive created some drafts but some of them either look like some generic anime old person (not in style to dbz) too realistic (not in style to anime in general) or doesnt look like the irl person at all (but looks like dbz) any more resources regarding art styles would be appreciated!

Dragonball non fan: The art tells me nothing, it's generic, and is off from modern art and storytelling Dragonball fan: That's the point...and why it's iconic. Judge the work not what you want it to be or you will always suffer from yeah old work is worse then new work because new work built off old work. Man from the future: One piece art is trash cause it conveys too much and simple is best, less exposition was good in the past, now we like no exposition, no info, so we can form our own plots since all plots are achieved... Exaggeration but you get the point. That said, i see and agree with his points. Especially because he is a non fan. I though DBZ was simple too, but it took dragon quest and other official authors looking up to him to notice he is great, regardless of his story not being super deep in philosophy about life, its like watching creed, boxing. Its exciting. Plus few can copy his layouts manga wise.
