A true artist. Look at his hand carved pencil. Using the classical method of working from the outside in. NOT starting with an eye. Notice how he does not attempt to add any features or details, until he is sure of the outside shape, also notice the first of the features are Eyebrows (not eyes) so many artist miss a likeness due to this error. Another good basic point is how he holds his drawing board, so he has good eye level of his subject. Wonderful classical live demonstration. Thank you.

In Chinese art school great emphasis is laid on learning the classical techniques. Students are first expected to copy casts and then do live drawings. Lot of these techniques were learned by the old Chinese art teachers from Russian classical masters when going to western Europe or the US for art studies was not such a feasible option.

I don't have my pad at his angle, although use every other technique. It's not traditional but i sit in my bed when I draw and my pad is in my lap. I guess its at some kind of angle but not his. I WILL start eyebrow first now when I do eyes. Granted I still get the likeness of my subjects, but it seems like less of a pain to do eyebrow first now that I think of it. Its another way of doing outside to inside but while working the inside shapes. Eyebrows, then eyes, nose then mouth. Obviously first you MUST find the thirds of your subjects face before you do ANYTHING, then make outline adjustments to the basic shape of head/hair.neck and shoulders. Then draw the likeness of the subject, then work values. Usually after I finish the face I then start the hair. Also what I do with valuing is I purposely go a shade or 2 lighter for each level of shading I need to do. Cast shadows everything is a shade lighter. This way if I need to make them darker I can with no problem. If I eyeball and try to match the darkness I or anyone else will run the risk of over valuing and have to put an eraser to it to lighten, OR make the portrait darker than the subject Sometimes that's ok but I personally as an experienced artist do not recommend because it could ruin the likeness of your subject.
