Also a thing to keep in mind. Dress how the client dresses in their organization. If the client doesn't wear suits don't come overdressed in a suit.
@FirmLearning
@FirmLearning 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, yes in principle agree! In most organizations, it will be OK to dress up slightly more as a consultant compared to a regular employee though, you will usually adjust to the dresscode of the C-level / senior management (which in most organizations means a suit without tie nowadays). Best! Heinrich

Very nice video. Bonus tip: long socks. Never wear short socks, as they could revel bare skin, especially when you are assuming certain positions sitting. The color: the "ton sur ton" solution is the most classic and involves the choice of a sock that recalls the chromatic tones of the trousers or shoes. Brown socks with brown shoes or pants; black socks on black shoes or pants, and so on. The color tone should be a little bit lighter or darker so that it is noticeable, but with a pleasant chromatic transition. Last but not least: never, in any situation, wear white socks. They are bad.

Great Video, as always! However, there are some small points that I want to adress: 1. Black suits: You correctly pointed out that you should never wear a black suit to a business occasion, but I would go one step further and say that you can only ever wear a black suit to a funeral. For formal occasions, either a tuxedo will be required, which you can rent if you do nor own one, or you will be better off with a dark navy suit than with a black suit. Black suits give the impression that you know nothing about correct clothing IMHO. 2. Button-down shirts: Some more conservative people(at least in Europe) would consider button down shirts inappropriate for any business occasion. 3. Shoes: Your points were all correct, but some additional details: The Oxford shoe is characterized by the eyelets (the parts where the shoelaces ho through)being sown to the main part of the shoe on the bottom, i.e. you cannot reach under the lacing from the bottom with your fingers. This is a small detail but people will notice. Also an Oxford shoe can be a Brogue at the same time, but as you said correctly, brogues are less formal. Many people also tend to underestimate the importance of good quality shoes: You sometimes walk a lot during a business day and want your feet to be in a great condition. So these are just my small remarks - Heinrich, thank you for your amazing video, I am looking forward to the next one!

Great video Heinrich! I would add that the FIT of a suit or shirt is maybe the most important thing. I often see people wearing expensive brands, but one or two sizes too large which makes them look odd. You could better buy a few 50€ shirts that perfectly follow the contours of your body than a 300€ shirt with way too much loose fabric ;)

I think brown shoes on navy suit looks amazing. Wearing black on navy is too similar a color but yet not the same, and to many people, myself included, looks off. I do, however, like wearing brown shoes with black pants. It's a more informal attire, but you will look like a bad boy.

Thanks a lot for the video Heinrich really interesting. A couple of small points. In case you wear any metals they should match ( watch, buckle of the belt and cufflinks ). Additionally ( it depends of the suit ) you may want to wear suspenders instead of belts. Last really marginal point is the colour of the waistcoat of your morning coat ( blue if I recall correctly from the video). In theory it should be light grey, cream or such colours. 😊

From a British standpoint: Anything that draws attention away from your face is a no go. The objective of a suit is to blend in so much that it cannot be remembered for anything except fitting well. Your face and personality should be your memorable traits. From what I've gathered, Italians think differently though.

I found it funny that you say you don't own a Stresemann - You had just shown your cutaway, though. The Stresemann is called Stresemann because Gustav Stresemann was annoyed by the time he spent changing from parliamentary cutaway to day suit all the time, so he just changed jackets from cutaway to day jacket and kept the rest. So by taking your cutaway outfit shown and instead of the jacket wear a regular black jacket, you in fact do own a Stresemann ;) Other than that I really don't get why business dresscodes call for the most boring and dull outfits possible, thus making people hate having to wear this. I for my part absolutely love formal dress, I love ties and I basically wear some sort of tie all the time, very much inspired by the roaring twenties, thus playful and colourful - and I get complimented all the time for it by people in grey suits. (I'm also a consultant, by the way. The client is always confused when they tell me "We don't have a dresscode, you can wear whatever you want" and I reply "I do." :D)

I would say, it depends on the watch. I would agree to Heinrich's advice to avoid very recognizable expensive watches (like the Rolex Submariner, Datejust, Patek Philipe Nautilus, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak) One glance and most fashion-savy people will directly know what you're wearing. Watch fans might like it and it could be an opener for a great conversation, other people might see it more critically though. This is a risk that you might not want to take. My tip: If you want to have an expensive watch to wear at work, choose one that is not quite as recognizable (e.g. Rolex Explorer, Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, also most dress watches like a Lange und Söhne work fine) A real watch enthusiast will recognize it and start a conversation, but most other people won't. So you have the advantages of a nice watch from a famous brand without the risk of people judging you for it.

@@FirmLearning now Iam on vp Level and Iam wearing my navitimer. But when I was younger I did not wear a watch, bc it did not fit with the position and salary in my opinion.

Hi Maulana, not sure I 100% understand the comment. Of course everyone can decide for him / herself how to dress and express identity, though as with many other things in life, some behaviors are just more socially accepted than others. Best, Heinrich

An Oxford shoe could have brogues as well. Oxford only describes the type of shoe - not the ornament (brogueing). Kings Men got that extremely wrong. ANd I would argue, that you are always better dressed with brown shoes. Black shoes are just boring - even in consulting.

Hi Heinrich, I usually agree with nearly a 100% of your content, however I think this video is quite misleading. While there is a lot of correct information of high value, I would like to point out that the business world has changed a lot in the last 10 years. These changes are driven by younger decision makers and are even amplified through the corona crisis. You gave "the gentleman's guide" but lets give some differentiation here: - if you are doing projects in the media industry you might wear sneakers on the project - by now we see bolder choices both in consulting (from the analyst to the partner) and on the client side - shirts with coloured buttons, no jacket, no tie, etc etc I think your guide is very informative but to anybody who is watching this, I just want to point out that if your client is not in financial services there is a good chance that all of these rules are just not as important anymore as they used to be. Dont stress!

Hi Lars! Some more business casual style outfits might definitely be OK if the whole client organization (including C-Level / Senior Mgmt which you will usually take as reference) is not wearing a suit to the office. Trust outside of Tech and certain other other companies, most senior leaders will still wear suits though (this is definitely true for majority of German DAX 40 environment). However there will for sure also be regional differences, e.g. if you work in the Bay area, outfits will surely be much more casual. Would still claim that if you wear an outfit as described, no-one will consider you wrongly dressed. You can always take off your suit jacket for a more casual look. After the first week, you can always reassess with the team whether a more casual look is fine. Best! H
