My favourite 90s artist. I love how he got the philosophy of fighting game character design and put it into comics. Like you said, each body type reflects the personality of the character, and the poses and hands are so on point for storytelling.

JOE MAD IS MY FAVERIOTE ARTIST

Another great video! I think to truly understand where Joe Mad was coming from with his art you have to look at the Capcom fighting art for Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. Big traps, forearms, hands. Smaller chests and biceps and you had to be able to get a character's personality across in one image. One of the key designers was a guy called Bengus and if you look at his art you can see how it influenced Joe, to the point Joe designed characters for a game called Gekido where one of them looks a lot like Cammy. Bengus took inspiration from Jim Lee vintage of American artists and added those influences to manga/anime styles and drew the Marvel vs Capcom character designs. Joe Mad took that and started to do his own thing. It's no coincidence that Red Monika's henchmen in Battle Chasers are called Bengus and Akiman (another Capcom character designer.)

Thank you for the amazing information about Joe's background! It makes total sense now I think about it, his work really does remind me of Street Fighter now you mention it. I will take a little deep dive into Bengus and Akiman, I love finding new artists so thank you for the recommendation :)

God I used to *adore* Joe's work. I just picked up the Battle Chasers TPB and it's just as good looking as I rememberd it. His stuff reminds me of a more-rendered Fred Perry (which if you've never looked into his stuff, he's very energetic). And yes, I love JoeMad's hands, they're so expressive. I try to push a little of that in my comic, especially when Nails is using her claws, vs more calm, relaxed scenes (and I have about 300 reference photos I took of my own hands over the last few years that I refer too *very* often) but his are much more over-the-top. I wish he'd stayed in comics longer, but I understand why he left to do video game art. At least we have what he DID do in comics to look at.
@LearnComicsWithPancake5 ай бұрын
Thank you for the mini deep dive into Fred Perry - I can see what you mean! I too wish he stayed in comics, I think he got a rough turn of it with inkers and colourists that don't fit well with his style (personally speaking), so I can see why he went into games.

The fact that you had the pencils for those was amazing. I would love to see more of this type of content especially with the pencils compared to the inking compared to the drawing and the coloring... Honestly it was so cool to see those pencilings I was shocked how good they were

You're in luck as the next video- Joe Mad's faces should be out next week, followed by his special effects (which I can't wait for!!). You're totally right regarding his pencils - they are *incredibly* tight which I think is very admirable! 😁
@mojomann675 ай бұрын
Joe’s later work, like Inhumans, they did not ink his pencils. Instead they would use levels in Photoshop and essentially burn his pencils black. Joe would pencil cleaner than he would normally need if someone was going to ink over his work.

I do fucking love his character design. specially in men. All of them can be mix perfectly both being manly, imposing, secure, caring but also doubtful on their choices and such. Something that is missing these years in many medias. Sadly his works only come to my country in english too, but is something worth because I gotta learn from what I consider one of the best. He may be one of the biggest pillars in my path to artist.

A great write up on Joe's work! And I agree, the personal touches are missing in modern comics nowadays where everything feels a bit bland and samey. I wish you luck with your path and I'm glad Joe is a pillar - he's quickly become one of mine too!

Another great video! 🎉 I love that you brought up his planar drawing style. More square = more strength. More curve = more movement. He likes to exaggerate these elements within a character but also between characters AND (as you pointed out), between supers and normies. How about an in-depth breakdown of constructing both male and female figures in Mad’s style like you did with Jim Lee?

Yes sir joe mad was influenced by anime eastern art style he fused both American/ Japanese style. And I've seen him in person. His art work is very small to. Not like your traditional 11x14 at boards. All his drawings are 5x7, 6x4 very small. And the amount of details he gets into a small area is crazy. We both graduated from the same art school. Art & design. Fell in love with his x-men run the battle chasers. Now he's a game concept designer.

Hi, Pancake. Thanks for another spectacular video. I look forward to delving into it soon. I do have a small request though. Can you (say, when breaking down John Byrne's work someday) give us a tutorial or breakdown on how to draw big wavy hair? I mean, like John Byrne's She-Hulk. I always found that kind of hair amazing and I wanna draw it, but i just lack the skill or understanding to do that lol Anyways, great upload as usual. :) Take care!
