Bit late to this video, but I got myself a small set for Christmas and am enjoying them as a warm-up tool. I am slowly filling a sketchbook with very simple colour play, seeing what these stubby little guys can do and what combinations I can come up with. Really enjoying them so far.

Thanks for this. I got these recently and so far haven’t had too much success. Interesting that you use a micron pen for fine detail. I was scared to do this because I thought it would clog the pen. Thanks for the reassurance!

Yes this was a few years ago, I’d use a uni Posca paint pen now or Pitt Pen as the Microns are just too fine and can’t stand up to the rigors of mixed media work indeed!

I got them about a month ago at $31 for 18. So even after the pandemic with incredible inflation you can get them at a better price. I like the thickness of the wood and pigment as I can get very heavy handed and they don’t break.

Did the gesso mix (what proportions?) make the Woodys permanent? I have Woodys, feel they were a mistake buy as I've hardly used them. Was wondering if they work better on hot pressed paper with a smooth surface? Thank you for the video

I would recommend just playing with them. Start with swatching if you are unsure what to do with them. Add water in some place, gesso in other (just dip brush in gesso or if it’s thick add a little water to make it milkier and straight on page over crayon). You can doodle over the swatches. Play and enjoy without expectations. 🖌🎨🌈

Hi there! I was talking about the regular size Stabilo pencils. Here's another video on what they are and why they're my favorite! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIObqHqnqdmBrtE You can purchase regular Stabilos individual but they are WAY expensive (like $6 each) if you do (rather than $14 for a dozen) so I wouldn't go that route! You can't buy these little chubby ones separately, as least I don't think so. You can always just check Amazon to see what they sell! Neo's are watersoluble crayons (while Stabilo are watersoluble pencils) and yes, there are LOTS of watersoluble pencils in many brands! Stabilo regular pencils only come in about 8 (?) colors so when I need more colors I use other brands. I don't use Gesso with water but rather I use Gesso AS water, to make these react! No you don't need them. They are like FAT Inktense, lol! The only difference is that Inktense are permanent after they get wet and these still move quite a bit! But other than that they are similar. I just love the black of the Stabilo - nothing compares to that black in any brand!!!

Twisted Artdesigns yes! I use mine constantly. They last forever, have a huge variety of colors and dissolve really well in water. You can get very thick layers of color with them too.

Every girl needs to accessorize!!! I have to tell you my stabilo story. My first go with them I could hear your voice in my head when you did the flat chested mermaid you said to make one swipe to the face with the midge pog. Neos are less expensive and break down easier. I looked at these, but I think I am going to buy Neos. I use Prima ws pastels right now and love them, they are a great BIG bang for the buck! Thanks for the review/demo!

I was really wondering about how to avoid those "scribble" lines when using these with water, but that gesso trick was sweet. I dub thee (drum roll...) Art Diva Supreme. And nice work with the splatter. I would have just cussed, cried and thrown things, and then later undertook a massive cut and paste operation onto another sheet, so that was a truly genius save. OK! I really loved how you saved her! I really wished I had the full set of Neos I keep saying one day....lol I do have some Dina Wakely Scribble sticks and omg, I love them. I believe this spring she has another 18 colors coming out. That I'm looking forward to getting. I have Jane Davenports Aquapastels. I really love them but the colors are limited currently. I look at the Stabilo Markers every time I go into Hobby Lobby. I think I may grab them with their 40% off coupon before the end of the winter. I love your mermaid. Welcome Kat! If you already have those other watersoluble magic wands then you definitely don't need to add these to your stash which sounds plenty, well, plentiful already!! EXCEPT for the magical black one!!!! There's just nothing quite like it!!

what pencil and paint brush were you using please

Just a Pentel .03 2B mechanical pencil. And when I add gesso to anything I make sure to use my stiffest acrylic paint brush as gesso will destroy a regular brush. These are plain air brushes that I broke the ends off so that they are regular length. I got them about 10 years ago and am not sure of the brand. Just remember Gesso = stiff bristles!!!!

Have you tried prismacolor pencils? You like stabilo over those?

Oh yes! Of course, I love prismacolor pencils! Stabilo's are a whole-nother-animal because they are water-soluble (while Prisma's are not).

@@KarenCampbellArtist yeah. Cool. Yeah I love prismacolor . That pigment is on point! Have you used carandache crayons? Those are high in pigment and water soluble too. Love em. Another brand of water soluble crayons, that is surprisingly very good, is Crayola. They have these twist open ones that are pretty great.

They are super fun BUT just fat watersoluble pencils so if you already have them they you're probably ok to go without. I just love all things Stabilo I think! Although there is not substitute for that magical black one!!!

Anything special about them? Why not just stick with inktense or neocolor iis?

Nope, nothing special. You could absolutely stick with the others. EXCEPT when it comes to the black. Nothing else comes close!
