Please remember, care has to be taken with glass powders, always wear a mask when there is the possibility of creating dust. Some people also wear gloves when painting, however I prefer to feel the brush without gloves then wash my hands after painting. Use a damp cloth to wipe down surfaces or use a small damp cotton bud to clean delicate areas around your paintwork. I save unused paint in a separate pot if I’ve added gum Arabic, but if I’ve just used water as a mixer then I wait till it’s dry and scrape back into the original container. Change your work clothes before going home to your living quarters, as dust can be carried in your clothes. Wash hands before eating or preparing food, and don’t eat or drink in the work area you paint at. Generally glass brushes are washed in running water and allowed to dry naturally, however if you use oil as a mixing medium with your paint you will have to clean the brushes with a shampoo or some other gentle washing up liquid to remove the oil. 🙂

Hi Jacqueline, I haven’t used the lead free paints, but have heard they are not quite as strong a pigment as the original lead based paints. Best thing I can suggest is to experiment with a small amount of each paint to see which is best for you. 🙂

Thank you so much for the video, this is so useful for me! I only have one question. Do you fire the glass between any next layer of pigment when making shades? And if so, in which temperature?
@DerekHuntArtist Жыл бұрын
Yes I usually fire each layer separately, starting with the trace lines. However, I also sometimes fire multiple layers together, usually starting with the light shading layer, then adding trace lines. Paints are fired around 655 degrees centigrade, yellow stains around 620 degrees centigrade, depending on the manufacturer of the paints. Hope that helps 🙏🙂

Derek, I'm re-visiting some of your previous videos. One thing I didn't see here, perhaps it's in another location, is cleaning up your piece after scribing it with various tools. There is a of dust. How does one clean that off without marring the surface of the painted areas? And in some cases, there is excess dust. Is this save to dispose of in the bin or does it it specific handling? Lastly, brush clean up, is that safe to simply clean up with tap water and wash down the drain or are there any specific precautions? If there is another video addressing this topic, can you please provide a link? Thank you so much! I enjoy your videos a great deal and am taking detailed notes on each topic.

@DerekHuntArtist11 ай бұрын
Hello, yes I use different mixtures with paint to get effects like that. The easiest way is to use pure rubbing alcohol, or methalated spirits which disperses the water in the paint, and it evaporates before you put the glass into the kiln. Hope that helps 😀
