This is truly amazing! I have been trying to learn to draw for about 2 and 1/2 years now... And it has been a struggle. A big problem of mine is not drawing things in the correct size and to see how you did this grid method...I do believe it is going to be very helpful to me I think. I don't know why I've never seen or thought of the idea before!

This drawing is just GREAT. YOU ARE GREAT Smoothie. I really mean it. All those subtle shading on mountains, rocks and trees. Perfect. I am happy to have a chance to learn from you just because you want to share. And...you are honest to say that it took you 15 hours to complete the picture. So many claim they do it in 1 hour ...what is the point? You are my GURU and if you decide to write a book on pencil drawing, I promise to be the first to stand in a line to buy it. Thanks for this video :)

Hey, Smoothie I watched all your graphite drawing videos a few times and I have to say that you are the best graphite landscape artist that I came across. My drawings improved a lot since. You definitely should do an E-Book and it would be awesome to be able to buy full-length step by step video tutorials. I'd definitely pay for that. Sell them on Vimeo or Crafty or.... I'd be your first customer. Keep them coming and thanks for taking the time to teach us.

Your teaching method is second to none and I for one would absolutely pay money for your course mate. Another wonderful tutorial my friend and I can't tell you how much I have learned from you over the past year or so. Excellent. I've sat at that bridge many a times with my wife and children eating sandwiches, it's just outside Keswick in the beautiful Lake District, happy memories. Also I absolutely love that Derwent paper and I think their watercolour paper is really nice also, mainly for pencil work and watercolour pencils. Sorry mate, everything I post this comment I've come back and added a wee bit more lol.

Thanks for the nice comment and take care my friend:)

Beautiful drawing! I love the grid method as well, I used it for a couple of colored pencil landscape drawings and for animal drawings with curly fur (I was really proud, I thought it was my idea to use it for detailed drawings and not just a sketching method haha). The drawings are getting much more detailed, thats why it takes to long. I should try to use a white pencil with my graphie pencils. Never really thought about that... Thanks for sharing!
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I will be using the grid method a lot more in the future, it encourages me to draw more complicated pictures that I normally would avoid, its a great method! The white looking pencil I'm using is a Koh-I-Noor pencil eraser, not colored pencil, I never tried white pencil with graphite, I would imagine it would mix with the graphite and not look good? but might be worth trying:)
@BuntstiftKunst7 жыл бұрын
Ah, I was a bit wondering why the white shows up so well ;) I use the same technique than! But yes, ones an artist told me to use white in combination with graphite to blend the graphite with white to create shadows for colored pencil drawings. Don´t know if that looks good in 100% graphite drawings...
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Maybe a little bit of graphite would work nicely with colored pencils, but I think white pencil on a graphite drawing would only be worth doing on toned paper maybe?
@oberesmilieu41358 жыл бұрын

I have used the grid method in the past but do have concerns with using it. I know you aren't suggesting using it all the time but feel you can become over depended on it, preventing you devoping better eye/hand coordination, it takes your eye off the whole scene and not so much with a landscape but say drawing animals or figures losing the dynamics of the drawing, finally having to rub all the lines out. Don't get me wrong I love your tutorials and watch them repeatedly learning so much and look forward to future ones, but feel my drawing has improved more by not using this method, I even bought some grids printed onto perspex which you could lay over photos. I know even the old masters used this method, perhaps I could still use it on odd occasions like you have here.

Smoothie! Hi mate... Thanks for the tip on the Koh-i-noor pencil eraser... Just got mine today and it is soo much better at erasing than the Faber Castell ones... How do you sharpen yours please? I put my Faber Castells in a pencil sharpener and it just came out awful... and the knife just seems to carve it way too much. Love your graphite vids :)
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
I've sharpened mine in multiple pencil sharpeners, never had a problem, the only thing that does happen sometimes (depending on which sharpen i use) is the rubber tip sharpens to a point that's too long and loses its stiffness, I just trim a small piece of the tip and its good to go.
@theearthhasmusic47668 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Maybe I have to find the technique! Just out of interest - Do you ever use the M+R or other desk top crank sharpeners to sharpen the eraser pencils? Sorry for the many questions :)
