This video is part one of a figure drawing demonstration done for Brian Knox's course: Figure Drawing.
This is an excerpt of the first demo of this five-week course which shows how to draw the female figure. In this stage of the drawing, Brian establishes the overall placement and proportions of the figure. This stage will allow you to set up your drawing and ensure you are filling the whole page, but not running off the sides. Watch part 2 to see the completed lay in stage and to see Brian add in the gesture of the arms, legs, and torso.

I really like this video. I wanted to know what kind of pencil you use for the drawing. That’s good that you don’t have to transfer the drawing. I was trained this way. Thank you I also needed to practice the female proportions!

Thanks, Rocio!! Glad you're enjoying the videos! I primarily use the Wolff's Carbon 6B charcoal pencil. I made a whole video about materials a while back where I go over all the best pencil options for this style of charcoal drawing as well as paper and erasers too!

hey brian i have a question, about your figure drawing class on watts atelier. Do i have to take your quick sketch course first on can i jump into this and learn riley method from the figure drawing course?

Hi Sevyn, I actually don't teach at Watt's anymore. The classes offered on their online school are recordings from a few years ago. I have updated and improved on a lot of things I taught when I recorded those classes at Watts. My current website is foundationartschool.com. Soon we will have a subscription program where you can access all of my new classes. That said, I would recommend taking the figure drawing course first and then quicksketch. That way you can learn all the basics in depth and then apply them in the quicksketch class. Quicksketch is more like rapid-fire practice of those concepts although both of them are fundamental level classes.
