I've been up since 400am to watch your videos ...I quite enjoy learning all the tips and techniques your showing us... this is helping me more forward in tone and shading values which I struggle with....I see how important it is to use different pencils to achieve the tonal values but I'm building up my supplies slowly as I need time to save for supplies....since I have hand issues I cant use a knife for the scraping of k noor graphite pencil have you ever tried using sandpaper to scrape off the graphite on to paper to use? I know they have powder graphite but I'd prefer to buy a pencil like you use as I had a glitter accident🤦♀️ with my daughter yrs back that went every where and weeks till we all stop having glitter attached to us somewhere....lol thanks for any reply..many art blessing to you today....mikelle art mom✍👩🎨

You have great videos and tutorials. I love the work you produce. These are helping me out quite a bit. I just recently picked up charcoal/graphite sketching after not drawing for 30 years. Awesome! Thanks for that. I was waiting for mist! And yes, it's good to use your creative license. It allows for your own vision to shine through your work and for beginners like myself, it helps to discover and develop your own unique style. There are people who can draw photo-realistically and although I think they're amazingly talented, I don't see the point in that either. I tend to admire artists whose unique style makes their work recognisable ;)
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Hi Iona, thanks for the great comment, I totally agree with what you said, I couldn't of said it better, I really admire photo realists too, its so incredible what they do, but I like to play around with the scene, adjust things, leave out the clutter, and enhance the areas I like to make them a better focal point etc.....I love artistic licence:)

At last I feel my drawing skills have improved sufficiently to do this one, I mean drawing the outline as a start. Thinking of the thirds rule I think I can manage the spacing so that it looks right in proportion lol this is for the near future perhaps when I've finished the haywain I can test out the new paper lol
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Once you've finished the Hay wain this one will seem like a piece of cake lol
@margaretbrownhill11937 жыл бұрын
smoothie77 lol I have loved the haywain , it has been great to be so challenged, the issue of escaping graphite hasn't diminished my joy at doing it. Thomas came in today and I actually asked him if there could be some sort of electro magnetic field which was taking the graphite from my paper, he said no mum it's more likely that it's the paper you are using that's doing it. This has had it's funny moments I hope I haven't stressed you out in the process

Another wonderful drawing! I noticed in this drawing you are using a board to draw on; at other times I see you leave your paper in a sketchbook; are you working with different surfaces under your drawings? Is this intentional, or is it simply that the paper was sent to you unbound? Thanks again for sharing your amazing talent
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Christopher, yes, I'm working with different types of paper, if I use a loose sheet I fix it to a board, if the sheet is in a sketchbook I generally leave it in there, in fact the board that I use in this demo was the cardboard backing from an empty A4 sketchbook.

Hi Smoothie, lovely as always. I've never tried the Stedlier brand. I usually use Derwent. I made a purchase after Christmas, Creatacolr went on sale at a great price so I bought a set. I don't really like them. So... how does the Stedlier compare to the Derwent?
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica, the Staedtler lumograph black are mixed with carbon, so they are very dark and I couldn't compare then to the Derwents as they aren't regular graphite, although the regular Staedtler lumograph are all graphite and compare well to the Derwents, they are very similar, Staedtler make really good tried and trusted pencils, I even find the cheaper Steadtler Noris and Tradition to be excellent too, but the lumograph range are the professional pencils, definitely worth investing in a set.

Hi Smoothie77 ... have followed your vids for sometime... and decided to subscribe... to get ask a question... if you are mounting your graphite drawing in a glass frame... do you recommend mat board layers (at least two levels) and would you spray clear acrylic (non-shine type) on your drawing to prevent smudging ?? You may have mentioned this some else but I did not search for it. Thanks. Sam
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles, thanks for subscribing, I would always recommend using a mat when framing a graphite drawing, its best if the glass doesn't press on the drawing, Its not really necessary to spray the drawing if its protected in a frame.

I STILL get nervous watching these videos, after starting drawing some 50 year a go!?? “How does he/she do that !? “ and I’ve just learned The answer: it’s NOT how they do it that matters, it’s HOW you do it! No 2 artists are the same, see the same ,work the same way etc. the best Way 2 learn is just do it DON’T think about it. Just take the idea not how he/she does it because all you do is Frighten the hell out of yourself.
