I've been reviewing every DBZ fight from raditz (Up to Vegeta now) and there soooo much to go back and appreciate. Especially with the Saiyan saga at least, there's just so much there that's different compared to even what's in the cell saga. In a lot of ways it's alike a different series with different characters. So much to appreciate in DBZ, there's a good reason why it triggered the mega boom in anime popularity

Love this! Clarity is a BIG Thing for me too. At times u read a Manga & the story & art are really good, But I may have to reread pages Cuz Idk WTF is goin on during Chaotic Battles. All the Black & white affects it negatively at times, But manga like OG Dragon Ball, One Punch Man, Berserk, Kengan Ashura/ Omega I can follow easily cuz the panels breathe & give a clear flow of action. Honestly for some cases if the Manga is great & easy to follow I'll prefer it over an Anime cause I can read way faster than I can watch something & time is really important to me these days.

Some comics really have composition issues that Dragon Ball cleverly avoids. I'll sometimes find myself confused at the sequence of events because a panel or bubble was in a weird spot (probably out of convenience), and some older superhero comics even give you numbered panels and/or arrows pointing from one panel to the other to help alleviate that confusion (in the clunkiest way possible). However, this can also be utilized as another storytelling tool. In Batman: The Court of Owls, there are a sequence of pages that are printed in a different orientation than normal, with a few even upside down. It's not a printing error, it's a storytelling device, because the pages themselves chronicle Batman getting lost and slowly being driven insane. The non-traditional orientation induces disorientation on purpose to put us in Batman's state of mind. In short, even bad layouts can be used to convey something for your story.

Even though Sensei Toriyama was a master of his craft, we still find these days some younglings who would dare talk shit about dragon ball and compare it with new artworks and say that new artworks are better than dragon ball . That is the epitome of complete ignorance and disrespect, the young generation need to educate themselves about dragon ball and toriyama's works, we all need to make a tribute to Toriyama sensei through appreciating all his artworks if possible, *Even though he didn't write mangas to convey messages, the messages delivered in the mangas and anime are truly fascinating We all need to pay tribute to Toriyama sensei and study his artworks RIP 鳥山先生 god bless your soul and may we all meet someday

Something that i find fascinating is how despite the segregation and classism in the entire media industry, alot of the rules and practices are basically universal. Whether you're working on a comic, a live action film, a photography or motion graphics, you need to work sequences, rule of thirds, positioning, body language, angles, clarity, everything that mark has mentioned in this video applies to the pure principal of Media.

I think another strength of his art is the simplicity. It’s really easy to tell what’s happening. Other manga artists I’ve noticed cram so much detail into the art that it can be hard to see what’s happening when it’s in black and white. Toriyama uses a lot of stark contrast so you can always tell what is happening.

I'm drawing my own manga. Videos like these, exploring a mangaka's art style, not only in character design but also in how they plan their panels, speech bubble placement and shot composition are great learning tools for me. Back when my drawings were very (and I mean VERY) amateurish, everyone praised how easy my story was on the eyes. That's because I had watched your previous videos on the Dragonball Super manga where you talked about the major differences between Toyotarou and Toriyama's art styles and philosophies and took to heart what you mentioned about the layout of the page and having the last panel make you want to read the next one. Now my art has improved and I'm working on a new story (well, a revision of my previous work) on the side, as I work now as an assistant for a mangaka. Mark has pointed it out several times over the years, but even then it is criminally understated how incredible Toriyama is with his paneling, page construction, and his control of timing. I'm hard pressed to find a lot of mangaka that can compare, even if they push boundaries elsewhere. A while ago Mark used the Killing vs Bacterian fight to show that, but in terms of raw action I think the best showcase of that talent is the Vegeta vs Recoome matchup. It has such force and kinetic energy while also working as a visual callback to Goku's assault on Nappa in the previous saga. The only mangaka I see currently working who match Toriyama are Murata and possibly Satoru Noda, they're phenomenal.

I think an underrated thing about Toiyamas drawings are the fact that in heavy action scene he'll draw in such a way that you could accidently look at a page 3 different ways, but the drawings all are able to have a flow that works no matter how its read. The page that sticks out to me is Tiens death to Nappa, when you turn the page you IMMEADTLY see nappa unphased, but its the wrong panel so you go up, and see Tien panting, then you see piccolos reaction. But theres multiple ways you could read that page and it doesnt mess up the story at all.

*"Would it have been better if toriyama drew this information instead of telling us"* This explains one of my major pet peeves with the modern DB, the whole "Off-Screen" training shtick. In the OG manga toriyama used to come up with some quirky reason behind power ups whether it be Potaras or the Divine Water or kaioken or great ape or interesting training methods or infamously the Super Saiyan. Toriyama was a master of a delivering otherwise mundane concepts in a fun way.

Man this is taking me back to my College days where I took a class in Comic design. Had to read through all of Scott's various books and a bunch of graphic novels like Bone, Watchman, Maus, Malcom X, Lone Wolf and Cub, etc. The material cost for that class was INSANE for books alone. It was honestly a great time but we had to create a full page comic ever week to present for class and just doing a single page in a week was tough for me. Probably one of the few classes I ever made an A in. My favorite one that I did was about a guy escaping a fire from the top of a building. The entire page was of the burning building itself and the comic panels were of the guy as he made his way down the building escaping through the various rooms and what he encountered in that room. I wish I still had those workds but I think I lost them in my apartment fire a few years ago.

Big shoutout to the editor because those edits flow spectacularly and look so professional. I especially love how much Mark stands in physically to emphasize stuff. And they look so clean when he is animated on screen from a still image of his IRL form.

Growing up as a Japanese kid in the States, I had the entire manga collection. Before I learned how to read Japanese, I used to just look at the pictures but I was still able to enjoy and somewhat understand what was going on. I learned early through Dragon Ball that a picture really is worth a thousand words.

Toyotaro is a brilliant artist, and has definitely made the manga his own, but when comparing the two in terms of dynamic composition, it’s not even close. I honestly don’t think you can make a full length video highlighting the complexity of his work like you can with Akira

I never realise this thing can impact how the readers see things. pure genius of Akira.

I had never learned anything about DB before watching many animes and reading many more mangas (including OP in 3.5 weeks). Eventually, I decided it was time to start reading DB. After coming from other shonen mangas (specifically battle mangas), I was so shocked by how clear and ALIVE the characters looked on the page. I read DB so quickly just because it was so easy to follow everything going on, from the original DB all the way to the Buu arc. Even if the stories are good, DB will remain my gold standard for what a manga should aspire to be. Even Super is wildly outclassed by its predecessors. God, Toriyama is such a good artist and author

Fun fact (that I'm aware Mark alreasy knew due to him saying he read the book on the JoJo series. But for anyone else who didn't know...): In his book "Manga In Theory and Practice" Hirohiko Araki (JoJo mangaka) talked about how it's important to have both realism and signification in your art (signification meaning that your art is recognizable at a glance) and he mentioned Toriyama as a great example of it. To quote the book right in my hands: "Realism and signification oppose each other like oil and water, but it is possible to utilize both at the same time. This is perhaps best typified by Akira Toriyama's artwork. His style is instantly recoginizable, yet his robots and gadgets are drawn in intricate detail down to the smallest parts, and with skillfull technique. His characters' punches and other fighting moves have a visceral sense of speed, but other elements of his drawings are symbolized to the point of being simplistic, often leaving plenty of white space. If you want to understand how incredible Toriyama is, you need look no further than his portrait art. Portraits are typically either rendered realistically or as a caricature. Realistic drawings lose the artist's distinctive qualities, but when the artist's style is retained, the portrait no longer resembles the subject. Toriyama's portraits, on the other hand, resemble their subjects while still remaining patently his-- they are a fusion of oil and water. His mastery of his craft is by all rights incredible. Not every mangaka, or artist, is capable of such a feat."

the thing about 'Show Dont Tell' being used in the last bit of the video-- its not the characters TELLING you that its Gohan's first time in the Chamber...by SHOWING Gohan's confused face, Goku can say something like "oh right, its your first time, lemme show you where the fridge is"...its not TELLING the viewer "...and with this Time Chamber, they got Stronger", its SHOWING the viewer how Goku is learning/teaching about 'Mass vs Speed'...and Goku gaining that battle-knowledge is what makes him "stronger"...then the viewer is SHOWN a few moments of Gohan on the verge of SuperSaiyan, even though Goku TELLS him "youre Almost There!"-- while it Does 'tell' the viewer, that line is more about 'showing' support for his son...because in that moment, the manga/anime doesnt TELL you "Goku spent some real quality time with Gohan" (until he Instant's away with the Cell-Bomb, at least) because its too busy SHOWING you the quality time spent between the two...
